Reckon you cant go wrong with iPhone or Samsung right now. Apple is losing market share hand over fist but its going to take longer than your next upgrade cycle before they fall off the radar. Personally i cant stand iOS but thats just me.

I really loved my iPhone4 when it first came out and I still like the simplicity of iOS, but it is starting to feel a little dated. I'm now using a Samsung Galaxy Note2 which I really like and I recently picked up an iPhone5 for the missus - and it's a beautiful thing, in fact it's like a piece of jewellery and she really loves it too. But the screen! What are Apple thinking about? It's way, way too small. When I look at that iPhone screen I think to myself "how the hell can you get anything done on anything that small?" I've really settled into my Note2 and i'm loving the 5.5" screen. Big screens are the best development in mobile for years. I can do everything on the web in desktop mode (full size like a PC, as opposed to the irritating mobile version of a website).
If you decide to go with the Note2, at first it will seem like a cumbersome slab of plastic and glass, especially if you're moving up from a smaller screen, but please trust me on this - after 2 weeks it will be no more obtrusive or difficult to manage than an iPhone or any other phone for that matter. The battery life is also class leading for a smartphone too, I usually get 2-3 days out of it between charges whilst the missus is charging her iPhone every night.
Android is a little more complex than iOS and it takes a few weeks to master, but once you get into it you'll like it. In truth, there's very little to choose between the latest versions of Android and iOS, but the small screen on the iPhone5 is the deal breaker for me. The larger screen sizes that Samsung are known for make the iPhone a fairly redundant device.
The Galaxy Note3 is out anytime now so you may well be able to grab a Note2 on the cheap as its the previous model. You could also consider the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Google also do a brilliant value Android phone - the Nexus4, it sells for £199 on the Google Play store. After 2 or 3 weeks you'll realise that any of these phones will be better than an iPhone, but for me the Note2 is a really brilliant piece of kit that is great to use.

Not everyone wants a big screen, i couldn't use a phone with a big screen on a daily basis. How big are the mini droid phones

How big are the mini droid phones The "mini" Android phones are growing too, my wife has an S3 Mini and it's 4 inches, the new ones seem to be around 4.2 and 4.3 inches. They tend to be a generation behind in terms of tech, although this appears to be changing for the better. I agree with **************, unless you've got very small hands, larger screens are more productive and you get used to them. They're a bit like the saying, "once you've had black, you never go back"! The Nexus 4 is ridiculous value for money at the moment, but it's been discontinued so time is quickly running out if you fancy one. The next Nexus is due next month and I expect Google to sell it at a very good price.

Agreed. I've got the One X plus. Wouldn't swap it for anything on the market aside from the new 'One' especially the IPhone or the Galaxy. The screens on the IPhones are too small and the screens too easy to smash.

I'm due an upgrade soon & decided on the HTC One Mini Didn't even know they'd brought this out. Obviously there's a market for it but I'd never go back to anything smaller than the normal 'One' now. Feels the perfect size. Think some of the features would be diminished by a smaller screen.

Anyone got the Samsung S4 mini? Any good? It's a decent phone, but it's trading on the S4 name, that's not as powerful as an S3. The HTC One mini and Sony Z1 Mini (about to be released) look better phones, but if you already like Samsung phones, then it's not a bad choice.

What a bunch of sad bastards queuing for a phone. I don't get it at all. You phone, you text and that's it. What else could you want a phone for? Maybe I'm just getting old.

Android for me. Bit of advice tho. If you're thinking of buying android do a bit of research and go for one of the top phones. Best you can afford. Simply because there are dozens, maybe hundreds, of crap android phones out there.

I have to say I'm not far off hating it, if I could go back I would, it looks like a five year old has designed it, not a lot of consistency through out the design either.

I think it's quite a decent step in the right direction for Apple. Johnny Ive was the responsible for the skin too. They've also dropped the hideous skeuomorphism (the green felt in games centre, the leather in address book etc) and chosen a light version of the very clean and honest Helvetica Neue as the default font throughout. As a designer myself I'd have to say that from a user experience and interface level it is actually more consistent than before, but you may well see it in a different way, as design is a highly personal and subjective matter. I think on the whole it's been pretty well received though. I think the next version will see changes that go much deeper as Apple's new OSX/iOS design team collaboration starts to bear fruit. It it does keep dropping my wifi connection though and that is doing my nut!

If I was Johny Ive I would seriously consider not including it into my portfolio, I understand what they they have gone for but I really think they've missed the mark by some distance, it feels to me like they have worried about what others are doing (windows, android) and tried to cater for everyone instead of going for something new and inovative design wise like they have in the past, I think its the Helvetica that is stopping me from hating it tbh as I've got a bit of a thing for it, if it was workable everything would use helvetica if I had my way , I do agree with you about the skeuomorphism though, that is a plus, but I suppose a must with the direction they have taken. Functionality wise, for what I use it for, there isn't really a big difference from what I can see, srangely I think its doing better for me with the WIFI seems to hold it in places in my house it never used to. Anyway as you say these things are very subjective, everyone will have a different experience with it.

I think they had to do something relatively quickly to keep pace with Android development. Google are notoriously fast at introducing new versions and for constantly improving software. Apple have been sluggish in comparison. Chrome for instance has had at least 10 more significant version releases than Safari, even though it's not been around for as long. Essentially iOS7 is basically a re-skin.
I think we'll see a big jump in iOS8 and I'm really expecting magic tricks with iPhone6 and they have to 100% introduce bigger screens - then I'll go back. 5c will ultimately become the cheaper iPhone that will sit underneath iPhone6. Apple simply could not launch the 5c at a low price point because of their premium position in the market, it's not how they do things. It will come down next year though.
On the phone front i'll stick with my Note2 for now though.
