Wilson has been the player of the season 2012/13, as LB. The last position we needed players at. If we're assuming that Wilson is going to continue playing as a LB. Still, we had no decent cover. Personally, I consider the midfield to be the main area of improvement (including CM) which should really be the case considering the number of CMs we've brought into the club.

Forwards are what we need - 3 of them.

I want to make them happy.” With us just spending a few million on Pieters you'd imagine he won't be starting at LB so it's going to be at the expense of one of Ryan or Huth at centre half (which isn't what we want), so I'm hoping he slots into a defensive midfield role. Either that or it has to be bench for me, and he'll have to take his chance when he gets it. Although I can't see him coming here to sit on the bench? If we change to a midfield 3 he could be a holding part of that set-up. That would also allow us to utilise Adam in his best position. Who knows? Exciting signing though.

Why does buying a young CB mean that we're going to lose either Ryan or Huth? He is there to provide competition for them, to step up when injuries and bans happen plus play in the cup games.
We have needed quality indepth in the squad for a while

Could this be the end of the Shawcross - Huth partnership?. We know they were always first on TP's team sheet but maybe Hughes want's to play one of them along side a ball playing CB. It will be interesting to see what teams he tries out in Preseason
However i think He'll need to bulk up a bit if he wants to play CB in the premier league

We have needed quality indepth in the squad for a while It doesn't mean we are going to lose either of them. The problem is, centre halves are a position you tend to benefit from not changing. It isn't the same as swapping wingers up, forwards or attacking players in general. Stability at the back is always a good thing. Obviously you need opitions there too, and if Ryan or Huth pick up a bad injury in September then we'll be thanking our lucky stars we have cover. If they have another strong, injury free season then any cover for that position will be looking at a handful of games, covering when suspensions kick in, league cup games etc. And you'd imagine he wouldn't be happy with that.

I thought the idea was to have 2 quality players for each position to encourage competition for places, have cover for injuries and suspensions and to enable a squad to compete in all trophies?
Considering his pedigree perhaps Muniesa may be technically equipped to also play the wide midfield role as well ahead of what sadly appears to be a waning Etherington?
And we now have Wilson to compete for a holding midfield role.
It's called a balanced squad.

Is it wrong and old-fashioned to feel that a 5' 10" isn't the way to go in the Prem?
Can't see Hughes going down that route.
Are there any other sub-6ft CBs knocking around?

Ashley Williams at Swansea is just 6', but it is a sad indictment on the English game (IMO) that you need to be big to play in a certain position. There should be a fine art to defending that is more than just hustle and bustle but sadly that has been lost over the years in this country. Des Walker was 5'11. What a defender.

Time will tell I suppose. Perhaps Hughes has plans to adapt his team dependent on who we are playing? The likes of Shawcross against the Carroll's of this world and Muniesa against the nippier types?

Maybe it's too much TP but I just think he'll start off in midfield for us, based on nothing but cynicism and my gut.

The ability to read the game, anticipate a move and tackle fair but firm seem to be second place to being tall and heading the fucker.
I don't think the Premier League needs tall defenders as much as we think, there are very few big strong forwards about these days, 1 would be enough for most teams.

Or maybe with the emphasis nowadays on one up front with a number 10 in behind( and less and less a flat 4-4-2), maybe the plan is to move away from two big hulks in favour of one with a smaller, sweeper type alongside?

His master, Puyol, is only 5'10. To be unless we play a Pulis team in the future I can't see it being a problem, it's not as though either Shawcross/Huth is going to struggle to bail him out.

Whatever way you look at it, it has to be a good signing. We're in most need of cover at left back and centre back, which he can provide. He can fill in in midfield and possibly at right back. Presumably all of that means that he'll get plenty of game time here and there. That is, of course, assuming we can keep him injury free and he's as good as his pedigree and reviews suggest.
I don't like the thought of him at centre back in this league though, he's just too small. The only other centre back of that height in this league is diving cheat and all round pansy Vermaelen. I suppose Puyol isn't the tallest, but he's an exceptional case. Having a big gaping hole like that at the back for the sake of having a 'ball playing' centre back is sheer folly.

One for the future I reckon.
Unless a surprise departure is in the pipeline.

Huth, Shawx and Muniesa at the back, and a 3-5-2, with Pieters and A. N. Other at wing backs maybe?

I thought he could have the speed S & H were lacking. I hope both him and Pieters have some pace about them as across the board our team is woefully short on speed.
