Wilson played the ball because there were two players behind him who were clearly offside. Surely that makes them active?

not in my opinion when the ball was played, it was a well taken goal, Bego had no chance.

The pass was intended for either Van Persie or Welbeck, who were both offside.
Doesn't quite make up for Wilson's error though. He could have just left it to bounce out for a goal kick..

In reality, we were penalised for trying to stop a through ball to an offside player. That's a daft rule if it exists.

By the barmy laws of the offside rule it was a legitimate goal. Wilsons error i'm afraid.
I also learned something new - you can knee it back to the keeper and if the keeper picks it up it's not deemed a foul.

Should never have stood, Wilson only cleared the ball in haste because he had Welbeck behind him who was standing in an easy to spot offside position. And they're moaning saying we get all the luck! Who cares though? We are Stoke!

Too much grey area and interpretation now. They got it right today though, by the laws of the game.

When the ball was first played both wellbeck and. Van Persia were offside. Wilson cut the ball out back to their player and then when he was played in he was now back onside. Ironically if Wilson had left it, it would have been offside. Stupid rule stupid goal from but.... What a result for us. Still chuffed. I know it's only one game but these days I feel I'm being entertained and today was brilliant.

No it was onside as the rules state in any incidents of uncertainty Man Utd get the decision

Soon as the ball went forward the linesman should of flagged but this does not apply to man utd who have there own rules. Many decisions for stoke the ref and linesmen took there time to see if they could possibly give it utds way instead. It's about time refs were sacked for cheating for the big clubs. Happening week in week out.

Ball headed in that direction of the player who was miles offside which in turn forced Wilson to act. So why the flag wasn't raised from the moment the ball headed in that direction is anyone's guess. Then again I thought the linesman on that side was poor all match.

I'm still amazed at the number of fans who only seem to have the haziest idea about the offside rule. Welbeck made no attempt to play the ball or interfere (oo-er!) with a defender attempting to play the ball, therefore he was not active. He played no part in the goal. To those who say his presence forced Wilson to play the ball, that's not so. If Wilson had left it, Welbeck would not have been able to play it. It was a just a poor clearance by the defender. If we'd scored that goal I doubt if there would be one person on here trying to claim it was offside.
Also, re the backpass - it was played off his thigh therefore the keeper can pick it up, as the ref clearly indicated to the Stoke players who queried it.

Having watched MOTD's 'highlights' - I agree, he was onside x

Don't know about the goal - and I'm sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but second half, Whelan just blocks off Young right on the touchline. How the ref ans especially the lino missed that, I'll never know.

How on earth is Wilson supposed to know that Welbeck is offside when Welback is almost directly behind him and Wilson has the ball coming towards him that he has to focus his attention on??? Wilson has no option but to play the ball precisely because Welbeck is behind him. To say that Welbeck isn't interfering with, or influencing, play is totally wrong.
