and that is why we must win today.
For all those of a certain age who were taunted mercilessly in the playgrounds and workplaces by know-nowt idiots in their red tops.
Those who chose to support Liverpool, the easy option. This whilst we struggled to stay in the top division and often dropped out - the city they were born in and they mocked it's main football team and laughed at our tears.
Forget United, Chelsea, Citeh etc - this lot today are the creator of what seeds have been sown since 1992. TThey are the prototype gloryhunter machine.
This was obviously the 70's and 80's - mainly after watching them bore the arse off me many times on Sportnight. Who mentioned the backpass law being abolished, eh? Yes, they had some truly great players and hammmered many lesser teams but they were also binary-like on many wednesday nights after Harry Carpenter introduced them.
Not one Stokie I know supported them in their European Cup Finals. We were all eternally sick of the sight of their gloryhunters in Stoke-on-Trent, of which there were hundreds.
Well now, despite their history and it is a rich one, we are their equals on the pitch in 2012. I doff my cap to any genuine supporter, LFC, MUFC, PVFC, SCFC etc ...etcand I will always honour the 96...but I will always wobble my head at those who choose their club simply on the trophy cabinet.
This is as big as any game for me and if we win it's for all those kids who are now in their 30,s 40's and 50's who were seen as the lesser being, in their own city. Not any more.
We are Stoke. We must win tonight.

Good post Bunny! I have a workmate who calls himself a Liverpool fan He never goes, never has been and hates Stoke with a passion! I have a small bet on with him tonight so beating them will be great anyway but even better when he has to hand over his hard earned cash to the supporter of the worst team in premier league history(his words).

We will beat them and I have a niggly feeling, with no substance to back it up whatsoever, that Michael Owen will have something to do with it.

To my everlasting shame, I have a grand daughter who is married to a Liverpool 'supporter', (who was born in Coventry and has never been to Liverpool). As my son says, ' Yep, he's a great Liverpool supporter, never misses a televised game') ' Fortunately, the rest of my kids and grandkids are loyal Stokies, bringing no shame on the family.

For those of us living in the North West and of a certain generation there is no club to dislike more - they were the team absolutley ever glory hunter gravitated to. The dominance of the media by their former players from the 90's onwards has also meant that they continue to receive far more coverage than they justify. Result is that they are a club with an incredibly high percentage of 'supporters' who have never been to a game, visited the city etc etc. These same numpties are the ones that infest message boards looking down on clubs like ourselves. Its a shame because back in the day in the early 70's when it all started to kick in for them they were undoubtedly as good and as passionate a fan base as exisisted anywhere.

I got the shit and pisstakes off the 'Liverpool' supporters back in the 80's playground as well. Who would have thought that a Stoke fan in a Stoke school would get hammered for following his local team!!
I hate this lot more than any other gloryhunter because as Bunny says this lot started it off. I know plenty of Stoke on Trent people with no connection to the Scousers at all, never been to Anfield but supposedly bleed the Liverbird and speak passionately about 'The Reds'.
Come on Stoke effin bash em ;D

Struck a chord that did bunny! In spite of all the shit football fans have had from from ManU, Chels and Arse in recent years, I will always reserve a special disdain for Liverpool for exactly the reasons you've detailed.
As an aside, there were a fair number of Everton gloryhunters in my school back then as well.

We have a dislike of some of the Ootowners that follow us far more than you ever will/do. Jester hat wearing, who are ye chants and the sky sports led shite they come out with- not our way at all. There are some Oots though that are sound, know the score, and have a connection and a genuine reason to follow us - my eldest lad is 1 of them, but those from Stoke - to Scunthorpe and Southampton etc, should support their local team, i have no time for them and their shite they will come out with tonight in their local ale house whether we win, lose or draw. We all have them though, what were your gates before you came up?

These gloryhunters have now morphed into delusional sad feckers who have to live on past glories. In truth they are light years away from being back in the Champions league let alone win the PL. I am in Liverpool with relatives and surrounded by genuine reds but even they are even more irritating now than when they were winning CL finals. They refuse to accept the reality of their situation and tonight I am hoping we put them in their place...which is currently an average midtable side, p.s. to Bunny.....ok you don't know me but I shamefully admit to being one Stokie who cheered the win in Istanbul..my only mitigation being pissed in a bar in Dubai watching the Istanbul final and got caught up in what was to be fair an amazing comeback.

I was at school in bridgnorth, shropshire during the 80's. The only stoke fan in the place, one of the only people who went to watch their team aside from a few wolves, baggies and villa fans. Everyone else supported liverpool and i took some horrendous stick during the 84/85 season as i recall. They were a fucking monster in those days liverpool. Stick one on 'em tonight stoke. Please.

The match going lads defo know the script of where we are today, we accept we are mid table and trying with others to get into the top 4 and kick on. We knew a couple of seasons ago we were shite and could have gone down, (bottom 3 in Dec) the league were never going to say this is Liverpool we cant let the go down. We believe we are improving , but also are realistic enough to know we are nowhere near good enough to challenge, but we can always have hope. But when you want to discuss shite fans, find it slightly hypocritical when some of you lot within 10 miles of the ground wont go tonight!!! Anyway, enjoy the game tonight, im off to my 1st of 2 games today

Used to know a Liverpool fan who 'supported' them because his uncle went to university there. Another one because his daughter knew someone with a season ticket & if the season ticket holder couldn't go, he'd let her have the ticket, so she was a L/P supporter & her dad became one (despite born & bred in 'anley & going Hull in the cup in '71)

But that's a very different thing from arbitrarily picking a team from anywhere in the country because they're big/popular/successful etc.

our gate, as a survet pointed out last year, is 90% within a 15 mile radius. So any 'gloryhunters' at least come from within the ST postcode, NOT that I have anything against anyone else joining our merry band.
The word GLORY and STOKE CITY are hardly regular bedfellows are they? Are your school playgrounds now full of Stoke fans? No, thought not, but you already know my post wasn't aimed at you but the replica-wearing idiots I've just seen up Hanley. They have no shame, but also, no pride in the city they live in. I just wish they'd go to live in your city to be honest.

I went to school in the 90's and even then the "glory hunting" club of choice in my school was Liverpool. I could understand why they'd want to support Man Yoo from a glory hunting point of view, they had glory to thrive on but Liverpool? They weren't even old enough to remember the real Liverpool glory days as they were born in either '86 or '87. It's part of the reason I hate them more than no other club in the land.

I actually know someone who supported Liverpool until the cup final they lost against Man Utd (the Cantona winner if I remember correctly). He now supports Man Utd.
Gerald Pratt or what?!

Liverpool have mass armies of supporters that don't go near Anfield, and that includes people who live in the city. (Living in Liverpool for over 25 years qualifies me to make that observation). They also have 20+ coaches turning up from Wales alone every home game! And it is for them that I beg Stoke to make it a victory for us tonight. The banter has already started with me, but as usual I am careful not to appear cocky; and to be fair they are being far from their usual bullish selves, despite their win at the weekend. We have new supporters who have joined our ranks since getting into the Premier League, however most of our gate increase is to do with the dormant support that has always been there, living in North Staffordshire. As this thread shows, we also have people from the area who have joined us even before promotion into the top flight. Our club also does it's bit in ensuring that ticket prices suit the pockets of local people, unlike the global brand that is Liverpool Football Club. How else do they afford £18m for Jordan Henderson. Gooaaaarrrrnnnn Stoke, put them to the sword.

Makes me sad that kids choose the most successful club of the moment. My neighbours kid used to be regularly seem in a Chelsea top, until last summer when he appeared in a Man City top. Pathetic.
These kids might get the instant hit of success and be able to take the piss out of their mates, but they will never get that true feeling of belonging to a club. They will never scream obscenities at opposition players from 20 yards away, they will never jump up and down hugging complete strangers, and they will never leave a ground so pissed off after a dismal performance.

While I am a "recent" Stoke fan and cannot relate to any of the gloryhunting most of you experienced I did choose to support Stoke for several reasons, one of which was I did not want to just pick the "team of the moment" when I became a fan.
Sorry but I will bore those who care to read with a story. Grew up playing football (or soccer since I am from the States), and my high school team even made a trip to the UK (we went to Scotland too). As you know we didn't and barely now have any viable professional league here. So, a few years back with the advent of wonderful things like the internet that allows me to access and follow football anywhere, I wanted to jump fully into following the sport again because I enjoy it so much.
For me that meant choosing a team to support and since I have no direct connection to a place or family in England I had the option of any team I wanted. So I started to look at every team. I refused to pick a team of the moment or one who just spent the most money thanks to a stupid rich owner. Reading team histories, news and comments on that news, I knew Stoke was the team for me. I could go into all the reasons but lets just say it all fit.
So while as of this moment I have not been to a match, I am working on plans to see one next year. The last few years of pulling for Stoke have been fantastic (and many times being frustrated thanks to TP). We even had some work colleagues from Crawley over for a visit and they were annoyed and confused as to why I would be a Stoke supporter. That made me quite happy (especially since one was a LFC fan).
Go Potters!!

Good post Bunny, a reminder of my school days.
I don't really have a problem with people picking and choosing which team they support. If they want to miss out on the intense experience of highs and lows that can only come with loyally following a team that doesn't have the dice loaded in its favour, that's their problem.
But I do have a problem with people thinking they're somehow better than me just because they decide to cheer for a team that usually wins. And that's where the Liverpool (and Everton) fans at my school come in. Do it Stoke, for the outnumbered Stokies in my primary school!

Brilliant post bunny and completely echos my views on this. I have a few mates who claim to be scouse but have never been to a game and it really has annoyed me greatly for some time. Somehow claiming higher ground over us stokies.
Imagine if everybody had to support their local professional club, or one they have a connection with. The support would be so much better for all clubs, especially lower league strugglers.
That'll never happen though so we simply must beat liverpool today for all true stoke supporters everywhere. And I hope by outfootballing them too.
GOARNNN STOKE!

This was also the club that started out the money led obsession of the English football.
In the 70's they started to buy up every decent player they could get their hands on, paying them silly money to play for the Reserves and on occasion hijacking deals just so rival clubs couldn't sign them.
Up until then there had been an unwritten rule that the good players would be spread around which allowed the likes of Ipswich to win the League.
