Just watched the highlights and seen the stats, they're fluid, competitive, young and I think they will break the top six after seeing their last two performances! Where do you feel we are in relation to them?
I think we would struggle against them and believe they would play us off the park and destroy us for pace, they have pace throughout there whole squad and seem so balanced!

Pace is absolutely crucial to be successful in todays game. Villa have bags of it. We have the square root of f all of it.
As walcott shows, football is easy if you have pace!

Lambert has done an outstanding job. Most those guys won't have even peeked in 5 years. In 5 years most of our squad will have either retired or be playing in the lower leagues. That aside it could be said that they could make a profit on almost the entirety of their squad, something that can't be said of ours.

I don't think they'll finish top 6. We have a better backline, Lowton would probably get in at right back though and I'd say and N'Zonzi would get in their side too imo. The real difference is Weimann, Agbonlahor and Benteke. Weimann is a seriously good footballer, Agbonlahor can stretch the play and create gaps for Weiman to play in. And Benteke can do the same or exploit the gaps himself and use his power to boot. That's why I want a new front 3, without it we might as well not bother.

Its obvious that we are following a similar model.
Hope you can be patient, because Villa struggled last season doing it that way, looks like we maybe in for a similar, bumpy ride.

Pretty much the same thoughts as myself! I'm quite impressed with the speed it's all happened at, a lot of praise has to go to lambert. We need a lift now! I have no idea who our targets are, apart from diouf! I'm starting to be concerned not because of how little we've done but more because of what out main competitors have, they have all genuinely strengthened well.

They have IMO the best young(ish) manager out there and he's assembled an exciting young squad. He's done this without breaking the bank and in a short timeframe - though I'm sure he (and every Villa fan) shat themselves at times last year! Although it won't be plain sailing, their future is bright. They've got a start on us in terms of recruiting promising/accomplished young players, and playing them - to give them experience. If Leslie could emulate them (and retain some Stokie steel) I'd be a very happy man!

Villa relied exclusively in youth last season with potential value in the market- we are relying largely on older players past their best with no resale value. Villa relied on a front 3 with pace, flair, creativity and goals- we are relying on a 33 year old 6 ft 7 striker who moves at the speed of a snail and two wide forwards in Etherington and Walters who have no pace, can't score and create fuck all. Sorry for not seeing the similarities between us and the Villa of last season.

All I can say is if that's the case we have at least 3 new signings to make this summer to even resemble anything close to what Villa had last season. Those 3 need to be quick, young, creative and competent in front of goal. I certainly wouldn't say it's "clear" at this stage in the summer that we are going for an almost exclusively youthful starting xi. But hey.

Villa also have an excellent and we're trying our damnedest to improve that too. I think it's blatantly clear the way in which Coates wants us to head, implementing it will be and is difficult but that's life. Our problem is we're finding it hard to clear the decks of the older ones who don't fit that mould but again we know why that is.

We are talking about this season compared with the Villa of last. On the pitch we resemble nothing close to Villa. In fact you couldn't get two more dissimilar teams in terms of personnel. Slow, old, lacking in goals and creativity vs youthful, quick, creative and full of goals. Bit of a contrast.

This is what I'm saying! There's still practically two weeks left in the window to do that so stop werriting and just hope we get the players in that I think Hughes wants. Ie the same we both want! We have a good core of youngish players down the spine of the team (Bego, Shawcross and N'Zonzi), Hughes has to build around them and I think he will and potentially it's a better way of doing it than Villa because how green their players were. I'm going bed!

I think we would struggle against them and believe they would play us off the park and destroy us for pace, they have pace throughout there whole squad and seem so balanced! It's a good question. And yes, they are starting to click. I was speaking to a few Villa fans last weekend and they seem very relaxed about their side under Lambert. Obviously, it's way to early to say for sure but I think they could be this seasons surprise package. 7th or 8th would be my guess, maybe even snatching 6th spot. Unfortunately, I think we will probably be looking at a season which is much more comparable to Villa's last one. I have a strong suspicion that this first 3 to 4 months will certainly test the entire club (players, management, support) to the absolute limit but it's a process that we simply have to go through. Fulham were the same when MH went there - poor up to Christmas then they really got into the groove for the last 4 months of the season, playing some nice stuff as well. Let's hope MH's learned something from that experience to fastrack us to the promised land.

Over to you Les.... true, but they had some real brown trouser moments and only just got it together with 5 games to go, just hope we get 2 or 3 in to strengthen the first 11 to give us a chance, with our squad as it is we could be in a real battle for survival, would only take a couple of long term injuries and a couple of suspension (always possible with Huth and Zonz)and we are right up shit creek. normally I'm a glass half full kind a person, but my ring is really starting to twitch.

I think Benteke is not getting the proper amount of credit. Without him, villa and Stoke are pretty similar. Benteke will prove to be one of the best 5 strikers in the prem for the next 6-7 years. He's a special talent.

At least they built a new squad last season , we seem to have done nothing so far but I will wait til 2nd Sept Lambert and his staff coached that young Villa side brilliantly. I really thought they were goners but he made it work, especially when you think he did it without using Bent - I don't think Hughes would get away with that type of, what to everyman and his dog appeared to be a crazy scenario, here at Stoke. So, although the detail of the situation at Villa and Stoke are different, there are some broad parallels that can be drawn. I see McLeish and Pulis as similar beasts and although Hughes is probably not as radical as Lambert, both are on a mission to change their respective club's footballing and financial ethos. Lambert is now 12 months into the process and it's looking like it's about to pay off. As a club, we simply have to give Mark at least one season's grace. But reading this board and being in the concourse last season, i'm of the opinion that as a group of supporters we are actually more like a group of survivors, yet we still have to turn another sharp corner. Footballing matters aside, the clear discontent in our frankly rattled and weary support is potentially the biggest problem that the club will face in the 2013/14 season. Because of this (and Geoff123 aside) i'm not sure that as a group that we've actually got the collective minerals and the necessary patience to allow the new direction time to bed in and hopefully bear fruit, if things go tits up for us early on as they did for Villa last season. We must take something from that particular lesson at Villa last season. I really hope that i'm completely wrong by the way, but I fear it could be our undoing. The requirement for our home support to buy fully into the Club's long term objectives is essential throughout the entire campaign and I really don't like the clanking and grumbling coming off this board already. And i'm not having a go at the Oatie either, it's the actual sound of our support when we aren't singing Delilah at The Brit.

Hope you can be patient, because Villa struggled last season doing it that way, looks like we maybe in for a similar, bumpy ride. Cannot agree with this more. Villas position now is down to persisting with it last year, even when it would have looked more acceptable to throw the likes of Bent on instead of going out on a limb with the team he did.

Stoke have nothing in common with Villa of last year, but they have a lot in common with Villa of 2 years ago. Hutton, Warnock, Heskey, Ireland, Dunne, Given, Bent, Collins. slow aging players who felt that their right to walk into the team shouldn't be questioned and equally the manager never bothered looking for, or developing any competition for those players positions. Lambert took a huge gamble, but as the end of the season approached the fans could see things begin to develop and the young players got the full backing of the fans. It's looking to have paid off, but we're only 2 games in. If there's one team I could see mirroring what we did it's stoke but it's going to be a rollercoaster ride and it starts telling the big name, big earners, that they're not wanted and they can spend their time in the bomb squad or have their agents find them new clubs

At least they built a new squad last season , we seem to have done nothing so far but I will wait til 2nd Sept I think this is a fair point. Even with Bent on their books, who had cost them £20 odd million or something stupid the year before and who would have been on ridiculous wages, Lambert was still able to go out and spend £8 million on Benteke, without having to sell Bent first. I think a lot of Stokies will feel a whole lot more comfortable, once Mark Hughes is seen to have been backed in a similar fashion to Lambert.
