Why is it that we never manage to attract players of real talent ? I mean we sent scouts to South America and the only player we managed to get out of all the wealth of talent in that continent was arismendi, who was crap. Other teams go to France and manage to sign some really talented players such as cabaye and gouffran, whilst the only French player we got was the very epitome of crap Vincent pericard. We bought so much crap we could open a recycling plant - edu, ness, Shea all hopeless shit. It's really baffling as if we do it on purpose.

I'm not sure that we have any issues 'attracting' players.
Rather we simply don't have enough of a scouting network to find them!
It's only in the last four years or so that we have begun to seriously look abroad for players (especially America)
It will take time for us to get the right people in the right places and to make decent links abroad.

But why America and ignore so much talent there is next door in France and Belgium ? Newcastle have build a very strong team with French players and others from the Dutch league. They are light years ahead of us at the moment and the reason is that they buy talented players from France while we buy crap from america

Maybe we felt like America was an 'untapped' market? Wigan apart not many clubs have ventured into the American's looking for talent.

Americans are cheap. For example, Robbie Findley, a striker who played in the 2010 World Cup, and a starter for one of the teams in the MLS Cup final makes 87,300 dollars a year (about 53,000 pounds) This is a hair above the league's median salary. The average salary is inflated to double that amount by the Designated Player or "Beckham Rule" that allows teams to have two players on the roster that are not subject to the salary cap (Henry, Dempsey, Donovan, etc). Therefore, the median shows a much more accurate number with regards to what most players in the MLS make.
Because we (Stoke) try to keep a low payroll, and Americans don't demand high wages because the domestic league pays peanuts, we signed Cameron et al.
Unfortunately we Americans play soccer instead of football, so you get what you pay for.

1) Newcastle are not light years ahead of us. A few games ago they were below us and people were hounding them for having no English players in there team.
2) Gouffran is not talent, why the fuck you used him as an example I dont know when they have Sissoko, Ben Arfa etc
3) Our previous manager never stepped foot out of the UK, buying and trusting domestic shit like Upson, Woodgate, Palacios, Crouch, Carew, Owen rather than taking a punt.
4) We were also in for Remy and kind of found Demba Ba, just because we havent signed anyone doesnt mean we're not looking
5) Coever coaching came into play last season/year before, they're at Real Madrid right now so hopefully forming some Spanish links.
6) I wouldnt call Ness/Edu/Shea scouted shit. Edu was free and probs came with good reviews from Ness/Cameron. He was free and a squad filler. Ness was also free and had potential although a bit injury prone. Risk worth taking.
Brek Shea you cant comment on. He's never played when fit. Last year under TP he played when still unfit and played ok, not good not bad just ok. This season hes played a few times coming back from injury. Needs to get match fit but he was dubbed the next big thing in America for a reason. Give the lad a chance ffs.
7) It'll take time,im 100% sure Hughes and his team already have some form of scouting going on. He found Kompany, Dembele, De Jong, McCarthy, Samba from abroad and Im sure hes looking to do the same
But yeah, the main reason is TP. As much as the guy was a legend he trusted domestic experienced players over new talent by a mile, and he just was not interested in anything to do with the academy or scouting.

We have to remember that prior to our promotion to the Premier League our scouting system was literally none-existent, one-man-and-his-dog kind of stuff.
It will take time for us to develop a successful scouting network, just as it will take time for our academy to become successful.
I think that our American signings haven't been too bad.
Cameron has been a decent signing for us
Edu was, and still is, just a squad filler. He seems like an honest professional and certainly hasn't rocked the boat in terms of moaning about his lack of game time.
Shea is still relatively young and I think that he has something about him. I think he really needs to go out on loan as his game time due to injuries and competition in the squad has been limited.
Arismendi ... where do you start? The kid was a full international and was classed as a real talent at the time. Obviously he never settled here and it would be interesting to know where he is now?
