Why do they hate each other? I think it started when we were promoted with them both in the late 70's. Seagulls vs Eagles

I think it comes from the 1970s when they were both in the second and first Divisions together. Palace were the nearest club to Brighton, and the other nearby club Pompey had much more serious issues going on with Southampton and Millwall to get to be worked up about the Sea Gulls. In those pretty violent days you had to feel sorry for Brighton, Spurs, West Ham amd Chelsea used to over run the place and dish out some pretty horrid behaviour to the locals. Palace was perhaps the only London Clubs the locals could stand up to and profess some sort of "hatred"
I also get the impression that the hatred is much more on the side of BHA support than Palace, as they have Millwall, and Charlton on their door step

Cheers! So it's a bit like the rivalries we've had with Cardiff and Hull then in recent years. But they're a helluva lot more bitter and entrenched about it. I've always wondered why, it always seemed so odd. The bit about Brighton changing their nickname is bemusing, daft buggers.

No traditional rivalry involved , it's just modern day manufactured rivalry

They class it as a local derby.........
It has to be the longest distance local derby in the football league, 44 miles to be exact.
it would be like Stoke verses Brum, close midlands rivals yes, local derby no!

Sometimes it can develop when two sides get a rivalry going. Leeds & Chelsea in the late 60s early 70s. Juventus and Fiorentina
