Throughout history it stands to reason that there is one position on the field we have rarely been found wanting in, A Goalkeeper. I was wondering who everyone feels are our Top 5 (in order) I'll have a pop at what I think it could be; 1.Banks 2.Begovic 3.Fox 4.Soronsen 5.Simo

Three from my lifetime: Banks, Begovic and Sorensen.
Two historic: Roose (who was so good they tried to throw him in the Thames) and Herod (simply because he scored a goal while playing on the wing with a broken arm in the days before subs).
Sorry to Shilton, Fox and Farmer.

Don't think we have had too many bad goal keepers. Would be unfair to just throw a few names in.

Shilton was bloody awful for us. Best I've seen...Foxy,Beggers,De-Goey,Tommy,Crossley Thought he was generally good; exceptional in a cup defeat away to Everton, had a 'mare home to the Geordies one Saturday. I remember though he wanted away as quickly as possible when we were relegated and was a mardy arse in the handful of games he played for us in Div 2, which really pissed me off at the time, but in retrospect you can't really blame him. He did go on to win the League that year with Forest. I'd still have him in my top 5 Stoke keepers.

Jason Kearton was outstanding when we had him on loan from Everton.
Grobelaar and Crossley equally as good/important for us.

Can only go for the ones I've seen play, so...
1 - Begovic 2 - Fox 3 - Crossley or Sorensen 4 - DeGoey or Sorensen 5 - Simonsen or Sorensen
Sorensen in there somewhere but I just cannot figure where.
* I heard the boy Banks was a pretty decent 'keeper!

Peter Shilton was one of the best keepers of all time, however he was not good for us. He wanted a high back four when we had CBs who struggled on the turn, but who were great with the ball in front of them. It's for reasons of his form for us, rather than his pure ability that he does not feature higher in my list.
1: Banks ( the best ever, for anyone, any time) 2: Bego ( I think he is that good! He will go on to play for the very biggest teams in the world) 3: Peter Fox( better than most outside of Stoke gave him credit for- Carson played for England!?) 4: Crossley ( possibly TP'sbest signing given the context) 5: John Farmer( if he'd been at any any other club he'd have played 500+ top flight games)

I'm not going to have another rant about what an overrated keeper Shilton was. Ballsed up v Poland in 73. Let some cheating little Argie punch the ball in the net in 86 and took half an hour to get back on his line for a deflected free kick in 90. (And didn't get anywhere near any of the resulting penalties). Slow, cumbersome musclebound donkey who like most keepers was a good shot stopper and looked great when he was tipping 25 yarders over the bar. And yes, he was crap for us. ( shit. That was a rant wasn't it?)

League matches carried on in those days when there were international matches. A Biddulph lad, he joined the club at a very young age leaving Wolstanton Grammar before he should have done and within a year or so displaced two international keepers to get into City's first team. He was a fantastic basketball player at school and got into the schoolboys international team if I remember correctly. He had a shaky period just before Banksy arrived, which is probably why Waddington went for Banksy, but got better as years progressed. Anyone know where he is now?

I've spoken to people who are hardened Stoke fans, I've spoken to people who are casual Stoke fans, I've spoken to lots of people who are 50 odd and above and they all tell me that Shilton was fucking rubbish for Stoke. Some even get angry about it to this day. I presume it was true?

The one accusation I've seen a few fire at him is that it was him that cost us the title in the mid 70's some time.

I know in the early/mid 80s when at Southampton he got absolute dogs abuse from the Boothen for some reason.
