Back on the 20 minute tempo tonight up and down Sir Stan's Way in the wind and heavy rain. 6:50s for the first two miles and 6:35 for the last. Immediate recovery on the breathing now so it's getting easier Back on the piss last night, enjoying a week off π Opposite for me I'm in serious training to blast a 10K out on the 13th.

How seriously should I take running gear?
I know trainers are vital (I got a new pair today) but what about socks, shorts, tops etc? Trainers aside, does the rest make much difference?
And if it does, what should I be looking for?
I did a 7.5k run today (my longest run to date, slowly building for my 1st 10k at Tatton Park on 2nd November) and it took me just under 40 minutes, so I'm really happy with that time.
The original goal was to break 1 hour for 10k, so I think I'm well on target to achieve that.

If the shorts are down to your knees and it's pissing down there might be some disadvantage. You will probably need a tight fitting long sleeve vest for the colder days ahead. Try TK Maxx they usually have a decent selection at cheap prices. Socks are trial and error but you need to get decent ones to prevent blisters preferably from a sports shop. The last ones I got were from Velo in Stone.

Never run in cotton and don't be afraid to Vaseline your balls and nips. Beat me to it by seconds Decathlon stuff is good and cheap - their own brand is called kalenji and it's no worse than Adidas stuff I've got. They do free delivery if you spend Β£30. More Mile stuff is also cheap and cheerful - they usually have it in TK Maxx and online at m and m direct. Real runners never wear shorts over running tights and race in shorts with a 2 inch thigh split π

I assumed that would be a good thing to run in, to avoid chafing.

Didn't feel any tougher than the tempos I've been doing recently, and all miles were consistent, I think it's just consistent training for once paying off!

There's some that I've seen dress themselves out in all the latest kit, then I saw a picture of the winner of Manchester Half Marathon in Karrimor(Sports Direct). Decathlon is a good shout, I found them particularly good for base layers in winter. I also like a website called ReRun Clothing if you like to reduce your environmental impact π only had shorts from there though.

I was more interested in if I should be paying attention to the materials of my shorts or t-shirts. And whether I should get proper running socks (I currently just wear normal ankle socks which are very thin) and what I should wear under my shorts to avoid chafing etc (I'm currently wearing a lycra longer length boxer short). I'm also new to outdoor running so I've only done it in summer. Do I need to get additional gear for autumn/winter running?

I'm a fan of the adage 'be bold, start cold' so generally don't wear loads more in winter, especially for faster runs. I usually just wear a long sleeve top instead of a t shirt. The problem with that comes if you have to stop, so I usually take a running backpack with waterproof jacket and trousers in for long runs - if you ever want to do a winter fell race this is standard gear anyway. Long socks are really good too and a pair of running gloves helps. Decathlon do a trail pack with a water bladder for Β£18 and packable waterproofs can be had from sports direct for about Β£15 each for jacket and trousers. The thing I always take in winter is my phone so I can always call for a lift in the worst case.

Sorry for all the questions. What should I be eating before a big run, and how long before? A bit of porridge or bagel with peanut butter, couple of hours before, then about 30 mins before a bit of banana and a few nuts ?

Sorry for all the questions. What should I be eating before a big run, and how long before? Last week example for me at Barnstaple marathon. Event started at 9.30, but for me Im usually up & about 5am no sweat. Porridge, a banana & fluids. The usual fluids guide is your wee should be the colour of straw on race day. Night before any race for me is always pasta (will be tonight prior to Cardiff tomorrow) Carb loading yes, but its never done me any harm. Again I have been so far & will ensure I drink plenty during day...that doesn't mean large quantities of Marstons either

Sorry for all the questions. What should I be eating before a big run, and how long before? I tend to have a nana 1 hour before a race and a small bar of dark chocolate 20 minutes before. It's good enough for Sir Mo: www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/eat-athlete-mo-farahI don't think you really have to eat much differently from any other time though really, unless you're doing longer than a half marathon. Just don't eat lots less than 2 hours before a run.

St Aidans Trail Half this morning. A fairly gentle trail, around two massive RSPB reserves east of Leeds (formerly opencast coal mines, now flooded) and along the river Aire for about 6 miles. Pretty muddy / bit of flooding for first 2 miles then ok. Organisers were worried that the rapidly rising level of the Aire might curtail it into an 8 miler instead, but everyone got round fine I think. Hats off to Eventsplits and RSPB for marshalling, and the 263 runners who turned out.

2:01 for Cardiff half today. A tad disappointed yes, but in all honesty went off too fast with a 51 min 10k.....and felt the marathon legs from last week kick in when heading around Roath. Only real downside is getting a notification whilst in traffic that a runner died today :-( It was warmer than planned, and did see enough people in distress

Official 1:45 pacer at Basingstoke half today. Finished in 1:44:57 - I think that's reasonable enough. Last year I was also 1:45 pacer and finished in 1:44:40, so not sure if I'm getting slower or better as I get older

Seems a high casualty rate for "only" a half marathon. Is it a particularly tough course?
