Trouserdog,so we have two centre halves who have served us very well and therefore we do not look to see if they can be improved upon?
I would love to live in your perfect world where neither of them gets any older or is injured or is ever suspended.
I know we need improvement more urgently in other areas, but if the right player at the right age comes along and at the right price and is a centre half who can improve that position straight way or maybe in the next season,we ignore him, just to keep Shawcross and Huth together?

And we cannot simply just look at the first XI and not look at the squad as a whole.
I for one do not want to trust Shotton or Wilkinson at centre half and I have no idea if Cameron is good enough to be a Premier League centre half.
Wilson is more capable but is he a long term answer if either of the current two first choices leave or have a major injury?

It seems that the level of our expectations under Pulis affected our judgement of playing standards. Under Pulis's regime he hailed Huth and Shawcross as his warriors and his stars but they actually are very limited. They're brave, good in the air, physically committed and determined but as soon as the space is opened up around them then you begin to see that they make decision errors. Hopefully Hughes is going to have a more offensive team and it is certainly wrong to assume that Huth and Shawcross are going to be the answer. I would actually accept any good offer that came in for Huth.

If we'd got a bottomless pit of money then I'd agree with you. However, we haven't. So the money we'd be spending to 'improve' on Huth- and we're not talking peanuts here are we?- is needed elsewhere. It's about prioritising and not making the mistake of creating an unbalanced squad where we have loads of quality in one position and a pile of shit in others. Injuries and suspensions occur, of course they do...i'm not stupid. However, as stated we have Cameron as a back-up and I'd be happier if we signed another cheap option as well to step in now-and-again. It's folly for us to be splashing out big bucks on a top-class centre back just to sit on the bench all season - it's a complete waste and no other club of our size has the luxury of three big-name CBs in their squad. I think we can plan for them getting older. Time does go quickly, but I think we can say that neither Ryan or Huth are going to age three years in the next few months.

Well, maybe its because he intends on playing Pieters at LEFT BACK and any manager worth their salt would have two players for every first 11 slot. Not rocket science is it Einstein. SGS

My thoughts being if we needed to shuffle for injuries Wilson could still cover left back? So what would you do if both Pieters and Shawcross got injured? Er that would be Wilson for Pieters and Cameron for Shawcross?

What's to say that without 7 men defending in front of them,Huth and Shawcross won't look as good a centre half pairing next season? I'm not saying that it will happen but it is a possibility if they are more exposed during games?

I can't wait then until we sign a proper right back and a couple more wingers to cover Ethers n Pennant! St Peter will need deeper pockets!

It would be nice to have AT LEAST one centre back who is capable of pushing Ryan and Huth for a first team spot and I'm sure there's plenty out there.
Having players who can just "do a job when needed" is not good for competition and not the way forward, imho.

No matter what position if good players become available then you should be going for them. Ideally I'd have a minimum of two players per position.

A winger, Hoillet, Redmond or moses(loan) or sinclair(loan)should be the priority along with A striker. However, a proper CB as cover would be ok when we have covered other areas. Cameron, Ryan, Huth, Pieters and even Wilson can play CB but i think Pieters should be LB unless he's injured then we can bring Wilson to LB. Cameron and even Wilson at desperate times can fill in at RB if needed but i think wilson and cameron should be CM players next season.
