Villa relied exclusively in youth last season with potential value in the market- we are relying largely on older players past their best with no resale value. Villa relied on a front 3 with pace, flair, creativity and goals- we are relying on a 33 year old 6 ft 7 striker who moves at the speed of a snail and two wide forwards in Etherington and Walters who have no pace, can't score and create fuck all. Sorry for not seeing the similarities between us and the Villa of last season. I think it's clear we're trying our hardest to go down that route though rossi. It will take time so relax and (hopefully) enjoy the ride! The manager and players are trying their hardest yes.........over to you Denise and Co

Another club down on its arse that have appeared to leap frog us. So they should because they are a massive club.
Where is our £100million legacy? Unless the Chairman backs his new man with serious cash then the short termism of the previous manager will come back to haunt us. That is unless Sparky can perform a miracle.

Huge respect to Paul lambert, he stuck too his methods all last season even when it looked like Villa were doomed.
He trusted youth and stuck with i, obviously, he was very fortunate to unearth an absolute gem in Benteke and keep him for another season but Im guessing thats what a decent scouting system can do for you.
Theres some real talent in the Belgian leagues yet Stoke seem to pursue anything from the Disney League over the pond.
Villa look good this season.

I'd hope that our 'eveolution' will be less painful than Villa's. I don't expect us to concede 60 plus goals this season.

Does anyone else think that Villa are just having an early patch of form?
I saw (glimpses of) their 1st match last week and their defending still looks very poor at times but, their quality on the counter attack is fantastic which thus far has dug them out of potential holes.
Will they stand the test of time?

Fair comment Vahl..... as posted before, I don't think it will be plain sailing for them - a bit up and down - but I think they're on the way to becoming a very good team.

The only thing I will say about Villa is their system is far better suited on the counter attack away from home as their forwards have pace to burn. Be interesting to see how they get on at Villa Park against teams that will sit deeper and close the space down that the likes of Agbonlahor look to fill. Think they'll be just fine this season but I'd still say lower half of the table..........

First half of last season they were in a similar position to the one we are in now.
Second half of last season they looked a very good team and they look like continuing that this season. Lambert is doing a quality job there

Pace is absolutely crucial to be successful in todays game. Villa have bags of it. We have the square root of f all of it. As walcott shows, football is easy if you have pace! Cameron Jerome being the exception that proves the rule. exactly. Jerome is the worst footballer on the team but is actually our most dangerous attacking player, just because he has pace.

Hello.
I am a Villa fan (you'll be unsurprised to learn). I think the major thing we have got right this time around is give Lambert time and support, and be prepared to suffer some awful results along the way.
It looked way better in the last third of last season, and has so far this season, but there is still a long way to go. I reckon we will likely finish about 9th or so this season, maybe do OK in the cups, but like most Villa fans, for me the most important thing is that qualitatively we continue to improve.
We had four fruitful years under O'Neill, but playing to a style which was limited and getting more out of date (see what happened when he tried it at Sunderland). Houllier, for all his criticism, actually started to get us playing differently in his season, but Lerner then threw all that away overnight with the truly unbelievable (even now, a couple of years later) decision to employ McLeish. The vast majority of us didn't really care he came from Blues, we were more bothered about his poor record and history of negative football, and that is what we got.
Coming off the back of that year, Lambert was guaranteed a decent level of support.
He has done very well with his purchases, on the whole, and identified the youth system products who could make the step up, and he has also reinvigorated some players who were around in the MON era - Fabian Delph has been excellent since the last third of last season, for example. Brad Guzan was actually released by the club and immediately called back by Lambert.
It will be hugely up and down for a while, I reckon, but it's very very entertaining to watch it happen. The manager and players all seem to understand they've got the support they need - look at some of our awful runs of results last season, but at no point did I ever hear so much as one song about it not being good enough - and it seems to help their confidence.

He clearly has an eye for a player as well. Benteke is an absolute find.

At least they built a new squad last season , we seem to have done nothing so far but I will wait til 2nd Sept I think this is a fair point. Even with Bent on their books, who had cost them £20 odd million or something stupid the year before and who would have been on ridiculous wages, Lambert was still able to go out and spend £8 million on Benteke, without having to sell Bent first. I think a lot of Stokies will feel a whole lot more comfortable, once Mark Hughes is seen to have been backed in a similar fashion to Lambert. Villa are a miles bigger club than us though, they will have that extra room financially.

And I suppose Agbonlahor is a worldbeater then, he just runs very fast in a straight line just like Jerome but the difference is Lambert has faith in him. We should have persevered with him away from home last season instead of Crouch.

I thought Villa were one for the drop but now fear they will finish above us. Arsenal result stands on its own merit, but what really impressed me was how they buonced back from conceding early on he road, didn't collapse, and came back to win.
I am sure that Geezer from Villa who came on here a few weeks ago singing their praises will pull up my posts and give me dog's abuse. Hope he has a life by now and forgets ....
