Who do you reckon the top 5 signings have been by both managers? Doesn't have to be in order!
Pulis: Shawcross, Fuller, Lawrence, Etherington, Higginbotham.
Macari: Stein, Overson, Orlyggson, Russell, Foley
Not easy to narrow it down!

It's hard to pick just 5. You can't underestimate the impact of Mark Crossley, James Beattie and Rory Delap to be honest.

Me and my brother had a good long discussion about whether Crossley and Beattie should be in there. I went for Ethers over Beattie as he had the longevity and had a hand in a few of Beatties goals too.

Considering Pulis has spent near £100million it's frightening to think the combined total of his best signings are about £8Million.

I'd include Gleghorn and Sheron for Macari, although he also had a few howlers when it came to spending larger sums of money. McMahon for £400,000, McNally for about £150,000, Scott for £300,000 - all big sums of money for us in those days. Maybe Pickering too for £280,000 (not the worst signing ever but not really any better than Ian Clarkson who we released on a free)

As much as someone is prepared to pay for them, considering we don't need to sell I would imagine not many will come bidding, if anyone, it's a strange situation to be in. As for Etherington, he'd be off for a couple of Million in my opinion, did the square root of fuck all last season and he's getting on a bit isn't he.

In the current market we would surely be looking for bids of £15 million and upwards for the likes of Huth, Shawcross and Begovic? Agree regarding Etherington actually, his form has really dipped over the last couple of seasons!

In fairness though how much are the likes of Shawcross, Huth and Etherington worth now? We'd make a big profit on Shawcross, but not as big as some think, and Huth would probably go for a couple of million more than we paid. Ethers on the other hand is probably worth no more than we paid, probably less given his age and recent injury record.

Lou: Stein -£100,rotting in Oxfords reserves as their boss one Brian Horton didn't rate him as a striker. To be fair Stein was an excellent midfielder too. -Sheron (greatest swap deal in football history -Gleghorn -quality left sided midfielder & Lou moved him into the middle eventually which we though was daft.Wrong again weren't we -Overson, we didn't really need another CB but we did need a leader - Foley - scruffy player,no athlete. scored goals.
all for peanuts

I still say Crossley was a crucial signing. He was instrumental in keeping us up in 2003

Considering Pulis has spent near £100million it's frightening to think the combined total of his best signings are about £8Million. I don't think it's frightening, no. If he'd spent £100mill with a few £10-20mill signings thrown in there, perhaps. But the majority of Pulis signings are below the £4-5mill mark, with odd recent exceptions in the shape of Crouchy - who we may (hopefully) be adding to this list in a few years. It's not really a count of the best players, more those who have made the biggest impact. Crouch, Adam, Palacios, Huth and Tuncay would fetch a hefty combined total and are undoubtedly better players than Sorro, Akinbiyi, Crossley, Taggart and Liam - but the latter group is the more significant in terms of getting us to where we are.
