different views on the one hand (the eu gravy train aside) our MPs pay isnt quite big considering they are running the country. There are lowlier civil servants earning more and their private sector wages earning much more.
but some of their allowances are getting cut
10 per cent pay rise from the current £66,396 a year, accompanied by a “dramatic” cut in the final salary pension offered to MPs, one of the most generous available. A range of expenses, including the dinner allowance and lump sum payment to MPs leaving Parliament will also be scrapped or cut.
Pay will then rise in line with average earnings
The cost raise will be neutral
MPs are currently paid £66,396, but that is due to rise to £67,060 in April 2014 and rise by a further 1% the following year.
The recommendation amounts to a rise of around £6,300 a year, or 9.3%, on what MPs would be getting in 2015.
The Ipsa proposals include:
A salary of £74,000 in 2015, with rises after that linked to average earnings across the whole economy A new pension on a par with other parts of the public sector, moving from a final-salary to career-average scheme, which Ipsa says will save taxpayers nearly £2.5m a year Scrapping "resettlement payments", which were worth up to £64,766 for long-serving MPs still of a working age, the first £30,000 of which was tax-free. and introducing "more modest" redundancy packages, available only to those who contest their seat and lose A "tighter regime" of business costs and expenses - including an end to the £15-a-night meal allowance and taxis home after late sittings Ipsa chairman Sir Ian Kennedy said: "The history of MPs' pay and pensions is a catalogue of fixes, fudges and failures to act. The package we put forward today represents the end of the era of MPs' remuneration being settled by MPs themselves.
"For the first time, an independent body will decide what MPs should receive. We will do so in full view, and after consultation with the public."

Personally I want the MPs to be well rewarded.
The role of representing us shouldn't just be left to the well off who can afford to risk being out of work every 5 years and may or may not be able to return to their career.
Do you really want our representatives either to be - just the really wealthy (think Cameron, Osbourne, rest of the cabinet), or spending too much time trying to find alternative income (think expenses and cash for questions scandals).
I want the people at the top level - the people who look after our interests and decide where our country goes - to be top quality and hence they need to be well rewarded.

It isnt just the rich and wealthy though. Its anyone over the age of 18 who is eligable to stand. The problem is the political parties who think that rich and wealthy is best. No one else gets a chance because the newspapers and TV can easily manipulate people as to their voting habits. The role of allegedly representing us a privaledge not a job but unfortunately that is lost on political parties and even more on voters.

It has to be - else you will only get people who can afford to indulge themselves being MPs. You are right though. It's scary how many from a privileged background are in the House of Commons.

Let us see whether the recommendations are followed wholesale or whether hard-hitting parts are conveniently postponed for further perusal.
By the way, are we all still in this together?

The pay isn't the problem it's all the 'fiddles' that make them rich.

The pay isn't the problem it's all the 'fiddles' that make them rich. I think the 'fiddles' were effectively seen as a semi-official way to boost their pay at it was viewed as unpalatable to give MPs a proper pay rise.

According to George Galloway they aren't worth it, and he says the numbers of MPs should be cut to 200 ( from 600) at most, as most of our laws are now made in Brussels.

George galloway isnt worth the shit crust off my underpants. He is a disgusting little racist, rape sympathiser who only got elected by sucking up to the mosques and muslim elders (as respect only stand in areas they can do that) who then told the rest of their communities who to vote for. Then when he squirms his way into a seat he totally neglects the people and area he is supposed to represent and spends all his time bleating on about the middle east and Palestine and organising pointless marches against shit that has nothing to do with Bradford. Apart from a small number of extremists and lefty dogooding wankbuckets, nobody wants him in they city anymore, including normal muslims who can see that he is just using them to further his own agenda. Fuck george galloway. Fuck him right in his ear.

And that was before he chose to go into the Big Brother house rather than represent the people who voted for him in Parliament.

I actually think they should hike MPs pay right up. Its not enough to make it an attractive career choice for the best people, and as a result ends up being full of blinkered rich kids born and raised in cotton wool.
Same with most of the public sector. Bring pay in line with the private sector and cut the numbers employed and you'll soon see performance improvements.
