I'm guessing that when they turn the filter on, there will be a fair amount of people that will be "happy" to have porn blocked by their ISP. Or at least, that's what they are going to tell the missus... There will probably be loads of ways to tunnel through the block, but it's worth being careful how you do it, as you may get screwed, so to speak... Toolbars are not your friendNote to ************** when you get here: Yes, I do believe this is the thin end of yet another internet control wedge.

Blocking porn on the internet is like beer in a pub; coffee in starbucks; books in waterstones. It's like telling hospitals that they aren't allowed to treat injured or sick people. It's a disgrace, what are men supposed to do with the internet now?

It's a disgrace, what are men supposed to do with the internet now? Get a VPN. Private Internet Access is as fast as hell, works on Windows, OSX, iOS, Android. You can log on from about 20 different countries and with up to 5 different devices. Very easy to set up too. I use a VPN for privacy and to get the UK BBC site and iPlayer working in Thailand. I would imagine its just as effective for the porn blocker in the UK. Anyway, I thought you could opt out if you wanted too? However, you'd be bonkers to go any where near a porn site without a VPN, Firefox running NoScript, an ESET firewall, and something Little Snitch.

It's funny that they block porn yet allow sites that receive money for sick individuals to watch snuff videos. Brilliant logic!

If a woman walks into a pub with most of her tits hanging out and I look at them I am a pervert. If I walk into a pub with my knob hanging out and a woman looks at it...yup...I am a pervert...Just can't win.

Private Internet Access is very fast and simple (Mac or PC) You can login from 10 different countries. I'd leave Tor for people that really need it to be honest. It's slow too. Many Tor end nodes are now ran by the NSA nowadays, but it's great for anonymity. I only want privacy, there's a big difference. Whatever you do, stay off Google (ixQuick is good alternative) run Firefox with the Noscript add-on, change your email from Gmail or Hotmail and use Thunderbird instead of Outlook or Apple Mail. Turn off the Windows or Apple firewall AFTER you get an ESET firewall. Little Snitch on the Mac is brilliant too for monitoring port activity. Be paranoid about security.

Im of the opinion that trying to hide your online presence just puts you nearer the top of the list of people the government keeps an eye on. You can have all the VPNs, port blockers etc you want, that stuff takes about 30 seconds to get around in reality. The only way to truly be anonymous is erase your internet profile completely, log on from internet cafes etc.

I use a VPN for iPlayer and the UK version of the BBC website to be honest. You can never be truly anonymous, but you can make yourself more trouble than it's worth to a number of criminal gangs. The best thing you can do is secure your router. It's free and pretty easy to do if you read up a little. How do you get around your local wirefall Brits?

In mainland China VPN's are easy to come by - the government don't really seem to care if expats get around the rules.

Not everyone's cup of tea but it's my favourite city by a mile. Spent a few months there back in 2011, was staying in Causeway Bay. Love Soho and the midtown escalator, magic place.
