Messi Ronaldo Iniesta Xavi RVP I think over the last decade there was a time when defenders would feature quite prominently in these lists - Nesta, Cannavaro, Thuram, Lucio etc (Rio at his best around 2008 was excellent too IMO). Seem to be more goals scored these days which perhaps has seen their decline. Except if you're Bayern Munich. They've only conceded 7 goals all season and have managed 14 clean sheets in 20 league games. And they've had that Dante bloke who played last night and looked absolutely woeful play for them in most games. Walcott tore him a new one, Wenger's eyes must have lit up when he saw that with their Champions League fixture on the horizon.

There is only one current footballer with a new position of play on the pitch named after him.
Consequently, he must be the best player in the world!

Messi and Ronaldo Ibra Bale Falcao
The only defenders to come close would be Lahm, Silva and Kompany.

I don't think that Bale can be classed in the same category as Ronaldo and Messi as world class. Yes he's good, but I don't think that he can be regarded as a truly world class player, at least not yet

#1 Leo Messi, then there is absolutely nothing... in the nearest 100 positions or so in the list.
Noone in the whole wide world in this universe will ever come near what he's achieved. He is best by far of all times and times to come.
After him there all lots and lots of ok players...
David Silva, Kun Aguero, Gomez, Amauri, Iniesta, Mertesacker, Xavi, Zlatan, Van Persie, Begovic, Puyol, Buffon etc.
