I remember him arriving in 62/63 what a great player and gentleman, a brilliant tribute.

I knew a couple of lads who never set foot in the Vic. again after they sold Ritchie and they had been regular home and away fans. I myself have never felt so disappointed at the sale of a player. If something similar happened today this board would be in meltdown.

What a superb article John passed away on 23 February (my birthday - as did Sir Stan); it saddens me that each year I celebrate my birthday I think of the two of them - I had the great pleasure of watching them both in those wonderful, heady but traumatic days.

Great footballer & true Gent, before I came too Cyprus in 85, played golf with him, twice at Wolstanton.
