Was thinking yesterday about some of the old "rivals" we have had over the past twenty years and where they are in the current league structure. Admittedly some of you may never have considered these as rivals its simply my view, probably based on a lot of away days
Leicester and Forest ... possible Championship hopefulls, both fallen to the old third but now on the up. Derby....One disastrous premier league season now struggling Leeds.....Struggling in the championship but maybe good times to come Birmingham...A couple of Prem seasons but now in trouble
Coventry.....Oh how I used to envy them, so long in the top flight, now lolling about mid table in the third tier Shrewsbury... seems strange now to even consider Shrewsbury but I remember so many trips to Gay Meadow Walsall see "Shrewsbury" PNE.. always thought they were a very well run club and often so close to the Prem.
Then dropping to the fourth theres Gillingham, the mighty Vale and Bradford.
And unbelievably even teams in the Blue Square were our regular sparring partners, Luton, Grimsby Wrexham and the much hated Stockport County
Given different circumstance I could see us being in any of the positions these clubs now find themselves.
Just something to console yourselves with the next time a premier league game in front of 28000 doesn't quite come to scratch !!

That rivalry with Stockport was on a par with the West Brom and Vale games in the early 90's I thought.

im particularly enjoying Stockport disappear into the nether-regions of the football pyramid.
I wouldnt mind a few more Midlands clubs in the Premier League though, it is a shame not having Wolves or Birmingham for a decent derby.
West Brom are so easy to beat I hardly consider them rivals (more like generous siblings).
Aston Villa for some reason has never been on our radar as a derby like Brum or Wolves would be.
Who does that leave? not much around locally, or with much history to it.
On the plus side we should be the main highlights show on Central news & sport each week! And maybe it means we pick up more fans from nearby Shropshire and the rest of Staffordshire.
I just hope we never see Baadiff in the Premier League

I wouldn't perceive many of those to have been any kind of rivals of ours in all honesty though am not old enough to remember the bitter rivalry with Derby County.
Doubtless we have some trips to those horrible shitty little clubs that are mentioned and like so many, I guess it is only the plights of Stockport and Walsall that would make so many of us smile.
Stockport in particular hated us with such venom that it is wonderful to see them plying their trade outside of the football league.

How are the Baadiff fans these days anyway? Do they still have the hooligan element?
Im sure if they got promoted they would become the new "loudest fans in the Premiership" we seem to have limply given up. I reckon they would win plenty of neutral fans over, being a welsh club with fervent support blah blah blah.
What a sickening thought, Im praying they dont get promoted and go broke

I know a few Stockport fans from living in Buxton. Those 2 seasons 91 to 93 they truely despised us and Steino in particular..e.g Gannon's missus ;D ;D ;D

I will never forget how Grimsby "saved" us in 2003.
They drew to Brighton in their last game of the season, even though they already had been relegated. I know we beat Reading (who was on a play-off spot back then) the same day, so it didn't really make any difference. But if we had lost to them (which most of us probably were prepared for), and Grimsby had lost to Brighton - we would've been relegated and sent down to the third tier.
Grimsby beat us both times that year though (1-2, 2-0), but like I said, I will never forget what they did. I haven't got a single bad feeling towards Grimsby.

I did too. Whatever happened to Hudsongod? I believe Hudsongod transmuted into WaitingforWaddo who obviously then carried on his charming way of responding to people. So much so that eventually the inevitable happened and he pissed someone off so much they genuinely wanted to kick seven shades of shit out of him and off Waddo fucked like the lime green shirt-wearing keyboard warrior he was. Unless that was a different Hudsongod ;D ;D ;D

No chat about the game or whatever, just pure hatred.

I think in many cases the feeling was mutual towards them..I remember one saying that coming to the night game at the Vic in the promtion season was the most terrified he'd ever been. Spending all match dodging a constant stream of missiles, then having to run the gauntlet all the way to the station. Im sure I remember seeing a car overturned with a Stockport rosette in the back window too.
Gannon's wife tried to attack Steino in the tunnel at their place didnt she??
