23 years without top flight football, whats your worst memory, mines pretty recent really, Stoke v Gillingham, play off semi final 2nd leg at Gillingham......do i have to say anymore, Took me 6 hours to drive down and ruined by a poor a referee performance as ive seen, We were still in it right to the end even after the sendings off.....that was a long long drive back, didnt get in till 4am and had work at 7am....never felt so low as that being a stokie since then.....

The 7-0 Birmingham game was pretty low. And losing 1-0 at nuneaton sticks in the mind aswell!

Birmingham 7-0 was a killer for me. Swindon 6-0 in 88/89 was another horror show. Relegation in 88/89 was another 'mare. We have had many many bad memories, but now we are creating some good ones, let's revel in that!!!
mmmmmm revels!!!

It's got to be getting relegated in the 97/98 season. I couldn't believe we where going into that hell hole of a league again. After all the optimism of the new Stadium we were faced with third division football AGAIN.

I think we need to be careful here. We are not there quite yet and if for some reason we don't do it this will probably be the biggest fook up and bad memory ever. Apart from that, the 7 - 0 drubbing by Birmingham ranks quite high. The re-appointment of Tony Pulis was a time for sadness for some, but don't we just love him now. The crook that is Peter Coates buying the club back is another black day in the last 23 years. How lucky he's been in the last two years. ;D Heres hoping that with in the next 8 days we'll be in the Premiership and we can put the last 23 years behind us.

I think strangely enough it was the loss at home to Leicester in the play offs, after that everything started to once more spiral out of control and a few years later we were back in the wilderness again. If we had beaten Leicester and gone up, who knows how different our recent history may have been.
There have been plenty of lows in that time, with luck this weekend will see them all soothed a little with a promotion party to follow against Leicester and I would love the chance to send them into the wilderness, that would be delightfully ironic.
Though one particular match would still be the 7-0 against Birmingham, that was a nightmare from beginning to end.

Too many to choose from really. The unveiling of Chic Bates and Dirk Schreuder to bring in a brave new dawn at the Brit is right up there. It's then when I first accepted there was a good chance I would not see top flight football again in my lifetime.

A 0-3 loss to Mansfield away in the LDV Vans trophy, Mick Kennedy getting sent off in the process. As low is it gets.
Northampton in the same trophy, 1-1, 3,500 at the Vic.
All happy memories...

Ah yes, the Jez Moxey masterplan. A warning for any chairman of the perils of letting a Chief Executive make important football decisions.

Where do I start?
Of all the many disasters it has to be the Brum 0-7 and worse, the rioting that followed - the only time in the 23 years when I felt ashamed to be a Stokie.

The 4-0 away to Wigan, followed by 3-1 home loss to Chester (if I remember rightly) which took us to our lowest ever league position, and ultimately got Ball sacked.
The sheer pisspoorness of the whole team under Brian Little somehow trumps even the Ball era though. I remember thinking we'd never make a cash signing or even buy anyone I'd ever heard of again. Oblivion beckoned.
Some truly appalling moments, which vastly outweigh the good moments in the last couple of decades. We deserve a good karma payback for all that I reckon.

Lots and lots I could mention, the 7 - 0 obvious choice but circumstances were as much a consequence of that result. 8 - 0 againt Liverpool never expected to get dicked that many but for me the Man City game when we were relegated back to Div 3 that hurt so much after expectations in the summer the promise of a BIG NAME manager shiny new stadium too. Horrible horrible feeling. Jut really really hope things go to plan tomorrow so that memory can be erased once and for all GOOOOOOOOOARRRNNNN STOKE !!!!

well my worst memory of the last 23 years is my wife being diagnosed with breast cancer in April last year and after her suffering with 12 months of chemo and radiotherapy and losing her hair she is gradually on the mend so to have her almost back to good health and with stoke touching distance of the premiership i feel lucky my worst stoke memory would probably be the 7 nil Birmingham game

Agree with you re: the Leicester game, came up on spec and got a ticket from a tout outside. Remember feeling really low after that, was it Muzzy Izzet who scored for them?

Just a thought, but wouldn't it be fitting if we beat Leicester on the last day of the season to ensure promotion and also to send them down? That would make the memory of Gary Parker's goal less bitter!

Stoke v Gillingham Play off Semi 1st leg
Right behind a Andy Hessenthaler 35 yard screamer into the top corner - atmosphere just changed completely and although we won the game, you just knew the momentum was gone and we'd fuck it up 2nd leg............. we did.

i remember the 3-1 chester defeat. Their fans singing 'you're not famous anymore!'
Losing 1-0 at home to Reading on my 13th birthday, think it was the same season.
7-0 v Brum. That HAS to be the lowest.

Mine was on my 13th birthday when we got ripped apart by Cardiff and peter thorne scored a hat-trick, I remember thinking it was going to be another relegation fight, what a crappy birthday that was.

"Watching Wardy flap the ball into his own net agains Warsaw in the second leg of the playoffs. "
Was this the same match where the floodlights failed and Gudjon was desparately trying to get the match abandoned? I'll sign up for one of those please.
Also the Millwall 9 men debacle, even worse my coach broke down on the way home. the 7-0. 4-0 away at Rotherham was a bad one as well.

Any of the play-off defeats, especially Gillingham (heroic but still dissapointing). Losing to Cambridge united at home 3-2. The most sorry one for me though is losing 6-1 to wigwam in 2001.
