Mind you Arsenal weren't all that back then

No they weren't. In fact they lost two cup finals in a week in 1980 and it knocked the stuffing out of them. They were crap for a fair few years until George Graham kicked them up their arses.

My daughter and I will be there, as ever. And we'll enjoy the day out, whatever the result. Absolutely no point in spending all that money and time if we don't. I'll enjoy seeing our team at one of the best stadiums in the country. I'll hope for a performance which is more akin to the one at Chelsea earlier in the season than the one at Man City recently. The only two away games this season in which I've felt that there were really no positives from our performance have been the last two - Man City and Swansea. All the others have offered something even though we've only had one victory. So we need to get back to our earlier form. I love clean sheets away from home and we've had a few of them. Can't see us keeping a clean sheet tomorrow - but who knows, this is football. Objective logic says we will get well beaten, but since when has being a football supporter been about logic ? And I'd rather be getting beaten at the Emirates, than Nuneaton, Hartlepool, Torquay and a whole host of other places I've seen us lose in my time supporting the club. Good post Malcolm. I'll be there to. Already down in the smoke after travelling down last night. Visiting a few real ale pubs before the match.

Beautiful day in London.
Time to go on the London eye I thought.
Then I realised it was like £90 to get on.
Oh well, lets get pissed!

Chapman scored. First game of the 81/82 season I remember it well Well actually not, we spent most of the game in the bar under the clock end, after a pre match session in London, heard a noise above and thought the arse had scored, only when the minibus stopped for a pub in Watford and we got the green sports paper we saw we had scored and won

As already mentioned it's a good effort by the 1300 who'll make the journey.
In the days before I had my lad I'd probably have been one of them. However what's on offer from a Pulis away side against the cost of tickets and tavel for me + the lad doesn't make much sense so unfortunately there won't be 1302 there today.
I dearly hope at about 4.50pm this afternoon I'm kicking the cat, angered by the fact I made a stupid decision not to go today thus missing a famous victory for Stoke at the home of the Mighty Arsenal.
Unfortunately I suspect the cat need not fear a kicking.
Go on Stoke!
(By the way I was there the las time we won at Arsenal, not many can say that!)

Great post Malcolm full of the usual platitudes and insinuations that we should remember where we've come from.
I'll remember where we've come from as we make our way back down the pyramid and will think back to times when respected supporters such as yourself simply sat back and accepted any old shit that was thrown at them.
As for this season, you must have really enjoyed the away day experiences at Norwich and Villa for you to say that you could take something away from those two absolutely shocking performances.
Enjoy your day out. I am off to a kids 5th Birthday party with my little boy, then we are going to a play centre, then we will have a little game of football ourselves in the garden. After that, I will look to see how many we have lost by, and if it isn't too many, I will come on here and tell everyone how positive it is that we haven't lost by too many and that a 2-0, 3-0 even 4-0 defeat at Arsenal could happen even to the best of teams.
I look how far we've come alright. If you'd have told me 10 years ago, 20 years ago even, that I would choose not to go to watch my club away at Arsenal and wouldnt' even bother listening to the game on the radio, I wouldn't have believed you.
Enjoy your day out lads. 1300 is a great effort but when I woke this morning, I was chuffed to fuck that I wouldn't be driving down there to watch the shit myself.
Fingers crossed for a win that leaves me kicking myself at 4.50pm.

Stanner . How can i explain this to you in simple terms. We may be shit but we are our shit and proud as punch. Fuck knows where you reside (nowhere near Manchester) thats for sure. As a football fan you have to put up with the rough and the smooth ,in our case more rough for the good times to feel special. You and your ilk jump on the shit-fan band wagon because its easy and your weak. Its probably makes you feel better about your inept little life. Now you and your types opinion are the last that we would listen to. Do kindly realise you are a sad inept weasel for even taking the time and effort to keep coming ,reading and posting on a Stoke board. So in final summing up and i quote "DO FUCK OFF YOU GLORY HUNTING WANKSTAIN".

1300 laughable, you're fast becoming the new Wigan of the Prem, you slag off Utds plastic fans but at least we sell out every away game, whats your excuse no need to slag stokies off mate, i think your away support is and has been top notch for decades, but lets be honest here a large % of your away support do not go to home games and thats a fact, simple reason being they cant be bothered as OT is just as bad as "the library" these days and all the JCL's who are happy to turn up for home games simply give their client ref no's to others for away games, whereas 99% of stokies at Arsenal today attend all games home and away, with over 40,000 season ticket holders i'd be amazed if you didnt sell out your aways with the largest allocation being around 5,000. oh and while we are at it over plastics what happened to this famous waiting list for season tickets at utd ? they went on general sale this season didnt they

Well, triple 2012 losers, I'd worry about your forthcoming blow up in the last 14 games. Man City will undoubtedly overtake your lot - once again and your half of Manc will be jumping off the Barton Bridge. Can't wait for you to lose it.

My post didn't have any insinuations or platitudes let alone being "full of" them. I was just saying how I felt and how my daughter and I approach away games. We did enjoy the day. A nice lunch with some Arsenal supporting friends followed by a game in which our team - all of them - showed great fight and commitment and came within a few minutes and a deflected goal of a very good result. A reasonable turnout of stokies in the circumstances gave the team good vocal support throughout. Each to their own. That's how I personally feel and I shall continue to travel and support my club, and enjoy the experience. If I didn't, I wouldn't do it.

Perhaps you can share with everyone how you are managing this feat of continuing to extract enjoyment out of your away day excursions Malc because it isn't clear from the above posts.
Is it the company of your family and friends? Is it the quality of the luncheon? Do you enjoy travel for its own ends?
I just wondered when there are so many people who you know well who have rejected following the team to away matches despite the fact that we have been and seen us lose in all the places you mention and some of the absentees have been to even more of the same than you and I.
It can't be because you really get a kick out of such expensively assembled players running around a lot and offering zero goal threat or attacking intent is it?
For me it was far more justifiable back in the days you describe to offer my support to a bunch of triers attempting to play football and failing than it is now supporting a bunch of footballers being reduced to triers and failing.
What are you seeing that isn't reducing you to the level of despondency that has afflicted supporters who used to put even you laudable devotion to shame in the following to the ends of the Earth stakes?

For ages my main sympathy after a shit away defeat was with the Stokies who did the journey and spent the time and money on going. But our away shitness is so utter that is waning. Manchester is a good place to go for a pint and all that but that new years day shit, well, what did anyone expect??
