How is it wrong? Are you saying the Coates family are neglecting us because we've only signed two players by early July? That Hughes should know exactly what we need before he's even worked with our players because he managed teams against us years ago when we had different players in a different system? He was manager of Q.P.R. last year when they played us twice! He knows our players and he knows our system. One would hope if he's going to alter our play then he should know the types of players he will need to make that adjustment? It isn't true that he managed teams against us years ago. Given that overtures were made to him months before TP was sacked it didn't come as a surprise to him that he would be our manager? Don't you think he was doing his assessments months ago? Do we know for a fact that overtures were made months ago? I'd be astonished if they were. You can't base your ideas on what a squad does and doesn't need based on one game he managed against us last season.

So, having seen our players play in a Pulis system, he is now completely aware of how they would play in a totally different system, is he? Please get it through your thick skull that it isn't 'our system' anymore, so until Les sees how the players cope with his system, he's as wise as you are, i.e., not very!

Sidlittle's post is perfectly easy to understand! It's just wrong! How is it wrong? Are you saying the Coates family are neglecting us because we've only signed two players by early July? That Hughes should know exactly what we need before he's even worked with our players because he managed teams against us years ago when we had different players in a different system? Exactly! He may see Culvier and Ness as first team players where Pulis didn't,from what i can see Hughes thinks that the nucleolus of the squad is fine just needs fine tuning and organized slightly differently.

Does Palacios get to eat the scotch egg as a loyalty bonus? I assume he would whether he's allowed to or not. Might be worth tempting Steve Bruce with a George Graham style bung, and slipping him 15 percent of the scotch egg in a brown envelope.

Makes sense imo. There are so many players who could be given a central midfield place that he'd need to have a look at them, not just for how they are themselves but how they could work in combination - for all we know Wilson and Cuvelier could work together like a well oiled machine, or Adam and Cameron, or etc.. He needs to see how theyd work as part of his team as well as how they are as players.
Impressed with how we're going about our business so far.

Its not gard to get your heads around surely?
He is obviously going to say he's assessing the squad to get more out of them in training.
The alternative is, 'Well our only quick striker isn't good enough, so all 4 of them can stay at home. Etherington's past it now and this Shea looks like a nutter; I don't care if they stay behind at training for 2 hours every day and they still wouldn't get into my team. Kightly dribbles off the pitch with the ball every time, if I was his agent I'd get whoring him around sharpish if he doesn't fancy a loan to the Championship.'
Or piss off our idiot fans with the comment
'Shotton is a very good right back, I won't bother trying to sign people in that position'.

Back to English school for you to find ways around double negatives that confuse the heck out of us simple souls It's not the first time I've been accused of being too negative I think you might be right about going back to English school though to see if I can improve on my E grade To be honest I started confusing the fuck out of myself in this thread not knowing who was in agreement or who wasn't at one point! Suppose I should be concentrating on my work a bit more instead of getting involved on here

I have to say I am finding it rather amusing that many on here are pinning their faith on Les Hughes working some miracles with his 'new system', whatever that might be. So he's set to transform Ness into a Prem player, Wilson and Cameron into solid reliable central midfield dynamos, Palacios from an unfit uninterested hasbeen back to what he was 5 years ago, Adam rejuvenated into a midfield maestro pulling all the strings in midfield.Of course there is a new contrite Pennant staying squeaky clean and turning back the clock 2 years,Cuvelier morphing into a prem midfielder from someone who wasn't able to even attract any championship clubs for a loan move. Les is going to achieve all this while teaching Whelan how to pass accurately over a distance of more than 10yds, Jerome and Walters how to have some composure in front of goal and become instinctive goalscorers....must be some system he has. The reality is that Hughes has inherited a bit of a dogs breakfast of an unbalanced squad which needs some major surgery in our attacking options with a number of players being moved on and off the payroll and replaced with better quality. How many training sessions will he need to work this out and can he work the real miracle and that's shifting the deadwood?

How many training sessions will he need to work this out and can he work the real miracle and that's shifting the deadwood? i think you've completely missed the point of the "New system" to be honest....the point people are trying to make is that Hughes won't be setting us up to be just a collective of big, hard, physical hoofers and long ballers hoping to nick one at a set piece then defend for your lives for the remainder of the game as we have been for years now but without him seeing the squad we currently have, he has no idea how many of the players on our books are able to play any other way. if he is simply to judge our players based on what he's seen one game from the touchlines last year and snippets on MOTD then he may as well get rid of Huth (who is seen by a lot of neutrals as simply a big thug) Shawcross (who if judged by what he did under Pulis is obviously someone who doesn't know how to do anything but foul and twat it 40 yards up the pitch) and Wilson (who obviously dissolves and disintegrates the minute he steps over the halfway line). the problem is simply that all of our players played under possibly THE most rigid and inflexible system for the most rigid and inflexible manager ever seen in the Premiership probably since it's beginnings. it is this that Hughes has come into and therefore he HAS to properly assess the players so he can see what they ARE capable of when playing football not just what they've been capable of when playing Pulisball. it's not a case of turning shit players into world beaters, it's simply seeing how good these players are when they're allowed to actually play which they never really have been!!! Adam has never really been used properly, Wilson wasn't allowed to play with ANY attacking intent, jesus even Bego wasn't allowed to do anything other than hoof it up to Crouch without getting bellowed at by Pulis for God's sake. playing Pulisball for 5 years (and don't get me wrong, i have no problem with that, it's served us bloody well and i love the man for it!) is NOT a good indication of how good a footballer someone actually is!!! just because some of the players aren't first team quality we should just ship them out should we? i was under the impression we need a 25 man squad so some of those mentioned may NOT be good enough for the first 11 but could be used as backup for injuries/suspensions...unless of course you're implying that Hughes should just ship out about half the squad and buy in 12 players or so to replace them? how much money do you think Coates is willing to spend exactly? a reality check and a trip to a place called "The real world" may be in order for you i think mate

He is also probably not trying to piss of the entire squad. By seeing them train first he can at least say that he gave everyone an opportunity to make an impression. We have a tight team of players, so if he is seen to be forking people off without giving them a chance, he could lose the team very quickly.
I imagine he may be building on mistakes made at QPR.
(also, I can imagine he has heard horror stories of the old drill sergeants approach to training and players....so may want to see if there is anything "salvageable" (pennant esque).....good management really if that is what is happening)

plus, if he turned around and basically said "We need at least 8 or 9 players in because our current crop are shit so we're crying out for new signings" (or words to that effect) then you basically push up the price of every player we're interested in as their agents know how desperate we are

I think Mark Hughes realises Stoke are in a good place, ie pretty consistent league positions and no disruptive club ownership change. This means that, although they certainly can improve with better players, it is a team not in desperate need of rebuilding. I would certainly believe that Mark Hughes has been given the job with a view to improving its stature over a number of years, not just now.
This gives the club a chance to slowly develop and alter its methods over time, Hughes must know as well as anybody that a massive overhaul (qpr and man city) does not necessarily dictate a positive change.

We have a number of players that MH needs to see for himself in what he considers to be their most effective role.
TP's blinkers meant a good number of our lads have still yet to be seen doing what they do best.
Cameron, Wilson, Adam to name but a few...

The players he has already brought in were easy additions. We have no real LB and need LB and CB cover so Pieters and Muniesa won't ruffle any feathers.
I think there will be quite a few leaving during the window, on top of those who've already gone, and I can see 2 or 3 more coming in. Hopefully a striker and RW for me. Center midfield alone could do with a cull of up to 4.
I've been impressed with how he's handled things so far. LMH is certainly saying all the right things as far as I'm concerned. I just hope he's learned from his QPR mistakes and the execution matches up to the talk.

Sid, that will teach you for using double negatives !!! "I dont get how people cant understand ...." Back to English school for you to find ways around double negatives that confuse the heck out of us simple souls That isn't a double negative. Or at least it says what the writer wanted to say so it is correct Emglish. The two negatives relate to different subjects. i.e. the writer "doesn't get" and the people he is talking about "don't understand". So Sid was correct to use the words he did. A proper double negative is when the speaker or writer does not actually say what he wants to say because of a double negative which reverses the intended meaning. Think Mick Jagger for a famous double negative. "I can't get no satisfaction" is a double negative. Correct English would be either "I can get no satisfaction" or "I can't get any satisfaction" both alternatives are grammatically correct. However, I'll be the first to admit that the song would be crap if he had sung "I can't get any satisfaction" I was in a Union meeting once when the chairman put something to the vote with the words "all those in favour of opposing the motion, put your hands up" - they had to have a re run of the vote when half the people in the room could not work out whether to stick their hands up or not.

Ok,the post that I quoted was full of shit and what Hughes has said is exactly what I would expect. Any fan who expects him to go out signing shit loads of players before assessing his squad in training and in friendlies is a full bore cock ring who knows fuck all about football. Hope that clears it up for everyone What's better? Assessing players in friendlies against a bunch of Yanks or having made your assessments in competitive, premierleague matches? I know which of the two would give me the best idea about the players I was now manager of? So you think that he should already know about the ability level of all our players because he has setup a team against us a couple of times months ago, riiiiight.

Certainly does not sound like wholesale changes that some hoped for:-
Meanwhile, Geoff Cameron has returned from extended leave following commitments with the United States.
"The early impression of Geoff is the same as with the other lads," said Bowen, "in that we have been surprised, if that is the right word, with their qualities and application."

In an ideal world:- - at least 1 new striker - winger - attacking cm - rb That's about right however well need to get rid of one from each of thos positions to free up space. For me I'd try to sell STR - Crouch WINGER - Matty CM - Edu, Whelan and loan Ness RB - Wilko though for me I'd be happy with Wilko and Shotts as our options

I think we have two spare places at the mo?
Assuming Butland, Cuvelier and Muniesa. are all covered by no need to register?
So assuming Sparky is happy with a full quota we would only need to move two out to get the 'ideal world' of 4 new signings
No idea who mind as the whole thing feels up in the air - will Ness live up to his Glasgow hype for example? Will Nzonzi stay, Will Palacios etc etc
