He will be like a new signing if true. Fighting to prove himself and repay the club for giving him a second.. No... Third.... Fourth chance. Give him a six month contract to begin with with strict rules in place for him to win an extension. Like a short loan/trial. I see no harm in giving him another chance if he performs as well as we know he can.

Everyone knows the lad got talent, it's basically a free transfer. 1 year contract can't hurt too much can it? if hughes wants to play with 2 wingers, then pennant is good back-up if not 1st team if his head screwed on.

Gav...and you know that how?
I know a few people at Stoke, or at least I did, and to a man, they said that whatever problems Pennant had with Pulis, he trained well and when forced to train and play with the youngsters, his attitude was nothing less than exemplary and his performances both professional and good.
To be honest, I would take the opinion of people that have come into contact with Pennant in a working environment that much of the shit that is posted on here.
Pennant may well be an absolute tosser. Clearly he is given his criminal record but if his problem is with the manager and it doesn't affect his relationship with other players, then there is absolutely no harm in inviting him to train with us and giving him the opportunity to win himself another chance at Stoke City.
In such circumstances, we would have everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose.

How many of you have even bothered to read the article? It's pure speculation. I think the club being open to his return and the direct Coates quotes are new and pretty definite though?

It does sound, for all the world, like Hughes has discussed it with Coates and is, broadly, open to it?
Can't see Coates being quoted on something that's a non-runner.
I'd like to know who's driving it?
Without knowing exactly what Pennant has done beyond the alleged couple of incidents before the Everton and Crawley games, and what shape he's in, it's a hard one to judge.
Instinctively, I think it's time we moved on as I'd have been surprised if any other Prem teams would have offered him a deal this summer.
We maybe could squeeze a bit more out of him - but at 31 in January, there probably isn't a great deal more left in him, even though he's a clever player who isn't all about blistering pace.
It's surprising how few 30+ widemen are about these days at the top level. The decline of Ethers is a case in point

Suppose I dont know really! I look at what I do know though....The tag on his ankle while at Arsenal, the drink driving at Birmingham, Zaragoza refused to play him as he didn't turn up for training, the breaches of club discipline (think these are accepted, please don't anyone shout up with the Fuller counter argument!!)...12 months ago arrested for drink driving and a suspended jail sentence .......I don't think it has even been the fact that he has an issue with the other players. Its just those who are paid to get the best out of him all seem to end up in the same place. He probably is a great guy who would be a laugh to train with and have a beer with though!

I don't see what we have to lose by offering him one last chance.
Wingers are difficult to recruit (see M Kightly) so it's worth a shot.

Pulis would've obviously briefed him on the reasons for his exile, and Coates doesn't seem to have taken them as sufficient cause for permanent exile from the club. Instead, the door is ajar.

But those reasons were good enough to rip up his contract? It would indicate that the Pulis situation (ie his mutual termination) was a swift call then. The two decisions imo don't go hand in hand. Worrying.

I never got the impression he was dressing room poison, whose behaviour was a problem for the other players. He always seemed a popular figure throughout his exile. It always seemed entirely personal between him and Pulis (not to say Pulis was particularly in the wrong without knowing the facts?) My concerns would be entirely down to what he's got left in the tank to offer a Premier League team

I agree to a point but the chance of him breaching club discipline again must be odds on, which could lead to another million quid or so in wages down the toilet. Not a decision to take lightly.

We could risk missing the boat with someone like Ince or Redmond similar to Zaha simply to get 2 seasons out of Pennant. This also (if it is true) sets a bit if a president, for the rest of the squad and it could possibly cause some issues.

What a stupid, backward decision. An old troublemaker, a waste of wages and a waste of a squad place. Not happy. I would understand your sentiment if Pennant HAD been offered a contract, but let's just see what won't happen.

Personally, I doubt if Pennant will be able to cut the mustard at top level again. But I'd have no problem with him trying to prove he has still got it in pre-season. One problem, of course, is that he won't be able to go to the USA leg of pre-season because of his criminal record. However, the 25 man Prem squad does not have to be named until the end of August so a weekly contract until then should give him time to prove himself and as it would only be two months wages, it isn't going to break the bank.
If he does manage to earn a new contract it should be weighted in favour of the club so that ANY more antics like we saw in the past two years would be deemed a breach of contract leading to him being shown the door with no compensation.

The truth is we have been poor ever since he dropped out of the team.
Whether he can reproduce that is another question
But for me, barring central defenders, Pennant has been our most influential outfield player since we came into the Premier.

I'd certainly give him per season to see where his head is at right now.

I Cant believe some of the truly negative rubbish responses on this thread - after last seasons 'scintillating wing play', especially down the right hand side - featuring the unplayable Jonny Walters and, that king of not the step over but, --- 'trip over the fucking ball' Ryan Shotton - Michael Kightly even, jesus wept! he would not get in port vales side
So
to not re- consider Pennant as a better option to what we witnessed last season is frankly, laughable
Fit and eager he is proven as, a good a right sided player as pretty much anybody in the premier league
and another point - you're sent to wolves by a manager you openly hate as a punishment - what do you do ?
yep thats right - make your self look world class eh ?
(daft sods)
Jermaine Pennant - STILL the best winger at Stoke city
New manager - fresh start - decent player for buttons (no brainer)

From a position of complete ignorance about his physical condition, I'd agree that a hungry Pennant has certainly got potentially more to offer than Kightly or Ethers - but that's not exactly saying a great deal.
Saying he's the best winger on the books is a bit like saying Ringo Starr is the most talented surviving Beatle apart from Paul McCartney. True, but where does it take the debate?
Hypothetically, I'd feel better about next season if we were going in with Shea, Pennant and TWO new wingers to fight it out - with Kightly and Ethers gone.

Perversely (considering I think he's one of the worst player we've seen in the Premier League) I have hopes for Kightly under Hughes. We can't afford to have 2 gambles on the wing (both him and Pennant are imo) so one has to go I'd prefer Pennant to go because he already bloody well has. That's not including Ethers who has to go too.
