The state of the game is all the media's fault. Completely condone cheats like suarez, sterling etc. Falling over like a drunk in a lead helmet. People say the tv coverage and embarrassment created because of it will stop it. It may do if commentators start growing some balls and slating these blatant cheats straight up. None of this 'there was contact' bollocks. More of 'this man is a cheating scumbag and everybody needs to know it.' It's not only bad sportsmanship but it's looking like a pissing idiot. It's embarrassing for the football world. I try and promote the game to my rugby fan mates and you get idiots like that pre-pubescent little rat who plays for man utd flying through the air and rolling around like he's been bazuka'd from the main stand. It puts the game as a whole in a bad light and it's why you get all these annoying yanks going "soccer's a pussys sport for wimps. Wooo. Go america. Football woooo. Soccer is shit!" And you know what... They could be right

The point really is the fact that Sterling plays for Liverpool. If it was Walters who handballed it into the box and then dived at the slightest contact with, say, the lumbering Skertl, the whole debate would have a different slant in the media. Something along the lines of dirty, ruthless and uncompromising Stoke, still up to their old tricks, using deceit and chutzpah to get past the superior skills of Liverpool. Oh, and Ryan Shawcross broke an Arsenal player's leg once, in a horrific tackle. Just in case you didn't know.

Neville is just there to provide an opinion, it might not actually be his own. Remember how he praised Wilkinson for his behaviour following Gardner's very late challenge? Surely in this 'win at all costs' game that he's talking about concerning yesterday, Wilkinson should have tried to "win his team the game" by rolling around screaming and holding on to as many body parts as possible?
Try not to take any notice. The game is on it's arse and is in no hurry to get up.

Didn't we get a soft penalty against Liverpool two seasons ago when SJW went down under Carragher's challenge?

Quite possibly Dave, but I doubt very much whether high profile media players were lining up to espouse the virtues of SJW whereas they'll acquiesce to the players of big clubs all night long.

We wouldn't even been discussing a missed hand ball, dubious penalty if Wilson had played a simple 10 yard pass to N'Zonzi

Surely in this shit modern game defenders need to be wise to it. There would be more bookings for diving If that is the strikers plan you have to counter it By counter it would you err towards "Kick him in the bollox as he's going to dive anyway" and the skill part being paying the ref not to see it. Maybe it's why were seeing all these funny coloured boots , is it an attempt to match the opposition teams shorts? My technique would be to grab his collar and run him in to the advertising hoardings.

Typical apologist. What he meant to say was "He runs like a girl so its not his fault his hand hit the ball. He goes down quicker than the cheapest whore, so its not his fault he collapsed in the penalty area.........................and he would never, ever, hit a girl"

its a shame that coming from Neville - he always seemed to have a sense of moral indignation that gave him some clarity. the same thing that lead him to admit in print he should have been sent off for his tackles vs ethers and a west brom player that lead him to quit, the same sense of indignation which was the one good thing to come from the shitpit which was rios world cup windups. If nothing else, as a defender he should be disgusted. Its no exaggeration to say that similar body checks happen all the time in basketball, a non contact sport. and those centre of gravity deficient giants can stay on their feet, but little raheem cant? Thats meant to be acceptable from a professional athlete??! bullshit

Alan Pardew gets reminded of his responsibility for calling the other manager "...." Thus inciting a scrap. Mark Hughes takes his coat off for £8k

Is this the same Gary Neville that launched his media career by making a big deal about how he lectured Ronaldo on the importance of staying on his feet when he first joined Man United?
That salt-of-the-earth man's man who used to righteously wag his finger at every winger who fell to ground following one of his legendary late tackles?
The same guy, yes?

You guys need to get a grip. Sterling exploited Wilson's foolishness. This is a cut-throat game and people are going to do whatever they can to gain an edge. It might not sit well with people but this is almost certainly a godless universe and there's definitely no such thing as justice.

It might not sit well with people but this is almost certainly a godless universe and there's definitely no such thing as justice. That is the problem for me,in that its become a 'win at any cost' mentality, certainly in the Premier League, with the main reason being not how many medals or trophys footballers can win but how much more money can be added to the already obscene amounts they get paid. I know I will never give up on my Stoke fix but even though I'm 'knocking on a bit' now and I have had some brill times these last few years(Promotion, Wembley,Europe etc...)my enjoyment is slowly being eroded. IMHO Sky,with their barrow loads of cash have a lot to answer for. Oh,and the earlier poster who said that top flight football is corrupt,is bang on. Been saying this for years.

As crap as diving is some of us can get puritanical about it at times. On 24/10/92 I doubt if any of the thousands of celebratory pints were refused as the golden one had gone down voluntarily. Similarly v Wolves in 07/08 Rory was through in the last minute was fouled but did the 'decent thing' and stayed on his feet. Very honourable but I'd have preferred the penalty. Owen dived for England in 1998 and I doubt any of us didn't celebrate the resulting goal.

yes it was a dive...yes it was a handball and i was angry at the time (and still am about both decisions)and don't condonw either fuck up by the ref BUT what is just as important is Wilson's lack of ability at centre half in this specific incident
what is also disappointing is how few people have noticed that Wilson....
1) made a complete and utter balls up of a decision to try to clear the ball diagonally in the direction of an approaching player (madness) and
2) there was no need whatsoever to even go near a player who was running into no man's land towards the byline in the first place..just stand him up he's going nowhere
his attempted clearance was shocking and he had no need to be as close to Sterling in the penalty area first place...basic basic defensive issues there on both counts.
if it had been SJW there'd have been thread after thread about how incompetent he was

Well it was a marginal decision , the thing that pisses me off is the ref allowed skirtel to hold on and pull shirts all through the match , its so common place now it seems to be tolerated by a lot of refs

I was beginning to wonder when the real Gary Neville would come out. It is now! Cheating of any sort, is wrong! We were cheated! I really am getting pig sick of this two faced, let,s all back the big clubs, side of football. It is coming very close to driving me away completely! Agree with MickMills as well, about Wilson. Shocking is the only word to describe the choices that he made.
