The opening poster occupies a much rosier world than mine and I envy him/her.
Am I the only one whose first thought - when the fixtures come out - is "where and how on earth are we going to get 40 points?".

As Manchester City boss in 2008/9 he got 50 points, Stoke finished with 45 points.
As Fulham boss in 2010/11 he got 49 points, Stoke finished with 46 points.
These are past results, so have no real bearing on this season, but it shows how close the middle of the PL is.

I may be missing something - but how can you predict our finishing points total when we have no idea what additions or losses from the squad there will be by the time the squads are fixed for the season. Are we saying that who we sign or release has no effect on how many points we will get? If that is the case, why bother signing anyone at all? Lets just sell a few of the high earners for whatever we can get, safe in the knowledge that it won't make a blind bit of difference to our finishing position!

I'm sure there will be some more exciting signings to come but as things stand we are pretty much 'as you were' from last season except for perhaps Pieters rather than Wilson at left back which may or may not be an improvement.
I don't see Muniesa featuring much since where would he play? A third contender for the left back slot? He won't shift Huth and Shawcross I don't think so central defence is not an option.
And Pennant was available to us last season but we chose not to play him then sent him out on loan.
With other sides looking to spend the enhanced Premier League pound and to strengthen considerably I can only see the contest between the 14 Prem also-rans getting tighter and tighter with points at more of a premium than ever.
To that end my expectation is a desperately tight Premier League again and a Pulis'esque mid 40's total.

I'm just focusing on 40 points. That's the target from the start of the season. That would be remarkable for a club like Stoke. As soon as we reach that, we can push on. Anything more would be a bonus.
Oh, hold on. That era's ended...

THIS!!! and it's not just about new additions either...as yet we have absolutely no idea how Les is planning to set up or what style we're going to play so there is absolutely no way whatsoever we could have any clue how we'll do against any sides until we see that. we could play a completely different style and storm into the top ten or equally end up in the bottom 2 all year. it's as daft as people on here saying "We should go for x player because he suits our system" when in reality we have no bloody clue what our system is going to be from here on in.....some may not have noticed but we have a completely new regime now so we can't judge anything based no what we've done the last 5 years, the King is dead people!

I don't want to sound pessimistic. But i'd be happy with anything that guarantees safety (for this year at least) with some exciting football along the way. Then the season after when Sparky has had time to put together his own squad properly we'll hopefully push for top 10

I'd be well happy with 45-50 points! Let's hope by towards the end of the season, we aren't in a twitchy bum situation i.e scrambling for the 40 points that would secure us safety!
