6 months in prison for sending some nasty messages over the internet?
6 fucking months?! He'd have got less of a punishment if he'd twatted one of them!

There's nasty comments and there's horrible Xenophobic shite that's directed at black player. Why should anyone have to put up with that? It's the same as the people that abuse Collymore. It's fucking sick and I'm glad the authorities are doing more about it. It's no different than ringing a black man / woman up and calling them ______. I'm glad the vermin are being prosecuted.

Prosecuted, yes. Jailed for 6 months...don 't talk shite! I agree with Fentown M. Petty drug users & habitual criminals get bound over for crimes that impact society far more than a few nasty words. Racism is wrong and it is illegal but we have far worse problems in our society than an ill educated, uninformed immature bigot. By the way. It is not fucking sick. You are over reacting and seem to have lost your sense of perspective. I am pretty confident that most people in the UK do not share your sense of distress about this issue.

I have to say that I have no distress at all that this racist has been given a 6 month sentence. He'll be out after 3 months, which seems reasonable. You'd have thought by now that people like him would have worked out that tweeting racist comments is illegal and that they would have stopped doing it - it really isn't difficult not to post racist remarks on twitter or facebook - most of us manage not to do it without any difficulty at all! If this sort of thing carries on then there will be a case for, maybe, insisting that the 50% reduction in the sentence is spent doing community service after the offender is released.

Racism isn't just "mere words" though, is it? The racists who killed Stephen Lawrence almost certainly grew up in a culture of thinking first, that it was ok to racially abuse black people and second, that they would not be punished if they did. After a few years of thinking that was ok, they probably felt that stabbing a black teenager was a logical next step. We'll probably never stop racism completely, but taking this sort of strong action against those who perpetrate racist abuse may stop some people from thinking they can do it with impunity and may stop others taking it a step further and escalating it into racial violence.

The freedom to express views, however distateful they may be, is a fundamental part of a just society. Just because you don't like what someone says does not mean they should be banged up for saying it. Obviously, this guy is a total twat, but the idea that he should go to PRISON for expressing views is more disgusting than whatever it was he said. Clearly, if he had gone up to our Mo and twatted him for being black, then put him away for as long as you can. But six months for something he said on twitter? Appalling. If you are ok with laws like this, then you are part of the problem.

Racism is wrong and this guy is obviously an utter cock, but where is the proportionality in this sentence??

You and Mr. Red think 6 months is ok, I think it is too much. I was also objecting to the idea that racism is "fucking sick". I can think of far worse crimes that are much sicker than an emotional tweet. I can understand your position above but why is racism a more serious crime than any other form of verbal abuse. Why not legislate in the same way for all threats after all abuse is abuse regardless of colour, creed etc. Most people get 1-2 warnings before going to prison. As far as I am aware no one was physically injured in this incident. Maybe the magistrate was not impressed with the defendants lame excuse, perhaps he had previous. I don't know. In the UK We are treating racism as a special form of abuse and I don't think we need to. It is abuse pure and simple and should be dealt with in the same way as any other threats , idle or otherwise.

To be honest the best punishment for this would be to publish their names and addresses so they can't hide behind their anonymity. People like this are all too often arsey little no marks who don't deserve the protection the internet can afford - we all know the type, snidey, no bollocks

So would you have no problem calling a black man / woman a 'nigger' or 'monkey' in the street? I'm far from the sensationalist Daily Mail news reader and far from distressed (though it was strongly worded), but there's far too many people on Twitter that believe it's fine to go and racially abuse people without any sort of reputation. This sort of thing is making the news more often and hopefully one day be a deterrent to the scummy wankers that think before they act.

A) because I don't think of black people in those terms and b) I like to think I am a reasonably intelligent, mature person. However, if I did choose to do so I would not expect to receive a 6 month jail sentence....and neither would I expect the black guy to go to jail if he punched me once as a result. If he knocked seven bells out of me and put me in hospital as a result then I would expect him to receive a proportionate sentence which IMO should be more than the one that I got for insulting him. Anyway, that discussion can be left for another day, as can how to educate the idiots who post this shite on Twitter. I'm done on this discussion now...it's hard work typing on an I-pad.

Ha, fair enough mate. I see what you mean but I think the sentences they're giving out are an example more than anything as this social integration bollocks is a relatively new thing to the law.

Ha, fair enough mate. I see what you mean but I think the sentences they're giving out are an example more than anything as this social integration bollocks is a relatively new thing to the law. But surely the responsibility of the law is to apply appropriate punishment for the crime committed, as and when guilt is proven. Making an example out of someone, by handing out a disproportionate sentence because their crime happens to be in the spotlight and taking up a lot of column inches, shouldn't come into it. Although I agree that in this case it obviously is. Tuum is right, unfortunately the Internet affords cowards the world over the anonymity they require to think it's acceptable to verbally abuse others, in many different ways and without repercussions. This is the attitude that needs to change IMO.
