Father-of-one Marc Hughes lived to see the three things he wanted most in the world before an aggressive brain tumour claimed his life at the age of 35.
He and his partner Lisa, who he later married, were expecting their daughter Keira Mae when he was told in 2006 he had just a one in 10 chance of surviving the next two years.
But the plumber lived to see his daughter born and helped her celebrate her first Christmas and birthday; he married his soul mate Lisa; and he saw his beloved Stoke City promoted to the Premier League.
Marc died on May 22 at the Douglas Macmillan Hospice in Blurton, surrounded by his family.
Together they had fought for him to be treated with the drug Temozolomide to help him beat an aggressive glioblastoma tumour.
They feared they would not get the drug on the NHS because cash-strapped PCTs in North Staffordshire and South Cheshire had been unable to supply it to patients in the past.
But after launching a campaign to raise funds to get the drug privately, he was told his NHS application was successful.
After initial treatment, Marc was even given the all clear by doctors, who discovered his tumour had disappeared.
"We were ecstatic," said Lisa, aged 31.
"Marc returned to work in August, 2007, but then he started to get headaches. We tried to stay positive, but the consultant told me the tumour had come back and they couldn't believe how aggressive it was. They said they couldn't operate.
"All they could give him was a form of intravenous chemotherapy. They told me it wouldn't do a lot of good and it was the beginning of the end.
"Last November, Marc was in the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and they said he only had about two months. I didn't tell Marc.
"We were due to get married in September this year, but how do you tell someone you love so much that they are not going to be here by then?
"So we got married at the hospital. Even though I was in my jeans and a track-suit top, I was still nervous. But I didn't have to be in a wedding dress with pearls, it's what the vows meant to us that was important.
"The staff had a bottle of champagne in the fridge which we opened. It was lovely."
The Stoke City season ticket holder was at the hospice when the Potters achieved promotion to the Premier League, and staff took him outside to watch the team's triumphant open-top bus parade through the city.
The family always refused to give up hope and, after contacting specialists at a hospital in Birmingham, Marc had undergone an operation to remove part of the tumour on New Year's Eve. He then had follow-up operations in February and March.
But by April, he was transferred to the Douglas Macmillan Hospice where he was cared for until he died.
Lisa, who lived with her husband and Keira Mae, now aged 17 months, at Ledstone Way, Meir Hay, said: "It was heart breaking to see Marc deteriorate.
"He passed so quickly, but it was peaceful and he had his family around him.
"I whispered to him that I would make sure Keira went to see Stoke play every week with her granddad, because that's what he wanted.
"Marc didn't complain about the cancer, we are so proud of him for how he coped."

My dad Jim. Such a privilege to have been his son. Went to Stoke games with him from the age of eight until I was in my 20s. We all touch the stone with his name on it before every match to bring us luck - boy has it paid off too! My dad died in 1996 when Lou Macari was manager and we never stop thinking about him - even my daughter who is now 22 carries a possession of his whenever she needs a bit of luck - interviews etc Thanks for everything Dad you still feel part of everything we do! My dad Colin. He watched Stoke from when he was a nipper in the 30s. Took me my first match in 1967 versus West Ham and continued to do so along with his mates for many years after. The league cup final, all 4 FA cup semis he really was a fantastic Dad.
Died Feb 13th 1994, the day after a drab 3-0 defeat against Barnsley. He would have loved to have seen us in the Premiership, mind you he wouldnt have been a lover of our style of play.
Cheers Dad, you were one in a million and will never be forgotten
