Marvelous stuff. A real shame that away days like that are a thing of the past at any level of football now.

Certainly one of my all time favourite away memories.
Singing "we're only ten points clear" as we left the away end will stay with me forever.

That pic of Steino is a classic.
He really put everything into his shots didn't he.
What a player.

In my top 5 Desert Island Games. In the second half we were defending the away end and as the whistle blew to end the match Sandford, Cranson, Overson and Butler all turned round as one to acknowledge the massed ranks of delerious Stokies.
Happy days

It had been my 21st birthday the previous day and I was nursing a huge hangover. Stoke made it worse!

It had been my 21st birthday the previous day and I was nursing a huge hangover. Stoke made it worse! What a shame. It's doesn't seem imaginable now, but this was actually the first time I'd seen Stoke win at The Hawthorns, on my seventh visit there! Believe it or not, before this victory, it was quite a graveyard for Stoke. I'd seen a few drubbings there, including a 4-1 in 86/87 and 6-0 in 88/89.

Believe it or not, before this victory, it was quite a graveyard for Stoke. I'd seen a few drubbings there, including a 4-1 in 86/87 and 6-0 in 88/89. Yes, I remember those as well. 6-0 just before Christmas and the Feb 1987 4-1 win, a week before Stoke's big cup game v Coventry. Crooks got 2 in that one. Back then we had a good record in the home games v you lot. I saw a 3-0 win in March 1984 and the 2-0 in November '84 when Ian Painter missed an open goal (rumoured to have been on purpose as he was a Baggies' fan). Strangely back then away support I remeber wasn't has high for anyone, and Stoke only used to have the 'little' section of the Smethwick End in the earlier 80s, but after '87 the larger sections(2,500+). After the 6-0 we waited until 2003 to win. Jeez!

Bloody good memory you've got there, Mark. I seem to have better memory for football back then, than a few years ago. I went to The Vic for a night game in '85 (Stoke were vitually down even that early). It was 0-0 with less than 7,000 there. Probably less than 1,000 Albion too.

That the one where all the coaches were queued up on the motorway and slip road and loads of Stokies were stood all lined up on the hard shoulder having a slash? Bloody great day out that was!
