Hi all,
I am in the end process of starting a business with a family member which basically is catering for events, anyway - We will be making SCFC games priority selling Oatcakes as quite honestly its madness this is not done already. This most likely won't be live until December ish but hopefully one or two of you will be along to buy and no we won't be ripping people off before you say.
I want your opinions really. We have the option of either making them in front of you which would take around 5 minutes which we see as the best way but allot of time is taken both for us and you wanting to get to the game.... OR make the oatcakes at home and bring them to the pitch outside the ground where we can keep them warm (or slightly heat up if they need it)
Quality is the key here so your opinions on what YOU see as the best idea and what you would be happy to pay for them.
As above, not looking to rip people off here just simply make enough for a little extra cash and provide fellow stokies with a new option for match days!
Thank you. Jolly

Anything over a quid an oatcake is daylight robbery.

Make them at the ground gets my vote.
P.S isn't there a Van on the power league that sells Oatcakes?

Anything over a quid an oatcake is daylight robbery. For a standard cheese oatcake I agree. Add sausage etc then of course its more but that was what I was looking at for standard cheese oatcake. Thank you for your feedback!

We will be scouting the prices of these and how regular they come at the start of the new season. Either way we will make ourselves the same or cheaper than them.

Make them at the ground so people can see the process and how fresh they are, this is guaranteed to bring in the punters.
To make it run smoothly, do what a lot of takeaways do and get books of those numbered tickets and give one ticket to each customer so you know the order in which to serve people.

Oatcakes are quite simply one of the most vile foodstuffs known to man, perhaps second only to spinach. Consequently my response to your request for opinions is that oft-used phrase, I couldn't give a shit. Best of luck with your new business venture

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate all feedback. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to sell somewhere as simply as by the side of the road/near a stadium etc - So many regulations, health and safety and what not. Just be glad when everything is sorted.

I guess you would need to follow the Oatie Mostyns formula to succeed (re warm up with a fiilling cooked fresh). A reheated filling (using a microwave) doesnt work for me tbh. There is a guy who does them that way in the Gardeners which are OK but he has no other way of doing them. My thought is what about doing giant Oatcakes ? More filling (Chayze, bacon, sausage etc) then charge £2.50ish ? That way they are a dinner rather than a snack, you can do them quicker and you always need more than one ayway ! Just a thought - Good luck with your venture and I hope there are special offers for Oatcakers

Obviously it'd be better if you cooked them in front of us but if you're popular, which I'm sure you will be if you get a good spot, then it's just not realistic, is it? If it takes five minutes to serve every customer, no-one will ever bother queuing if there's more than one person in front of them!
To serve demand, you'll have to re-heat them. And I'd still buy one every week!

And I'd still buy one every week! Indeed. Though I'd suggest the most sensible approach is a compromise between the two. It's all about gauging demand, what time 'the rush' usually comes etc. I would imagine once jollypotter has been doing it for a few weeks he'll get an idea of how demand is working and will be able to get a process going whereby they have batches being prepared ready to serve people as they arrive. They won't exactly have been prepared right there and then for the customer but, if done right, will only have been sitting for a couple of minutes and won't require reheating.

Jolly Could you do both fresh for people who prepared to waite and made ones for people in a rush? This is the solution, if its a 5 minute wait for fresh then some will want to wait and even though most won't they will be all the happier for having a choice. Moan aversion is essential with Stokies I reckon.

Mix it up, fresh is best but not always ideal. As long as the fillings are cooked fresh then no one can grumble....

Careful what you charge, i do a 6 filling double belly buster for only £2.25 and they are huge, but i expect a pitch at the brit won't be cheap so your prices will be higher www.thebuttyboxstoke.co.uk/

Make them there and then I say. If you get a queue of people waiting for them, that will build up the interest and get people talking and help with custom. I know a great sandwich shop in London and sometimes the customers queue outside the door and round the block waiting for them, they are that good.

Great thanks for all this all. I know where your coming from with the cost of working on the Britannia site. Luckily I have looked into an area which is owned by the Council so with a bit of luck I can get authorisation from them but if not then a 100 yards from that is private land where I already have authorisation.
Like the look of the bellybuster btw and as the poster above says its going be trial and error to start off but I will have it perfected within a few games.
Regards and speak soon with developments!

I know somebody who used to do a catering van down there, believe me the rules and red tape were a nightmare, dig deep do some major research as you'll find some major *hidden* costs involved especially regards our lovely local council and their taxes never mind the health and safety, unless you are already in the trade, then i'll just shut the fuck up as you'll already know, don't want to teach you to suck eggs mate
