Can someone please tell me what is meant by this stupid phrase - there is nowt in any dictionary I've looked in, only that a marquee is a big tent!
What has it got to do with football transfers?

The clue is in the fact that a marquee is a BIG tent. So a Marquee signing is a BIG signing - in fact the biggest signing, the one that gets the headlines.

I was gonna say, a Marquee is one of those big flashing things on the front of a cinema or a theatre telling you what films/plays are on. So a 'Marquee signing' is sorta like 'name in lights signing'. High profile.
I actually quite like the phrase cos it suits certain contexts.

As Lakeland says, a marquee is a very large tent. A massive erection

. . . you can very often hear " marquee! " being shouted up and down Somerset playing fields at Sunday League level. I used to hear it alot when playing in defence.

Del Piero has signed for Sydney. That is a perfect example of a marquee signing
