Have I imagined it or was Whelan an attack minded midfielder with a cracking long range shot when we first got him? Yes. What happened is the result when you keep him in a cage for 6 years!!

What fantastic management, taking the piss out of one of your starting 11. +1 Way to get your team to play for you. Hughes should look at himself before having a pop.

I haven't seen the incident and I accept it's probably nothing to get excited about. Leaving aside Whelan's attributes as a player, he is one of the leaders of the squad and, like it or not, we're going to have to rely on him and his mates (we all know who they are) to get us over the line this season. If our manager has done the kind of gesticulating and finger pointing that so riles us when done by N'Zonzi or Arnie, it's not a good sign. We need to be pulling in the same direction and it has to come from the top.

It's not like he is throwing bottles of water around is it?

I like Whelan, thought he had another decent game tonight, but the incident was quite funny. Who to play on Saturday? I wouldn't entertain Palacios for Saturday and would go with Cameron in midfield against Manure. His energy in midfield could help us pick up some vital points...hopefully 3 vital points. He did not look decent with his pathetic attempt to block the shot that Bego spilled for the goal. He certainly didn't when he played that horrendous back-heel on the edge of our box that nearly cost us another (Seriously? When has Whelan ever had tricks like that in his locker????). Zonzi's red means he is guaranteed another start unfortunately. My support for MH gets chipped away with every game that he plays clearly wank players. At least the penny has dropped with Walters...

On the stream that I was watching, a clear as day and very audible incident had me half chuckling and half shaking my head. Around the 70th minute mark, Whelan lost the ball near to the dugouts. He claimed for a foul and whinged to Hughes about not getting one. Hughes stared him straight in the face, pointed to the Sunderland goal and said "try going that way for a change" before turning to Bowen or Eddie, shaking his head and gesticulating a kind of "fuck off" gesture with his arm. The same stream was also continually going on about Cattermole in the early stages of the game, insinuating that he had refused to play in tonights game in an attempt to force through a move to us. Take the piss out of one of your players who is struggling to play in a formation that you wont change. Nice one.. Where did he find that little beauty? In the Paulo Di-Canio bible of football management?

As has just been said - the original post did make it sound a bit like the passionate Di Canio.

With 10 men we made sure we didn't waste the ball and actually passed it forward. We need to play like that with 11 men.
