Now he has got on the pitch is it too late for him to do the Wales thing? I would hate to see Ryan's international career amount to 15 minutes of infamy. I would hate to see his international career amount to a few qualifying games for Wales, would be a total waste of energy, how depressing must it be to be a Welsh international.

I got interested when Ryan was picked but then it's back to the usual shite of a manager picking players from the top named clubs...
Caulker and in-particular Cahill were fcuking woeful the other night and yet here we have yet another manager in Hodgson that doesn't see past the glamour clubs that they play for..
Ah well, back to laughing my tits off at this laughing stock and taking great pleasure on them under performing yet again, mind you it aint as if they're under performing because it's about the limit of their ability.
Heaven help us.....
T0553r5.
Edit - Hodgson should have given Ryan at least a whole half, instead that screw faced wwanker hung Ryan out to dry.

Depends how patriotic you are. Many many sports people see playing for their country as being the pinnacle of their career no matter whether its football for Wales or athletics for Kuwait. I thought many of the positives that came out of the Olympics was the athletes pride in representing their country. Sadly that seems to have passed you by. As for Ryan he clearly has no allegiance to Wales otherwise he would have chose them ahead of England. In a sporting world also frequented by sporting mercenaries like Kevin Pietersen. Lets hope Ryan doesn't make that choice.

I think if you asked any Welsh footballer the pinnacle for them would be getting Wales to a major tournament and not just the qualifying stages, which is what they are achieving presently.

Put like that it's kind of devil and the deep blue sea for Ryan right now. I suppose in reality nothing has changed post Sweden. He just needs to keep grinding out good performances in the Prem and hope something gives.

He's still very young for a centre half, I think he's got a good chance of getting into the squad on a regular basis in a few years' time. A change of management, a retirement/injury here or there and he can be back in. I certainly wouldn't advise him to sack it off and go and play for Wales just for the sake of getting some caps if his real ambition is to play for England.

I should probably have written that much differently, if I was in his position I would be trying my hardest to get into the England squad and actually having a chance to play in a tournament rather than settling for second best.

Fair enough mucka. Everyone at Stoke were clearly thrilled with his selection and I hope Woy, after his dalliance with 'ball playing CBs' when it will come back to bite him on the arse with poor defending costing games, he has his damascus moment and starts putting good organised defending ahead of fancy tippy tappy.

I think it was Denis Smith that I heard make a good point about Ryan Shawcross; he has very little experience as coming on as a sub - this is likely for many CB's.
Ryan Shawcross was not only making his International debut, but doing something else extremely foreign to him, coming into a game and trying to pick up the rhythm/movement/players.
To judge ANY centre half on a 20 minute sub appearance is ludicrous.

Hodgson will be gone before too long hopefully. Ryans time will come. Football trends, especially with England, come and go as the media and a succession of managers try to fathom why England always lose. At the moment they think we lose because we don't pass the ball like Spain. The resulting obsession with passing football means a cluster of centre-backs who don't even know how to defend (let alone do it) are the flavour of the month. When England stumble onto their next embarrassment on the global stage - probably a 5-1 World Cup hammering to a Belgium or Portugal - there will be a clamour to go back to basics and old-fashioned English defenders will be back in fashion. By that time Ryan will be in his late 20s and at his peak - and probably the only man for the job left! Have faith and be patient. Forget Ryan for England for the next few years, but his time will come.
