All i remember was it was a night match at Villa and had to get at least a draw and hope other results went for us. We lost 1-0 and we were down. Anyone fill in the missing gaps for me. If i remember right not many Stokies in attendance and we stood on the open terrace opposite the Holt end and they were in the process of building that stand they now have. Remember Villa fans taking the piss as we made our way back to the coach cos we were down. And feeling like shit as i waited outside the old Registrar in Stoke for a bus to take us home. I really really wanted to cry Anyone remember what year it was and anymore details ?

Can't really give you any more details other than it was the 1976/77 season and on the final Saturday of the season (two days before the Villa game) we lost 3-1 at West Brom.

1977
I went as well, Monday night
we needed a result in our last 2 away games, West Brom and Villa, which we both lost
Coventry and Bristol City then played out a 2-2 draw knowing that a point for each of them would send Sunderland down

Didn't Coventry purposely delay the kick off by half an hour so they would know the outcome of Sunderland's game?

think in the second half they were just tapping it about knowing they were both safe, my brother still goes on about it

I went that game, four of us in a car, we were quite easy to pick out by the villa fans on the way back to the car, few stones getting lobbed at us. I do remenber being back in the pub 35 minutes after we left Villa, driver was a nutter

"1976/77 season" My second season, I was dead happy. Not exactly what you've been promising me for the last four years this, is it dad!? I can't remember a thing about it, other than not being happy. (I was dead-happy three seasons later though!) ah

I was there too, with the usual suspects. Quite a few Stokies there but it was such a muted atmosphere, and we were spread out on the open end ( Witton Lane?). I do remember that we actually played well. John Ruggeiro played out of his skin but it was all too late. Dark days.

I was there too. I'm fairly certain it was Andy Gray who scored from a penalty. I'd say, and its thirty years ago, that there was c1000 Stokies present. I seem to remember Stoke/Villa fans being mixed. No segregation. A bit like our own Stoke End at The Vic. I travelled down with my dad and two lads up the road in a wee Mini. I can remember the Stoke fans being quite stoic and a VERY long chant of "we'll support you ever more" ringing around the away end for most of the second half.
This was my first away match. What an induction to supporting Stoke away. I was 9.
