No thanks, one good spell and nothing since, we need pace and youth to balance the squad, Bentley will provide neither.

Not really sure what he would add to the squad other than cover for the wings considering Pennant has re-signed?.
The only real position I can take from Bentley coming to Stoke possibly will be added depth to the squad and backup for the right wing.
Much rather we pushed the boat out a little further for Tom Ince or Nathan Redmond though. Bentley just smacks of a Pulis-esque "dogs home" signing too me.

Wide and varied opnions on here which is healthy. BUT let's not judge a player on what shampoo he uses.

Imo he cant be worse than what we've got... but I thimk Redmond would be a better investment if we could land him. He was shagging someone he shouldn't have been shagging, allegedly.

The most worrying thing about this post is that rorymscfc isn't the type of poster to come on here spinning a yarn Maybe, but he's a dentist so I'm not going to argue with him if he's holding a drill

Considering he signed a bunch of twats at QPR, then signed the twat Pennant, it wouldn't be a surprise if he signed the twat Bentley. After the initial disappointment regarding the appointment After signing someone we previously thought was a twat for a manager I'd started to think it might actually be a good move after all. Not looking good though so far.

People are so f**king negative on here. We haven't even signed him!!!
IF he signs - still got a few years in him, a cheap deal would mean good cover/competition, Hughes could get the best out of him and he could be a "dogs home" signing.
If he doesn't sign - let's go and get someone else then!!

It's poor competition. A bloke who's on his final, final, final warning after a season of doing nowt. Or a bloke who'd rather be in Marbella and hasn't had a good season for five years. I can't see why some of us aren't too happy with that.

The more you think about it, the more it seems unlikely Hughes will be able to resist the gamble of Bentley on a free.
He had three great seasons under him and sold him for a stupid amount and got him into the England side. He'll think he's still got that in his locker and he'll be the man to coax it out of him.
And all for nowt.
I do worry that he's effectively the same player as Pennant though.
And the reasons for his career falling off a cliff are as clear as mud.
Redknapp didn't seem to want to touch him with a barge pole and while it was always going to be tough to keep Lennon out of the team, he did seem to be completely ignored.
Mind you, Redknapp also ignored Pienaar, who re-found his form immediately on his return to Everton.

My worry with Bentley would be how many players of that ilk (a knob)can you manage at the club at any one time.
We already have Pennant & it appears Brek Shea is trying his best to do something stupid, add Bentley to the mix and Sparkys time will be spent baby sitting these 3 loose cannons!

Good player imo - Pennant needs to co-operate or he will be gone! Plus side is he's worked with Hughes before.

Is he that much of a loose cannon? Bit of a wannabe Beckham who wants to eat himself - but has he ever been involved in any serious stuff?

I am happy for us to take a chance on him as long as his deal is similar to Pennant and heavily on a bonus structure.
He is free and if he is paid around 15-20k per week will only cost 1million for a season, worth a punt.

Oh joy! First Pennant and now Bentley. FFS I can imagine the shit Pulis would have got if he contemplated signing Bentley. Has Coatesy reverted to type? We'll be replacing Scholes with Fat Jez next.

Bentley is more of a wide midfielder in the Beckham mould but one who has been conspicuous by his absence for the last few years. How many England caps did he get? Surely we wouldn't offer him more than a year deal?

On a free it could well turn out to be very good business.
Especially if Hughes can get the better out of him like at Blackburn.
