It will all come down to the wheeling and dealing some will have to go but i expect a left back at least and another striker who has scored a few goals

A few weeks ago this message board was full of words like: New Direction The Academy Young Players Unsustainable This is probably the start of all these things and the spending is coming to an end. Isn't the new direction what most people wanted? It depends whether those words heighten the risk of relegation. The Academy investment is marvellous, maybe Coates ultimate legacy and gets my full support not least because of the opportunity it will offer for the talented in the local area - but it will be a decade before we see it really affect the first team. I might be dead.

Don't worry fellas he ain't taken a training session yet, when he does I think he may realise we need several and need to get rid of the same amount.

We are not far off having a really good squad many people are forgetting TP and his cage which restricted our players, Christ whelan might even be able to shoot, our full back/s might be able to go over the half way line in the short a left back, a winger or 2 and a striker thats it a CM should N'Zonzi leave, then look at where we are in January

Why would we need 7 players though?
A left-back a winger and perhaps a striker is all we need
Goalkeeper - 3 quality ones on the books at moment Central Defence - Sorted could do with some cover perhaps Right Back - enough options
Central Midfield - Plenty of options. If Nzonzi leaves then we need a replacement for sure. Otherwise we have Wilson, Adam, Palacios, Cuvelier to partner the Zonz
Winger - Definitely need 1 and maybe 2 wingers
Striker - Keep Jerome, Walters and one of Jones/Crouch. Replace one of those
I make that 3 maybe 4 new first teamers and 1 back up for central defence

There were never going to be wholesale changes - Hughes wouldn't have got the job if he had a big shopping list
Also we have a squad which has maintained it's place in the Prem with a degree of comfort - last season excepted
The core of the squad is fine - and we have decent strikers if they get the service - that is the key and the worry. If we are to rely on two ageing wingers then we will have problems
Players generally will only come in if we are able to sell some of the existing squad

Everything depends on who goes out - whether for big money we can't refuse (Bego), because they want to leave (SNZ and KJ), because we can wheel and deal to get in a player Hughes fancies (Crouch for Hoilett?) or just because having seen them train Hughes realises they are not up to scratch (pick any from about 8 or 9!). We will not add more than one or two if virtually all the current squad stays (a left back and another winger maybe), but I find it hard to believe that at least 5 will not leave and be replaced.

Don't worry fellas he ain't taken a training session yet, when he does I think he may realise we need several and need to get rid of the same amount. The brief interview with Bowen in the Sentinel mentions stability twice. Stability is the name of the game, because the tumultuous turmoil of recent months could send the club into a decline from which it might struggle to recover. Incomings and outgoings will be few and far between. The re-signing of JP demonstrated this further for any straggling doubters.

We all know the state of the squad that Hughes is inheriting. In an ideal world we'd find buyers for the 8 players that aren't good enough and the new Scouting set up would kick in and we'd replace them all with 8 quality new signings. In reality we have to accept some of the dross will remain with us. I'd be happy enough with 4 new signings, all good enough to go straight into the first team (I.e. no more Ness, Edu, Soares, Tonge, Arismendi type signings). I suppose its how he sees these players in a cage free environment isn't it? The other thing is there was a probably a bit of truth about what he said in his press conference, the squad might be short on quality but it general coasts to 40 points every year, that does indicate that the players have 'something about them'. He may value that after working with QPR mercenaries for a year. That makes sense, but we are being linked with Taraabt and Bentley(apparently). I agree with your point in general, though.

I make it at least 7. 2 strikers 2 wingers 1 left back 1 centre back 1 central midfielder It didn't work out well at QPR I dont think this manager will want a repeat of what he experienced there, 11 strangers starting the season.

It didn't but only about 4 of them would be definites for the first XI. They'd be the left back, central midfielder, a winger and a striker. Areas where we desperately need to improve. Maybe we don't need another winger but if we rely on them like we did under TP I don't want us to be caught short, so we need another as back up. I want Crouch and Jones ideally so that's why I want two strikers, we definitely need one of them pair gone. And we need a sub centre back, someone like Chris Baird would be ideal.

I expect 2 or 3 to move on, creating the chance to replace them and add a couple more (Rory and Deans departure already creating those 2 places in the squad)
I would like to see another striker, creating some good and fair competition for a place in the starting 11.
I think that we do need another winger to replace Etherington in our starting set up too.
A quality full back is important and worth spending a bit more money to make this happen imo
As well as Hughes being very determined to show his capabilities as a manager, our squad need to do the same in the new regime.

Looking at it a different way, this team got us to the Cup final and played some really good, direct football that i'd have back in a flash with open arms.
Sorensen
Wilko/Wilson Huth Shawcross Higginbotham
Pennant Whelan Whitehead Etherington
Jones Walters
Out of our current squad we could field this team:
Begovic
Wilson Huth Shawcross Cameron
Pennant Whelan N'Zonzi Etherington/Shea
Jones Walters
With an addition of two we could field the following team:
Begovic
Onuoha Huth Shawcross Pieters
Pennant Whelan N'Zonzi Hoilett
Jones/Crouch Walters
As a bare minimum, with a manager prepared to open a team up a bit more than the previous one we could easily finish mid table again with that side and add a bit of entertainment. It wouldn't be a seismic shift from where we are now and would be a good base for Hughes to start from and then push off from next summer. What would we be looking at? Onuoha 3M? Pieters 3M? Hoilett 5M?

Having Pennant, Whelan, Walters and KJ/Crouch still starting would desperately disappointing for me. I just think we can do better. Good squad players though.

Will the wingers have to work as hard in a Hughes team? I don't think Etherington is past it yet. Maybe Shea will be good enough to rotate with him and there won't be as much pressure on Ethers. Are we all assuming Hughes is going to play two wingers? There are too many if's to speculate how many signings we need, but it's fun to do so.
Also, I see Hughes' quote as a figure of speech, "one or two" meaning a few. If we don't lose anyone I'd be happy with a top quality left-back and a pacy winger before the season starts. Barring a mass of injuries and suspensions that should leave a squad capable of being mid-table by Christmas, when Hughes will have a better idea of what we need ready for the January transfer window.

People really take things to literally. Anyone with a bit of intelligence isn't going to say we need to rip the team apart and start again.
We need a few signing but a mass overhaul is asking for trouble.

Yeah because Adam is right at the top of the list of deadwood in our squad isn't he? Pulis has left our squad with a good percentage of this deadwood you talk about,Charlie Adam certainly isn't amongst this group of players. It won't take Hughes long to identify the areas we are weak in,because its ridiculously obvious and will be so to him after a couple of training sessions. On the other hand it will take a few transfer windows to put right and I wouldn't expect anymore than 3 or 4 new faces in by the time the season kicks in. It's the quality of these new faces that's the important thing. YES HE IS, unfit , overated, cant be trusted or stupid, lazy, not a team player , one good pass every 20, bad attitude, but I would like to think Hughes can make a player out of him Utter bollocks. If Adam is as bad as you state above then Hughes would have to be the finest magician of all time to "make a player out of him". Are you trying to tell me that out of all the players in our squad he is the worst? If you are and I'm pretty sure you are, then you with the utmost respect are talking out of your hairy ring piece.

No it will go straight into the pay packets of the players and the back pockets of their agents. You have to buy some new players before that will have any effect. Every player and their agent in the Prem will be after a new contract to get their slice of the extra cash, especially after the lunatic contract awarded to Carroll by WHam. All of that money is only ever going to head in one direction.

1 or 2 in defence 1 or 2 in midfield 1 or 2 on the wings and 1 or 2 up front
