What do you miss most...?
Could be the pipe smoke , could be the 'Golden Goal' girl , could be the white faces of the pot bank dust.....
In my particular case it is Jimmy Greenhoff...
How about you..?

Moustaches spring to mind.
Look at any of the old players, playing during that period, and they look like they're in their late forties!

The things that stick in my memory:
The overwhelming sense of impending violence as my dad marched me through the away fans and down dark, winter, terraced streets.
The blokes on the Boothen that I thought were wearing eye-liner till my dad told me they were miners.
Skol ashtrays, Double Diamond pumps, Golden Wonder crisps, old men in caps, fag smoke everywhere as the adults had a drink before kick off.
And the belief that Garth Crooks was the greatest.

The heat from Striker floodlights, Shoot League Tab Tables, the wonder of Figurini Pannini, the excess bubblegum generated from over investing in footie Cards, 7" vinyl, Logacta Chart Soccer, Angle-poise lamps, Grasshoppers, World of Sport, safety pins, sheepskin. Wirelesses. Correct punctuation and lists. Inter alia. Ho{l}mes

Standing just behind the goal and to the left a bit in the I Boothen when I was about 11. My uncle said 'stay there. I'll be back half time'. He'd bring me tea and a pie. Being old enough go up back o the Boothen. Standing on a beer crate in Boothen paddock peering over that painted white wall at knee height, didn't know what was going on but had fun making a right racket with a wooden rattle... Oh no, that's the sixties

Mid winter evening games played on snowy pitch Free Football League Review magazine inside the Programme. Stoke 9 Ipswich 1 Stoke 6 Villa 1 Stoke 6 Chelsea 2 Stoke 5 Arseholes 0 Stoke 7 Leeds 2 FA Cup and League Cup replay victories over Man Utd in 71-72. That was when FA and League cup were proper competitions. Seeing an Arseholes fan being apprehended by a police dog on Wheeldon Road. The dog had the cockney wankers bollox held gently between its teeth.

The things that stick in my memory: The overwhelming sense of impending violence as my dad marched me through the away fans and down dark, winter, terraced streets. quote] This strikes a chord with me particularly before the match. 10mins before kick off the junction next to The Vic was particularly interesting to a naive 7yr old. After the match, I could never understand why my dad was so keen to leave 5mins early to get on the PMT buses by the graveyard...I was oblivious to the post-match mayhem that happened in/around Stoke Town Centre & that graveyard for a long time.

This one's always stayed with me as I'd only just started supporting Stoke and it was the first time I'd seen us give anyone a good hammering. Another game That sticks with me is the 2-2 against Wolves the following month. That was the first time I'd experienced the last-minute mental. Apart from that, I reckon the muddy pitches and night-time matches at the Vic - just seemed to have a special atmosphere, and gave me something to look forward to after school!

All of the above, and so many old mates no longer with us.Loved Saturday pubs, full of Stokies all part pissed and happy. Mid week games and pubs, just the same as Saturday pubs, full of Stokies, part pissed and happy, and always, the anticipation of the next match. Those were the days, and all enjoyed at or around the Vic.Memories truly are made of this.

Shoot magazine (albeit being 3 months old before being on sale in Oz) Brian Moore's 'The Big match' Gordon Banks column in 'Tiger' Hugh Johns Star Soccer Alan Hudson/Jimmy Greenhoff/Denis Smith My 1972 League cup final LP....'it's a dull afternoon but perfect for football.....' (LP is long playing vinyl record for those that may be too young to know...) I was so excited as a youngster when that arrived in the mail all the way to country NSW. 'Potters Monthly' magazine from the southern supporters club. My only link to size able Potters news and match reports. Great excitement when that arrived each month.

Little Borough Arms in Hanley for an under age pint or two, walking with mates down from Hanley to the Vic via the park, the Vic the boothen end the paddock, the atmosphere the smoke the smell of onions from the greasy burger/ hot dog stands, paying on the gate, proper ground, piss reeking urinals, the pushing from the back of the boothen, battering Spurs, Man U fans etc who ventured on to out territory inside the ground, the hairs standing on the back of the neck as kick off approached, the docs, braces, Crombie's, the banter, the ambushing of away supporters in the streets around Stoke up to the station and probably most of all the chants most now long forgotten, fond simple memories god I miss the Vic.

Expected a good hard game with proper tackles and goals, shouting get 'em off at the young golden goal lass, Bovril and a pie and the walk home all talking about the game.Big crowds and standing up. Worst bit was when they were building the D road and half-enders were flying about between "supporters". Happy days but nostalgia is like that and plays tricks on the memory.

Tackles going in,left right and centre, players just getting up and getting on with it,because they knew it was a contact sport, unlike the pussies who play the game today.

How about you..? Watching Stoke's 3 greatest players all in the same team; Greenhoff, Hudson and Smith, maybe throw TC in there as well. The sight of nearly retired Dennis Smith, giving chase to Cyril Regis, who had a 10 yard start, catching him with a sliding tackle from behind, winning the ball with a perfect tackle, the Boothen end going mad, and Smithy looking up and smiling. What a Pro, what a man!

My dad driving us to the game in our clapped out old Morris 1100 parking up in Birks Street off the Boothen Old Road. Standing in the Butler Street enclosure and then getting some sweets & a pound of sausage from a shop on the corner of Birks Street on the way back to the car. Driving back to Birmingham down the M6 hoping the car won't blow up. Magic days
