After weeks of speculation, Sony officially unveiled its next console from a live event in New York today: the PlayStation 4. The console will be released this holiday season. Sony's Andrew House said the new console will create "experiences that surpass gamers' wildest expectations." Lead system architect on the PlayStation 4, Mark Cerny, said "the development of a next-gen platform started about five years ago" and that it's goal is "freeing developers from technological barriers." Cerny has a history in the video game industry dating back more than 30 years, first with Atari and later companies like Sega of Japan and Universal Interactive Studios. Cerny said the platform is "by game creators for game creators" and that its architecture is "like a PC, but supercharged." PS4 uses the X86 CPU and has 8GB of memory and a local hard drive. It uses APU technology and GDDR5 memory, which is typically reserved for "top of the line, high end graphics cards." The pillars of PS4 are Simple, Immediate, Social, Integrated and Personalized. PlayStation 4 supports suspending and reloading play sessions. The console has a secondary chip for uploading and downloading in the background. Digital games can be played as they are being downloaded. The system supports seamless uploads of gameplay, spectating friends' gameplay sessions in real time as well as integrated chat. Players will have profile pages like Facebook integrated to the "full PlayStation ecosystem." Dual Shock 4Games:

About £450 when they first come out is my guess. i read somewhere yesterday, that Sony had learned from it's mistakes with the PS3 which was released in the £450 bracket, and that they were going to look to have a launch price of around £300 if that's true, it's a cracking price and my guess is they will be bloody hard to get hold of on first release!

Ate the rumours true about not been able to play pre owned games on it? No, that was a rumour about the next Xbox. PS4 will play pre-owned games. Has this been confirmed because I read a rumour that you'd have to pay some money to be able to unlock pre owned games...via your Sony ps3 account.

That Deep Down trailer is the only game that catches my eye. The bit where he chucks him the torch and walks through that cave is absolutely beautiful!

Wonder if all the games are 1080p? Thats the better one isnt it? Or is it 1080i? They're all 1080p mate, 1080i looks no better than 720p. Detail looks amazing in these games, time to upgrade my TV. Some 1080p screens... Nobody knows what res the games are running at natively, details of the console and its performance were minimal at best. We also have no info on what fps they run at. Anything less than 60 is awful.

I'e been a 360 gamer since it was released but this year i'm going to have to switch allegiances because the PS4 sounds so much better in every department.
Trading and sharing games is a big thing for me. I'm not prepared to splash out £50 a piece for every game i want to play on the Xbox.

I (stupidly) watched the PS4 press conference late last night. It was as boring as bread for the most part and the exclusive games were shite compared to xbox's. The only reason PS4 will win the console war is because of the restrictions MS have put with regards to preowned games and the always connected thing. The price is only cheaper because xbox includes kinect aswell.

I'll get a PS4 for the same reason I got a 360. It's cheaper and more powerful.
They do also have some first party developers who make good stuff, even if the best ones won't have anything ready at launch.
All Microsoft have that I'll miss is the amazing Forza series.
Halo has always been rubbish and that Titanfall thing is basically COD with Mech suits. I think I'll pass.
But really the most interesting stuff will come from third parties, which the PS4 looks like being the best system for.
Or maybe I'll just get neither and just play Rayman Legends forever as that looks like the best game in the world.

I'm always amused when console gamers find the graphics of the next gen consoles "amazing". You people do realise your years behind the PC in terms of hardware?

I'm always amused when console gamers find the graphics of the next gen consoles "amazing". You people do realise your years behind the PC in terms of hardware? Graphics are largely irrelevant. Why the fuck would I spend shit loads of money on an awesome PC to play boring crap like Battlefield or Crysis 3 on silly graphics settings. All the best PC games run on my crappy laptop. Minecraft, League of Legends, Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, numerous fascinating indie games on Steam. Not to mention the mods of many games. The PC gamers constantly banging on about graphics are massively missing the point of what makes PC gaming great. Most PC gamers actually own awful machines that have worse graphics than the upcoming consoles, but they have a wealth of original stuff available to them. The encouraging thing about ps4 is the push for more indie titles. I'm looking forward to that. I'm not buying another high powered gaming PC until Half Life 3 is out. I simply don't require one to enjoy the best of PC gaming.

You can play every decent PC game on a much cheaper console though, apart from Starcraft, and you can't play console exclusive games like Last of Us, Uncharted, Halo, Mario 3D... Nice try though. But you can't play games like DayZ, battlefield with a shite load more players on it. I have consoles too, but prefer PC.

PS4 has 64 player online on Battlefield. Yeah, but that's irrelevant because Battlefield is retarded.

There are thousands of decent PC games that you can't play on console. I'd struggle to name many exclusive console games that I'd actually want to play.
lulz @ Halo and Mario 3d being "decent", I can't comment on Uncharted cause I've never even heard of it. The Last of Us was actually the first good console game I've played in a long time, and that was like 8 months ago or something now.
