Hodges storyLooks like he's re-joined Team Hughes. He's another that follows him around everywhere, isn't he? U-21 boss replacing Kevan?

One of the biggest problem with English football is the over reliance on 'past' footballers, as if they know so much about the game they can teach it.
Continental philosophy puts far more belief in those who study football from an academic point of view, learn the game inside out, and then work their way up gaining experience on top of their understanding.
The fact that Hughes' team is a who's who list of 'Hughes' ex-team mates and pals is a bit of a concern for me.

Looks like he will have some Academy/u-21 role, based on his previous roles. Man CityI`m delighted to welcome Glyn here. He has a great pedigree, has been a manager himself and did a great job at Blackburn. He will be a good link for the guys coming from the Academy and them being well prepared enough to join the first team. He is great in that role and will bring a lot to us. Glyn is a pro licensed coach, as all my senior coaching staff are and that is important, because it means the players are getting the right quality of work. He will be a great asset for us.'
Have we got a fitness coach in yet? His fitness coach of choice seems to be a bloke called Damian Roden? Physical preparation/injury prevention does seem to be an area where the old Pulis fitness team really excelled? Injury prevention league table

Can also understand why any manager would want his staff to be people he feels he can rely on to carry out delegated tasks - being an ex-player or an academically informed coach guarantees nothing - plenty of successes and failures of both kinds litter the English game

Didn't Holland or a Dutch club have Dennis Bergcamp as Academy/youth director?!?!

What happens when Hughes gets another job in a couple of years time? More upheaval across the board in the coaching staff?
It's one thing saying "Get used to it, having a manager that other clubs want is normal" but another thing saying it's okay when they all up sticks and follow him on again.
Especially when we're talking about the youth side of things. We need serious continuity at that level if we are to produce long term.

Injury prevention league tableThe sacking of Maxwell seemed absolutely backwards to me, given our injury record. We even had Michael Owen fit enough to sit on the bench for most of last season! I'm surprised that Cruickshank is here now. Isn't his job done by Cartwright?

Yeah it does seem a bit daft given how well he's seemingly done. Maybe there's more to it? I know for a fact that Plymouth messageboard Pasoti weren't allowed to talk about him without the lawyers butting in after he left. I had to get the low down on him on there via PM! Now I'm not suggesting he did anything wrong here, it's just idle tittle tattle!

I can kind of see why Hughes has bought Hodges in. Hughes will want to work a certain way and therefore he will want people around him to allow to do this as easy as possible. In terms of the fact that he is an ex pro is probably not as a big a problem as it used to be given the need to be qualified to a certain level these days to coach. I can also see that him having some sort of role in the U-21s as being quite beneficial. However I think the appointments of coaches/ administrators at levels below U-21 need to be left to the club in general. My thought process is that if the academy below U-21s have non Hughes appointed personnel then hopefully the turnover of staff would be reasonable and would leave us at less risk of a mass exodus if Hughes was sacked. However at U-21 level you probably do need a Hughes appointment to act as a threshold/ integration into the 1st team squad.
