Surely it has to have something to do with our such poor array of songs?
Let's go through some of players for instance:
Bego Bego Bego Wilko Wilko Wilko USA USA USA Ryan Shawcross de de de Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuth Erik Pieters de de de Oooooo Steven Nzonzi Wheeeelann Charlie Charlie, Charlie Charlie Adam Super Super Jon, Super Jonny Walters Arnie Arnie Arnie de de de Oussama Assaidi
How embarrassing is that? It seems that if songs have more than 3 words in them, no one can be bothered to join in. Don't get me started either on songs for Robert Huth or Kenwyne Jones, where people only seem to pipe up when mentioning Steve Bruce or Rio Ferdinand. What on earth have those 2 got to do with Stoke?
It might be difficult to organise this, but I've always thought it would help if we could get a number of people in a pub or somewhere in Stoke the week before a game, everyone bringing their own different ideas for songs, and just see if we can get a couple of ideas together, and see whether or not they catch on. I've got no idea how many would turn up, but if the Supporters Club (do they even still exist??), the Supporters Council, or even Smudge could get behind it, maybe we'd have decent numbers turn up.
It may work, it may not, but surely it can't get any worse than the amount of happy clappy copycat songs we've got at the moment, which to me is one of the main reasons our atmosphere is so poor, both at home, and I'd say also away.

"Oh when the reds" "Go on Stoke" "Come on City" "Oh when the reds" *silence*
Away fans: "wheres your famous atmosphere?"
our reaction: "Oh when the reds"
It's become quite boring.

Think the Oatcake needs to do more to encourage the creation of new songs and the adoption of new songs - lets face it there's no other likely media outlet.
If someone creates a decent song this board needs to promote it - maybe pin it to the top for a few weeks and see if it catches on. Maybe publish it in the fanzine too.
New songs are nurtured by the away support and accepted by the home support. That seems to have broken down over the last few years. We have had one or two good new songs which have been sung away but not caught on at home. Not sure why.

I'm sure that has something to do with it mate but I don't remember our repertoire being any better in the first couple of years in the prem but the atmosphere was electric we just sang or shouted or howled something, anything. We just made noise. I thinks its more probably a combination of factors. We've become a bit sanitised, perhaps a bit complacent, we had to make noise back then to help the underdogs beat the big boys. We probably, subconsciously, think we now belong so WE don't have to try so hard. Also the football we've witnessed over the last 2 years has been largely uninspiring and therefore unlikely to generate an atmosphere. But your idea sounds like a good one it just needs some committed soul with time on his hands and an artistic soul to write us a song book. Over to you then Robin

Maybe the Oatcake should do a 'Songs for Team X' each week and decide on one or two of the best suggestions. Our atmosphere is terrible and we don't seem to have anything original any more.

Over to you then Robin We did at least have a few more inventive ones for the players. Abdoulaye, Ric, Pennant, Ethers, Tuncay, Mama all had pretty good unique songs but they don't play any more. Each year we seem to be less able to produce a decent song for our players which is why Arnautovic and Begovic simply get their names chanted on repeat. We also don't seem to have the same repertoire for taking the piss of other teams, we now tend to sit back and let them do it to us. 'Susan Boyle's your Mum' sang to Jimmy Bullard years ago when we played Hull was one of the funniest chants I had heard, but now it seems we just resort to WANKER WANKER WANKER or occasionally, if appropriate, 'you know what you are'. I think the excitement of being in the Prem made us more creative than we are now.

Go on Stoke isn't actually a song is it?
Years ago we used to have some great songs, but I think we've lost our charm and more importantly our bite at home.
We used to be able to generate a real aggressive atmosphere that used to make it a hard place for clubs and rival supporters to come.
Hate to say this, but; we've gone soft.

We need someone or something to hate, simple as that.
In the first season, it was a proper "everyone hates us, everyone's against us" thing, same in the second. In the third season we had loads to cheer about with the FA Cup and the football was exciting, especially during that run in the second half of the season. However, the past two seasons the football has been mainly dire and even the media have praised us at times so no one's been against us like the first two seasons. The only thing that would get us going without effort would be Aaron "A broken leg is worse than death" Ramsey and the cretins from North London but unfortunately we don't see him and them every week.
The best atmosphere this season came against Chelsea when John Terry decided to be the odious thug he is and it got a huge reaction. Even on Saturday, Villa were cynical, diving thugs and it got the crowd riled up and created a great atmosphere.

One reason is the novalty of playing in the prem has worn of, take Palace for instance, cracking at the minute but give it 4-5 year's in the prem (if they can) and it will go flat again.
Also i'm realy bored of oh when the red's. Cant remember singing it every game back in the chamionship. Our songs were tell the lads and delilah among many more. It seems we have become an un whitty predictable one song fan base.

I can't accept the novelty wearing off as an excuse. Surely you should always get behind your team, not just in it for the glory?

Several years of drudgery on the pitch, in particular away from home, killed the atmosphere, lots of fans have become almost apathetic. A good run on the pitch should restore some faith.

I think if we'd pushed on (or at least maintained) where we were at the end of the cup final season, then things wouldn't have tailed off in the stands anything like as much as they have done. However we had two years of mind numbing, horrible football, which broke a lot of people, especially away (where new songs are nutured) and this season, we haven't really gathered any sort of momentum so far. I agree that a good, positive run would see things start to get back on track somewhat. However regardless of what the players do on the pitch, it can't be denied that our repertoire of songs is nothing short of shocking.

Surely for arnie we could sing marko arnautovic to the jose mouriniho tune? Its not original but it better than chanting " arnie, arnie, arnie "

I really don't know why we sing 'Oh When the Reds' when we play Man U or Liverpool.
Surely that's more appropriate for the opposition?
We've never been just 'red'.

It's pathetic lately, the away games are just the same. however it still winds me up that if you go into a pub wherever we're playing a hour before kick off and our songbook is superb! Yet go to the game and it's oh when the reds!
We've got bread Alouette Bury me under the boothen Plus songs for players....
Bego has one, so as wilko, huth, Ryan, pennant, kenwynne, arnie, etc etc
This week utd sang 5 cantonas about 7 times and we couldn't even manage sing back the bass son to get summat going. The only time we sang was when the ref took the teams off and again it was oh when the reds!!

I'd have to disagree with that, as to me it's the same old 2 or 3 songs sung over and over again. As for these players songs you mention, how many of these have more than about 3 or 4 different words?
