Why is it that the majority of football commentators always pronounce Brazilian names ending in "O" as if it ends in "IO" for example Paulino as Paulinio or Jairzino as Jairzinio or Ronaldino as Ronaldinio. Just wondered cus it irritates the sh** out of me !

I learnt some portuguese when in brazil a couple of years back and its actually spelt 'Ronaldinho' with the 'nho' in Portuguese pronounced 'nyo' - hence English commentators will naturally pronounce it "nio"

Yes, the simple answer is that that's how they're pronounced. All names ending in -inho are diminutives. Ronaldinho's real name is Ronaldo, Paulinho is Paulo etc.

We don't really have the same thing in English but I guess adding -y to names is close, as in Johnny, Billy, Chrissy etc...

Proper Brazilian names... Fred, Jo, Bernard ,Hulk wtf pmsl It's not just like English though It's not Fred, Joe, Bernard. Instead of Bern-erd, it's pronounced Bern-ard. Weirdly, instead of Fred, it's pronounced Fre-deche, in Portuguese. And finally Jo is actually pronounced like 'how'. Sh-uaw

'Jo' should just be pronounced like the first part of Jose - something like 'Sho'. Another interesting one is the pronunciation of 'r' at the beginning of words - it's a sort of deep rasping 'h' sound. So Ronaldinho sounds more like 'Honaldinyo' in Portuguese.

They pronounce it correctly in their language - which is Portuguese oddly - not Brazilian!? I would not be at all surprised if the Czechs pronounced those names somewhat differently as well. We do live in a multi-lingual world after all!

We do live in a multi-lingual world after all! not odd that they speak Portuguese really given that there isn't a "Brazilian language" for them to use anyway. before taking on Portuguese there were over 200 hundred different languages used by indigenous tribes (who never saw themselves as "Brazilian" anyway, they were simply members of their own tribe)so they'd never had one generic language at any point beforehand anyway. you have to remember that our language wasn't one we came up with independently and just called "English", it's largely a mishmash and adaptation of several Germanic languages that we adopted when being invaded/conquered over the years

Gervinho's real name is Gervais. If I was a player i'd ask the kit man to put -inho on the end of everyone's names just for laughs
