So, new season, new name in the frame... For me today was a balance of encouraging and not so encouraging. Was good for a Stoke side to be not just pushing forward but playing it forward away from home. Obviously we're not past masters at that yet and it showed but like I say it's encouraging. On the flip side, despite the late pen miss tbh the scoreline flattered us, we got no real penetration from the wings and (yet again) thank the lord for Bego. This could turn out to be a long hard season.
7 from me to be encouraging, I hovered between 7 and 6.

7 Although..... I'd have started with Adam instead of Wilson and played Nzonzi in front of the back four.

6. Bego masterclass kept us in it really. Was initially really disappointed with the team. Etherington, Walters and Whelan start while the likes of Adam and Pennant are on the bench was a poor decision. Etherington shouldn't be anywhere near the starting xi and Walters likewise if we are to seriously push on.
That said, I'm pleased with the philosophy. We tried to take the game to Liverpool at times and it was nice to see us keep the ball on the ground.
Get at least 2 quality forwards in and we can have a positive season imo. Crouch needs to be replaced with a more mobile striker too. Soon to be 33 and we need to cash in while we can (if at all possible).

I'd go 8 only two minor mistakes leaving Adam and pennant out but all round a good return 10 shots and 48 percent posession, altho if I was doing this based on 1st half alone it would have been a 6

However surely leaving your only 2 creative players on the bench isn't a recipe for success? Don't get me wrong its one game and i'm sure Hughes is looking to address our current woes in front of goal but I was pretty disappointed by the personnel within the starting xi. Adam and Pennant (at this point in time) should be the first two names on the teamsheet along with Bego.

7 Attacking bench and he brought on 3 attacking style players
He is trying to get the team to improve / develop their style of play and this was evident, especially as he set up in a familiar style for an away game More players were prepared to take a shot at goal too - we just need to create more chances and add a couple of proven strikers who can convert some of them

8 , made the subs refreshingly early (early enough to be effective ) , can't really argue with the starting line up although its hard to see Wilson being part of Hughes plans for long after that performance , it will be a while until mh knows his best team , Liverpool (today anyway ) were a class act , happy stokie here

5 poor team selection including crouch and Walters and not Adam . 7 for attacking subs and second half , 4 for first half defending

Refreshing to see us play football and have a real go away from home.
Would have preferred to see Pennant and Adam start and was hoping to see Jerome's pace test the cumbersome Toure.
A good base to build from assuming we get the players we all know we need.

7 very easily and i expect my score to rise following home performances. A neutral must've loved that game!
Deficiencies are there for all to see, but we have until a week on monday to correct them and a whole season to adapt. Overall, very impressed with the changes and nice to see players looking positive. A very transient stoke side this season but much needed.

7 - pleased with the more attacking football but not so much with Etherington / Crouch / Walters as the attackers but I think he'll go with Pennant and Adam at home against Palace and eventually replace Crouch with a new striker.

Today was like what I hoped Stoke being in the Premiership would be. Of course, we're not on Liverpool's level yet. Their bubbly front line would've overwhelmed us were it not for Begovic, especially in the first half. But we earned chances of our own, zipped the ball around on the floor really nicely at times and could easily have nicked a point with a bit more luck.
Under Hughes, this squad would walk the Championship, so you've got to assume we can give the Premiership a real punch this year. The newly promoted teams are all far far weaker in terms of personnel, whilst the sophomores have lost the element of surprise and now have to raise their game to turn over teams who know what to expect. We have a cracking squad with money yet to be spent up front, and a new style which our opponents will be ill-prepared for.
The final point to make is to say I enjoyed every minute of today. For the first time, we looked like genuinely like one of the top teams in the country, not just a bunch of pretenders who were exploiting a limited tactical hack. It's going to be a cracker of a season. Up the Potters!

Just respect he has shown to our club , our players and the supporters. Dont know that you can put a number on it. Hughes and his team seem up for the cause. cant ask much more can we. He seems to want the job long term,im looking forward to the journey. win .lose or draw.

7 - pleased with the more attacking football but not so much with Etherington / Crouch / Walters as the attackers but I think he'll go with Pennant and Adam at home against Palace and eventually replace Crouch with a new striker. I said something similar about how he'll approach different games, Gareth old boy. With Tone you knew that the team selected on the Saturday would be the same next week and the next week ad infinitum. I suspect Hughes will have a fairly settled side but be a bit more "horses for courses".

7*
I went and I didn't go away last year.
We were positive and played some very good football at times.
I don't for a moment think its all sorted but there were some encouraging signs.
Bego was incredible, Shawcross immense and despite what some people have posted elsewhere, other than the first five minutes of the second half, Nzonzi was fantastic. If he leaves without a suitable replacement, we are buggered!
There really is no excuse for Walters still to be taking penalties but that is more a problem created by the old regime. Hughes might now have an excuse to intervene.
We could have lost by more but we could also have drawn the game.
My only worry is that we started with Crouch (Unbelievably poor), Etherington (likewise, although there are some on here who would give him 9 for just turning up) and Walters, who were three of the main reasons for our early horrific 2013 form.
The sorry fact, although some will never accept it, is that the huge limitations in our forward three meant that we were destined for failure.
I am astonished to be reading threads dedicated to Wilson and Whelan's shortcomings when, although I don't agree with the personal abuse of Stoke City players, there were many more worthy candidates for such comments.
If we resolve those difficulties over the next two weeks, we'll do well.
I dread to think what will happen if we don't!

Not sure why people are annoyed pennant didn't start. He didn't really do anything when he came on and you would never start 2 wingers away at anfield

A good base to build from assuming we get the players we all know we need. Much the same. The way we attempted to play was encouraging, we tried to move the ball in a much more composed purposeful manner. Old habits die hard and we still gave it away far too cheaply at times. Personnel also a major issue, we need pace in the front three and had none. Not a Jerome fan but he'd have played a major role for me given what we have to choose from at the moment. Still Kenny over Crouch for me every time if you're playing a focal point/target-man type forward. Surely Wilson would be a better right back than Cameron though ideally I'd prefer a specialist right back.

Would have been 7, but loses 1 for picking Walters and another 1 for letting him take the penalty
This idea that the players decide who takes penalties is just negligent. It is a very important role in the team and the management should be 'on it'
So 5
