After an amazing game the talk should have been about how well we played, while cursing how badly we defended at times. Instead once again we are talking about another referee suffering from big club syndrome, the affliction where you suddenly lose whatever refereeing ability you had and suddenly spend 10 minutes finding even the most spurious reason to change the momentum of the game in favour of the so called establishment. Once more as at Newcastle, the referee ignores a blatant handball and then gives a penalty that even Liverpool didn’t think was a penalty but as Rogers’s said we will take it and move on, that’s sadly where it will end, there’ll be some shrugging of the shoulders but it will be forgotten by Tuesday. If that had been given at the other end, there’d be uproar, the player involved would be slated as a diving cheat and maybe a three match ban would be called for, okay maybe not but I feel like ranting. Rogers called it a Spanish penalty, that is manager speak for diving or conning the referee which is only acceptable it seems if one of the big clubs get the decision. The problem as I have said after the Newcastle game so called less fashionable clubs bleating about decisions is seen as just that, you lost get over it. If it happens to one of the favoured clubs, we need a national enquiry and changes to the laws of the game. I mean not even die hard Scouser’s could say it was a penalty with a straight face that tells you all you need to know. That decision completely altered the game for me, we had come back into it and were the ones with the momentum and Liverpool were on the back foot I am not suggesting we were dominating the game but we had Liverpool in trouble, defensively they looked suspect and I believe we may have gone on and won the game before Taylor decided to create a chance for his joint referee Gerrard. Another point Gerrard, he is fated as one of the best players ever, sorry he is a good footballer but like many in this country nothing out of the ordinary, we’re not talking Zidane or Best here. The one thing he does that is world class is using his position to get his side what he wants, getting Ryan booked for one thing. Was there a mention of it, no of course not, had some nasty foreigner or a Stoke player done the same thing, we would have got a week of this behaviour needs to be stamped out and the player should have been booked. Gerrard, Rooney or Terry does it and we hear nothing or some prick like Parlour would tell you they are doing their job for their team. I am not bitter it was a great game and a combination of Keystone cop defending, unbelievable circumstances and a referee with Star struck syndrome combined to deny us a much deserved reward of something from the game. We are still a work in progress and I hope Hughes and his scouting staff have some quality up their sleeves over the next 18 days, if so I don’t think we have much to worry about. I will be glad to see Huth return though he brings that none shall pass attitude that we sometimes lack at the moment.
Thanks for the entertainment lads, less comic defending from here on in but thanks Mr Taylor for once again proving that it doesn’t matter how well you play a referee can always change the momentum of a game for the big clubs, well done you must be so proud this morning knowing you kept Liverpool in the race for the Champions League and well done Brendan Rogers for calling a dive a Spanish penalty, it’s up there with me calling Liverpool the hubcap museum of the North West, robbery by any other name, okay I will calm down now.

Great post Ted - sums my feelings up pretty much. Unfortunately, such incidents are starting to erode my commitment - not to Stoke as such, I will always be a loyal supporter but football (esp the Prem) as an "industry" in general.....
Furtehrmore I detest these late Sunday matches - an appalling time to go to a match and I'm not goping to another unless the whole season hinges on it of course...

I think it's 'tailor made' and 'should have been on crime watch' ....sorry to be picky. Come on mumf, you're smarter than this. The OP was making a pun on the referees name... dear me. Anyway, I think we should consider the fact Anthony Taylor hasn't been particularly poor in the past, so we were due an arse raping by him. Yesterday was just that. It was quite clear throughout the game that he was going to give the major decisions to Liverpool. I'm not sure why people are anti the term 'Work in progress'. Hughes has been in charge less than a year. We can stop saying it at the start of next season but for now, I think he's doing a cracking job and let's keep the faith.

I don't think we are a work in progress anymore as Hughes has put an impressive stamp on our team in a very short time.
Given he's done this with precious little backing from the board and the loss of two key performers in Huth and latterly, Begovic I think it's all the more credible.
We battered Liverpool for long spells and without even going on about bad luck or a couple of individual errors (that no manager can legislate for) we could and should have got a result yesterday.
Hopefully the board will back him as they have done with the previous manager and the good work can continue and see us have a very decent second half of this season and a very progressive one next term.
The response from the crowd despite losing, told you all you needed to know about how the Stoke faithful are fully behind what is going on with our new manger.

What about the thousands that had fucked off long before the final whistle? One word for you Jamo.....deluded. That's me, mate. We get fucking thousands leaving at 2-2 with ten minutes to go against Chelsea so it's hardly news is it? I take my view from the crowd's response at the final whistle and the general (positive) chat on the walk home while getting piss wet through.

'Work in Progress' How fucking long are we going to be churning out this line? I dunno. Maybe we should allow him a 'three year plan'. What do you reckon? Then after three years, if we still have huge holes in the squad and an unresolved inability to score goals maybe we should let him have another one. Sounds reasonable, surely.

I'm only playing Jamo.
I didn't see that the response at the end as an endorsement of what Hughes has being doing.
I just saw it as response to the obvious efforts that the players had put in.
I've been happy with many of the matches lately but maybe where I'm different to many (including Hughes himself given his very public upbeat comments) is that we are marching forward to some kind of football utopia and that things can only get better.
It simply doesn't work like that and yesterday was a reminder of what happens when you get the balance wrong. They simply weren't the right tactics for yesterday IMHO and we will run the risk of daft losses at home if we continue to play in the wrong areas and have full backs that spend half their time in the wrong half.

We were excellent. I don't even think we defended that badly as a group. Individual errors, dreadful luck, another shit ref and the best player in the country did for us but we would have beaten 15 of the other teams in the league soundly had we played them yesterday. 3 wins in 19 since West Ham is pretty worrying and why we are most definitely in the relegation mix but the signs are good. We are a million miles away from being one of the worst 3 teams in the league and a couple of signings away from being in the top 10.

I don't think you understand the differing tactics grey man.
We didn't have to score as many under Pulis as we defended significantly better under him IMHO.

The window will go a long way to deciding how the season pans out. If we don't back our man it'll go to the wire because of the way we are trying to do things on the pitch with the incorrect tools. Allow him to sign two our three good quality players and get our missing 3 back on the pitch and there's no reason at all not to go for a top half finish.

Jamo
You answer your own question and that it my biggest concern (with regard to 'trying to do things with the incorrect tools')
That is exactly why yesterday bothered me so much.
In one way though, it wasn't a game that we had to win so not too much harm done but if we keep on with these tactics then I will be concerned.
