Surely this club could help him out, with possibly a benefit match, scfc dont seem to want to be associated with arguably the best player they have ever had, he had to borrow money to get up here for the 150yh anniversary, come on stoke do something positive for him

Perhaps one idea would be for the shop to sell some kind of Hudson branded legend merchandise and donate a percentage of the profit to him.
Then again, they're not obliged to do so and I'd be surprised if anyone helped him out.
He raises some good points but then again life isn't fair and he had a better deal than most.

Would it not be too much to expect both Stoke and Chelsea to arrange a testimonial match pre season. Not only would it be a way of providing him with some cash so that he can at least have some respect back into his life, it would be a perfect way of showing our appreciation for one of the most talented players ever to wear a Stoke shirt. Ok so hes pissed most of it away but from a purely humanitarian aspect I think he deserves a little help. Just a thought.

Sorry you reap what you sow. Huddy yes was a Great player but he had more wedge than most people dream of plus his Compo and his book(s). Hope things pick up Huddy. How much did the Mirror pay for your article 30k maybe, well thats a start.

Like previous comments you could describe it as a mix of bad luck (the accident ) and self-imposition (the drinking, the bad business deals )
Best player I have ever seen anywhere but not sure where I stand on the "clubs should look after ex-players" thing.
Odd to me that he only has a go at Chelsea for not offering him anything, as he played a total of 145 games for them and - spookily - played 144 for us, so why not blame us as well ?
There again.........289 games, plus 36 for Arsenal, makes 325 in total - not a lot is it compared to so many other great players ?

Lets not kid ourselves here. If huddy was paid the same amount as todays players he'd be skint. And if stoke did organise an event for him the money wouldn't last long at all. Alan Hudson will always be Alan Hudson.

He gets £700 a month - if he moved north and spent less time in the pub that'd be enough to live on. There are plenty of people who live on much less. Does he still write a column for the Sentinel or anyone? He's had it tough and alcoholism is an illness too, but although I've never met the guy his ego and attitude doesn't seem to do him any favours.

No sympathy at all, he's pissed his money up against a wall.
Why should the PFA or Stoke support him, he's had more money than the average bloke , weak willed and and self centred guy.

We all know, and Huddy's acknowledged himself, his own part in his downfall. In the interests of compassion it would be good if SCFC could do something to help him. I don't know what exactly but surely there is some kind of way the club could support him. this would be great - all for it but i couldnt see my company doing that for me if i was in that position and i've worked for them for 33 yrs

it is a sad tale, his life has been blighted by alcohol and he was unlucky enough to be involved in a serious road acident which has effected both his physical condition and his mental health. however he is a stoke city legend and he shouldnt have to go begging for help. where are all his "mates" from when he was splashing his cash around? given the obscene amounts of money floating around in the prem league surely they could do more to help ex players who have fallen on hard times.personaly i think that clubs should build houses/flats within the club grounds to accomadate ex players who have fallen from grace maybe we can raise some money on the oatcake? i would be happy to contribute.

Only a few years ago he was whingeing about not being allowed to stay in his late mums house, he was recovering from being almost killed in a car accident all this hasn't stopped him pissing every penny he's ever had up the wall, there's only so much sympathy for someone who constantly looks help in the eye then tells it to fuck off! He's been given a roof over his head and £700 a month benefits and pension, all after blowing £150,000 compensation from his accident. He's already getting a lot more than some others get. I appreciate that he's viewed as many as one of the best players they've ever seen, but folk wouldn't bat an eyelid if he played for somebody else, or if he'd been a high earning CEO or banker who had similarly pissed away his money. Horrible story in that his wife left him after the accident but he's being given a number of provisions that others don't. He does seem to have some kinda beef against Chelsea for not helping him out but they (or Stoke) dont have any duty or responsibility at all. If they chose to do some fundraising at all, then it would need somebody to manage it and make sure that not one single penny of it get spent on booze.

Harshest thing in that is how he was ditched by his wife after the accident cos she didn't want to have to push him in a wheelchair! In sickness and in health! Not according to this bloke who supposedly knew him.

That is far more than the pension pot most people have to see them through retirement. In those 16 years he has written a book (or two) and had a regular newspaper column (or maybe more than one). If he had invested the compensation wisely then the income from it plus the income from his book(s) and newspaper columns should have given him a better income than many of the fans who go to watch matches and who could be expected to turn out for a testimonial match. He'll be getting his state pension (about £110 per week) in 3 years time which will help a bit. I loved Huddy as a player - I love it if we had someone half as good as him in the side now. And we all realise that these days he'd be paid £millions - but he is responsible for his own lifestyle and must live with the consequences. He had bad luck with the accident and a bad break with his wife leaving him - but he was given decent compensation - that fact that it has all gone is no one's fault but his.

I never once heard Jimmy Greenhoff pleading poverty when he was stitched up by his business partner in the Insurance Business, Jimmy lost his house and ended up driving a forklift in a carpet business in Congleton. JG is a Family man who never pissed or gambled his life away. Sorry Huddy as i said before YOU reap what you sow.

I can see no problem with feeling sorry for him and thinking he's brought most of it on himself at one and the same time. Claiming to be a 'social drinker...' we all know a few social drinkers like him. The sad thing is if he was playing today he'd have millions to piss away instead of £125 a week. Seeing as how much Stoke and Chelsea can afford to waste on third rate players with no sense, they ought to be able to help out a first rate player who didn't have any sense either. He did more for both teams and both sets of supporters than most of the people they're paying 5 figure sums a week to today ever will.

I can at least find it in my heart to have a little sympathy for a fellow human being (and one who brought me so much enjoyment in a red and white shirt) who is having a hard time whether he brought it on himself or not. Actually if someone WAS having a whipround for him I might be shamed into giving a few bob. I think Lawrieleslie has the best idea though. The PFA/clubs/FA/Premier League, whoever, ought to use some of the billions swilling round in football these days to try and help old players fallen on hard times. And to say it won't happen to today's players is bollocks. Look at Lee Hendrie.

When you see how much Stoke paid a number of footballers on our books this past season who were never if ever used. On a previous post I worked out we paid out over £10m in wages last season on around 13 players who played a handful of games between them.
You think there would be a way of helping the few who fall on hard times. The problem may always be those who are incapable of helping themselves. Even if in Hudson's case it was just an expenses paid visit to the Stoke v Chelsea game.

But, from his comments in that article, he isn't yet ready to admit that he has a problem. If we (or Chelsea and Stoke) raised a sum for him, I doubt he would use it wisely - just as he obviously didn't use his compensation wisely. Like a lot of us I give to deserving causes from time to time but only when I feel my money will be put to good use and make a difference. Sadly, I doubt if giving money to Huddy would make a difference - anymore than it would if I had given money to Gazza or George Best. I'd rather donate the money to charities working with the homeless or alcoholics, to be honest.

There are hundreds of thousands of people in similar (or worse) situation to this and they have not had a tenth of what Hudson has drunk. George Best and Gazza have both been named elsewhere on this thread, sad as these cases are, they are self inflicted. If they admit they are their own main problem then (and only then) would I be happy to help them. I have no desire to help them buy their next pint.
