I thought they said he hadn't been mentioned before..... "As SL&P and the Fortress told you on July 12th" And didn't they say then he was in the UK when he was actually on the radio in America? All that hype and then it's Juan Agudelo.

Definite anti climax.
A relatively unknown from the MLS. Are we purely scouting over there?

Wikipedia says one of the best young forwards in mls. Obviously I don't know what that amounts to but he could be a potential star. Then again he could be awful! Who knows

He's 20, has more upside than arguably and striker 21 or under in America and has been on a few teams which ended up being terrible situations, including being stuck behind Henry at 18 in NY. He's also had a few injuries and is injured right now but the start to this season was his best ever with 5 goals in 11 appearances, split between two teams in LA and Boston. Very technical player, large, can hold up and can go at players 1v1. Colombian and plays more like a Colombian than your typical American. But, he's a prospect.
From a few months ago.
When he was 18 two years ago.
By the way, he's best friends with Brek Shea.

I'm pretty sure he has played for Chivas and New England so far this year. If signed, he couldn't play could he? I think he could, and it goes back to the complications of MLS being "single entity". That takes a lot of time to delve into but MLS franchises are completely separate from each other like clubs in Europe are. Every move goes through MLS head quarters and they have the final say, and have approved and blocked deals. Just look at when Shea came here. FCD and Stoke agreed, then MLS came in and blocked the transfer until they got more money. FIFA looks at MLS more as one huge club or franchise. Don't ask me why. Add to that the MLS calender is different and when he was traded it was during last season for the PL.

Agudelo could be an effective striker off the bench. He just needs to find his form. His market value has been a problem for him in MLS. Whenever a young player has the obvious potential to play at a higher level than MLS he will often be moved from club to club. MLS clubs don't profit off transfers as much as clubs in the rest of the world because the league owns the player's contract. On top of that, the clubs must operate beneath a salary cap. Financially, it's hard to justify a player using up loads of salary cap space. Now factor in the Designated Player rule (enough rules for ya?)which allows clubs to buy players and pay them outside the cap. Juan will be out of contract next season and any MLS club interested would have to spend "DP" money to land him. Footballers like Agudelo struggle to find chemistry and form since none of the clubs want to be caught holding the proverbial bag. If I were guessing, he would need at least half a season to adjust and at least that long before you saw him dress.

Many of you liked Jozy Altidore. Agudelo is similar, loads of potential yet hasn't found a good situation Altidore was a year older when he finally moved to AZ, developed for two years and became a stud. Stoke would be potentially doing the same, getting a kid with loads of potential who just needs a good situation to develop in, and you could see an Altidore like improvement over the next two years.
Not PL ready IMO, but a clear PL talent who could be steal of s signing in a couple years, and he'd only be 22 at that point. Do think he could be a decent sub option at some point THIS season. Liverpool, Celtic and Stuttgart were extremely impressed with him over the last two winters when he trained with them and Celtic had an offer rejected last winter.
He's versatile too, can holdup as a lone center forward, can face goal and go 1v1 and can play on the wing. Very good touch, very good passer.

It's a shit rule anyway mind.

It's complicated enough understanding MLS as an American but explaining it to Stoke fans is even tougher. I do think however there isn't a young American in MLS that MLS has been worse for. He could improve by leaps and bounds in two years in a good situation. Is Stoke under Hughes that situation? Dunno. But it's better than any MLS club for me.
