Yes he was one of few to stand up and give as good as he got against the twin terrors of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson.

He was mate i remember that 74-75 series well , only Greig , John Edrich and Alan Knott came out of it with their reputations intact Thomson was particularly fast and nasty in that series , some of the most hostile stuff I've seen

There was no speed gun to measure Thomson back then, but people reckoned he hit 100mph deliveries in that series on very quick and bouncy wickets.

To me he looked as quick as anything there has been ! Fast throat high deliveries from just short of a length , with that slinging action he got incredible bounce , Amiss, Fletcher, Denness and old Bumble just couldn't get near him

Didn't they bring Colin Cowdrey out of retirement to try and combat it, it didn't work.
I remember one delivery from Thomson that took off from just short of a length and went over wicketkeeper and slips who were jumping up in the air and landed like 3/4 of the way to boundary ropes.

They did fly Cowdrey out at the age of 42 ...it was ridiculous . Thomson suffered a shoulder injury and missed the last couple of tests as I remember ....he was never quite the same force after that injury, still fast but he seemed to lose that blistering pace and bounce

I went the cricket yesterday my mate was reminiscing and told me when Geoff Thompson used to fast bowl he'd start his run at the boundary. He did it here but I doubt he'd do it at the MCG!

Yes, course it was Bispham. I should know a bit more about it really - I got to know David Steele quite well a few years back when He was print manager for a company in Leicester who did some of our brochures. We went out for some grub a couple of times and I bored the arse off him with a barage of cricket questions. He was a great bloke - and a very canny cricketer. (Had some funny Alan Lamb stories too!)

Yes I have met David Steele myself mate and he is a nice bloke , he did really well in that series on our pitches ....I wouldnt have fancied his chances during the previous winter though on the pitches they played on ...not good for a front foot player like he was , I think Thomson may have taken his head off...and that's not to criticise him ,his technique wasnt suited to Australian pitches .he was a damned good player though , who could have played for England well before he did

At the ' Gabba ' in Brisbane you mean ? Dennis Lillee had a much longer run up than Thomson , at one point it was forty yards I think !
