It was only 20 minutes... But...Arnie looked good, I think he will end up replacing Etherington soon. Ireland looked a little rusty. Not sure if he will be a better than Whelan, and I'd be surprised if he displaces any of our other CM's in the starting 11.

They'll both be good players for us. We kinda lost our momentum with the subs. I thought it was a big mistake taking Adam off. Walters would of been first gone for me. Jones going off was where we lost the momentum Yep, I sure wish we had Jerome to sub in for him instead of Crouchy. I don't know if the loan to Crystal was connected to the loan to bring Ireland in (like maybe they did it to pay for Ireland's huge wage.) But if we did send Jerome away to pay for Ireland I think we've made a huge mistake.

I liked the Ireland signing. He'll need a few games after being in the wilderness but its basically going to be him or Adam in the starting 11 and then the other to potentially come on for 30 minutes. Good depth in quality for that role.
Marko made a massive impact straight away, very positive. He looks to have a good work rate also (perhaps helped playing for Austria and being under pressure a fair bit?). That free kick though - probably just about caught up with Voyager 1.

Arnie was very promising, strong, direct, fast and skillfull, nearly scored at the last minute too with a clever effort.
Ireland was OK and will get better when he gets more game time and gets his confidense back.
Happy to have them both.

Arnautovic had a cracking free kick near the end which is probably just about to land somewhere near Chester!

I'm not convinced by Ireland, he didn't look ready yet. It was only a brief appearance though. Arnautovic showed a lot of promise. He looked lively in attack and quite sharp defensively. I can't wait to see him start. I find myself fully in agreement with this assessment. Arnie shows loads of promise. He can be dynamite. Ireland sadly looked like a fish out of his bowl.

Arnoutavic was ok apart from that freekick. True, but did you had yesterday other free kick shooter on pitch? Marko can do that better. At his foreign club Werder Bremen, he wasnt allowed to take free kicks. there are a few players who take them before (aaron hunt, kevin de bryne, zlatko junuzovic and so on) But the truth is that he have the skills for a good free kick. If he get more trust in itself, it could be a big part of his game. For example or Maybe Mark Hughes counts on Marko Arnautovic and his freekick skills. Could be a win-win situation ;-) Back to the game yesterday. I think S. Ireland have to be more integrated in the team than he could be important for the Potters. Does anybody know why he was transfered from Aston Villa (no place in the starting squad?) This brief appearance from Marko Arnautvic shows that he wants a "new beginning" in his career after the ugly years @ Werder Bremen (which has several reasons) Yesterday he did well. Cant await the next game. Maybe as a starter. But big compliment to stoke. All players did a great job yesterday. It was unexpected for me.

Marko has a very dangerous technique concerning freekicks..either the ball is sent wide into the sky or with the results posted before....all he needs is the self-confidence to do the free-kicks, but i think he should aquire this confidence at first on the field, before he does the free-kicks.

Jones going off was where we lost the momentum Agreed. It was immediately noticeable. I never thought I'd miss KJ that much, but it seemed a lot of the focus and cohesion drifted away from our attack. Arnie stiffened the left side but there was nothing left in the middle.

I agree patial.....How do get self-confidence? One opportunity is...that you (as a new member of this club) take the freekick and curl them in the top corner^^ Of course, it looked very miserable but better this way than he got no self-confidence and won´t take the freekicks. And Pls tell me, who in squad can take free kicks well? except pennent?

You can just tell when a player has a good touch and he falls into that category.
Instantly at ease with the ball at his feet and very strong on it. Very few players will knock him off the ball, which is very strange for a technical player.
Can't wait to see him in the team again. Im very excited by him.

Sorry, i don´t know the team of Stoke....i think, it´s better, if Marko does the free-kicks after some good Performances on the field, because in Bremen he lost much of his self-confidence.

Both Etherington and Adam usually take our free kicks, Whelan and Wilson are known to chip in to. We've not really had a dead ball specialist of any note. The Pennant one the other week was the last one to go in straight from the free kick since Huth smashed one in, in our FA cup season, I believe.

Did Ireland look a bit chubby? I didn't go and I couldn't tell on MOTD with no close up shot but I was reading the Man City message board and a few of them were saying they couldn't believe how fat he looked

Jones going off was where we lost the momentum Spot on. That's the way I saw it as well. We GAINED momentum when Arnie and Ireland came on, we LOST it when Jones was injured and replaced by Crouch. As Luke45 and others have suggested, we'd probably have been better to have brought Pennant on when Jones went off and moved Arnie to the central striker role. I can quite understand why Hughes didn't do that on Arnie's debut but it would probably have been effective. Arnie is going to be a good un I think. Not the same style of player as Fuller but seems to have Fuller's ability to make things happen and looks as strong as an ox and technically sound I thought that, given his total lack of match fitness, Ireland did ok. He kept it simple with short accurate passes - which was the sensible thing to do in his first competitive game since January. He looks calm under pressure - he was involved in both our attacks in the last few minutes and his short pass to Arnie for the lob at the end of the game was spot on at a very frenetic time of the game. I think he'll come good. What I like is that, although he'll be competing with Adam for one place, they are very different types of player and DO genuinely give us a plan A and a plan B. I suspect that in time Ireland will get more game time than Adam because he doesn't have Adam's defensive frailties. I'm chuffed to buts that we have both of them available with N'Zonzi and Wilson as the defensive pairing. Three out of those four looks a good central midfield to me.

Obviously its early days but Ireland just floated about and did nothing for me. Arnoutavic was ok apart from that freekick. I wouldnt start either of them based on there cameos tho as we didnt look as threatning. Thats probs due to Adam and Etherington putting in good performances tho Don't agree re Ireland and we did look more threatening towards the end. In fact thought they both did ok given the short time they were on the pitch. Marco looked really fired up too and if that final chip had been a few inches lower, well the resulting mental would have been something to behold. Plus he put in a few critical defensive tackles too, all good for me. Ireland looked calm on the ball and helped us to push on, given time I think he is going to show real class playing for a manager that knows him well.

Adam was fucked and Ethers was our worst player imo. KJ going off is where it changed. Pennant should have come on and Walters be thrown down the middle.
