I'm struggling to understand the logic of trying to bring on Matty Etherington as a sub in the 90th minute against Leicester. I can understand bringing on a late sub to 'wind down the clock' but Matty has not featured for several weeks and it was a cup tie. If it is the club's intention to sell him, then surely he would have been devalued by playing him for just one minute and rendering him 'cup tied'? In these circumstances surely it would have been preferable to use Muniesa as a last minute sub. If it is Stoke's intention to retain Matty, then why hasn't he featured before now? In the event, it turned out that the substitution wasn't made eventhough Matty was stripped off and ready to play.
For the purpose of clarity, I wish to point out that I have a high regard for Etherington and what he has done for Stoke, but I regard Assaidi as a better prospect right now,

Whoever wants him wouldn't give a shit if he's cup tied. We'd be lucky to get more than 250k for him anyway, so I don't think it really matters. He was doing it to waste time imo.

He'd struggle to shine in League One now, without trying to sound like a twat.

The logic is that he gets paid for coming on.

He said Matty's dad had thanked him for all the help over the years and said this was his last game. Now either Ethers senior can't be arsed watching us again or Matty's moving clubs. I wonder which?

Something happened on the pitch in the last minute which mean't that Etherington didn't actually come on as a sub, albeit he was stripped off and ready. My original point was to question the logic of intending to use him and cup tie him. Based upon previous responses, perhaps it was intended to be his 'swansong'

Yes Matty been good signing but should have gone in the summer. Think he'll go for next to nothing just to get him off the wage bill. Lost his pace so not sure what level he'll drop to??

Probaly to save the 'un-used sub bonus' in his wage packet. Matty's had his time but isnt up to the Prem now, free transfer to the Champ or below

Matty's the michael owen of this season with edu right behind him, out the door... With KJ's cup performances he'll get a nicer fee to a championship club now.

We'd be lucky to get 250K in all honesty with his wages so high even if he takes a huge cut his injury risk and age durastically decrease his fee. We will take a loss on him he should of gone last summer with the rest of the old guard ie delap, whitehead, nash etc...

With what he's done for this club I'd be happy for him to scoot up and down the warmup area on a mobility scooter all afternoon as long as he can be bothered.

I really don't think players getting cup tied is a problem like it was in the 80's and 90', certainly not in the FA Cup. European competitions possibly.
You only need to see all the players rested from PL sides today tells you whats more important.

Whelan was asking to come off for several minutes, it took Etherington an age to get ready and when he was the ball never went out.
