North stafford hotel opposite train station offers good value and close enough to both city centre and stadium . Holiday inn by stadium but not much else up there . Stone is about 7 miles from stoke so a bit of a trek . Id go for Stafford hotel if I was you mate .

Depends what you're planning to do in the evening, plenty of pubs and places to eat in Stone and for match day you're only a 10 minute walk from the train station or there'll be a bus that runs too the ground and back that'll cost you £4.50 or £5. If you want a night out in Hanley taxi is about £15-£20 back.

Looks like day i come up its a day at staffordshire regiment museum then following day the national arboretum then up to stoke. Hopefully see relations over next few days who i have not seen in 20 years plus as well as see if i can find out where grandparents lived and are buried.. Think relations still live in blurton area not sure in they still drink in lambourne

I'd stay at the crown in Stone. Stayed there myself and its a nice place to stay and its smack bang in the middle of the town. There are some excellent places to eat and drink in the town and it is definitely a good choice for the older couple.
Granvilles is excellent as is the Rose and Crown.
There is also Pasta di Piazza, Thai Welcome as was and the Oriental Gardens.
Going out onto the A34 from Stone is The Wayfarer.
The bus is safe enough from there but a taxi is cheap enough at about 15 quid if you fancy something a little more private.

Released from the army Class 'A' 21.12.1945. He helped build the burma railway. Its great to learn history TEST

The Arboretum is a marvellous place to visit, I don't if you're aware but there's a German war cemetery on the chase too which is fascinating, it even has Zeppelin crews that were shot down.

You might as well stay in Stone if You're going to the Arboretum and Staffordshire Regiment Museum as well as the game. In the Crown is a decent Mexica restaurant too which is totally out of keeping with the hotel, they do very nice Burrito's! Plenty of real pubs if that's Your thing too. Stone is a lovely town and bridges the two areas of interest (South and North Staffs) pretty well. And avoiding buses and taxi's You might be able to get the train to and from the game depending on times. And if the times suit (take into account getting back to Stoke from the Brit) then I'd do that. Hope Your trip goes well bar the game!

I' ll be doing that on route and staying in lichfield on thursday night.. I do like a drink but not to fussed to be honest about going to pubs. Eating out is another matter though. Also getting cabs ( i have my own lol i am a london cab driver ) so might drive up in that from north essex but worried it might get targeted by herberts if result goes our way.. ( if i stay in holiday inn by the ground ) also i dont like the old womans driving lol.. Got to ask is there still a chip van down the trentham road at blurton near the ciu club ( i think ) thats ax the road.. Can remember having pudding chips mushy peas and gravy many a time from there and in hanley near where "the place" was after being on the piss with relations.

Also trying to get a book about gallipoli ( suvla bay) where grandad 1st served if cant get from library i will buy it off amazon or ebay.. TEST

TEST Same here, my Nan & Grandad never spoke about the war to me or my sister, and we only had little tit bits from mum & dad, but found the rest online, when we found out about grandad in Burma and told mum/dad, they said "thats right"... i thought why not tell us then beforehand. Thinking back, they must have seen some terrible things, but i'd love to have heard the stories, probably just to bad to speak about. TEST

If that's the case then it's up to You, staying closer to the ground would probably be more useful than in Stone. But there are lots of decent places to eat in Stone. I wouldn't worry about Your cab (he says ) it should be fine I would have thought. *bayernoatcake claims no responsibility if Your cab is trashed on game day Not a clue about the chip van sorry.

I'd definitely stop in Stone mate.
Easy to get to the game, easy enough to get out to Alrewas, small friendly, descent enough pubs and eating places.
Nice town IMO

Stone is pretty close (4 milesish) to Meir Heath so if You want to eat there it's fine. There are some decent pubs who do decent grub in the nearer vicinity though, The Black Lake, Swynnerton Arms and the Spot Gate Inn where You can dine in two old train carriages. There's a decent Indian restaurant in Meir Heath too.
