Did you know…
The first modern hospital was built in Baghdad over a thousand years ago? Persian scholars developed the foundations for modern algebra and algorithms? We get the word "camera" from the Arab word "qamara"? Inoculation was written about in 8th century India, long before it gained popularity in Europe? In the 10th century, a Persian surgeon invented many of the surgical tools we still use today? An engineer from Mesopotamia developed the camshaft along with other commonly used machines? By the year 644, Persians were using windmills to manage their water supply? A man in Cordoba took flight over a millennium before the Wright brothers were born? A 10th century Persian surgeon used catgut for internal stitches? A 13th century Arab doctor described the circulatory system 300 years before William Harvey

The Good Stuff in the Quran: A summary In yesterday's post, I compared the amount of good stuff in the Bible to that in the Quran and found that about 1% of the verses in each are (at least what I would call) good. But what are the good things in the Quran? Here's a summary.
Pay the poor due. 2:43, 83, 110, 277; 5:55; 7:156; 9:18, 71; 22:41, 78; 23:4; 24:37, 56; 31:4; 58:13; 73:20; 98:5
Help the poor and less fortunate. 2:83, 177, 215, 220; 4:2, 10, 36; 5:89; 17:26, 34; 22:28; 30:38, 51:19; 90:12-17; 93:9-10
Be kind to your parents and relatives. 2:83; 4:36; 6:151; 9:60; 16:90; 17:23, 26; 29:8; 30:38; 42:23; 46:15
Seek the truth. Don't lie. 2:42, 111, 113; 3:66; 6:152; 17:36; 20:114; 22:30; 53:28
Value justice. 4:135; 6:152; 22:41; 42:42
Treat women fairly. 3:195, 4:25; 9:71; 30:21
Free the slaves. 2:177; 5:89; 90:12-17
Be tolerant toward other religions. Don't force your religion on others. 2:256; 43:88-89; 109:1,6
Don't steal from orphans. 4:2, 10; 17:34
Do good. 2:195; 4:85
Seek peace. 4:114; 8:61
Don't lend money at unfair rates of interest. 3:130; 4:161
Treat everyone fairly. 3:195, 5:8
Don't kill innocent people. 4:29, 5:32
Be kind to one another. 49:11-12; 90:12-17
Fight evil by with good. 28:54; 41:34
Don't kill your children. 6:151; 17:31
Don't fight wars of aggression. 2:190
Don't hate people. 5:8
Forgive others. 7:199 (The total doesn't work out to the number on the Good Stuff list since some verses are listed more than once.)
Let me know if there are any that I've left out and I'll add them to this list and highlight them at the SAQ.

In fact, fuck John Lennon - I always imagine how much better the world would be without religions' utter bollocks. Religion = Hope for thick people. Just an opinion. Religion does my fucking head in. Wether its Christianity, Islam, Hindu or whatever, its all bullshit. My Auntie Rose (god bless her) was a true believer on God, she did charity work at convert hall in Stafford, and attended every Sunday, a very kind lady, she did not smoke or drink unlike others in the family and yet was struck down with cancer in 2007, 12 months later she was dead and buried in Stone Cemetry. The age of the Internet has changed peoples view on religion nowadays, but the old school like my mum and dad still find it comforting, even though they are 77 and 79. so i would say you are incorrect.

Mate it's all about individual choice, I honestly wish I could believe in something that strongly , but I can't , but if people take comfort in their gods good luck to them and carry on, but sadly religions of all beliefs seem to be responsible for all or most of the strife in the world and I think it's always been so

I clicked through and watched the video. For those who didn't it was a bunch of talking heads telling us what a good idea this exhibition was. A cross section of Stoke people with Mama at the top. Some looked like taxi drivers, some like businessmen and some like lads on the street corner. There was a few that didn't sound overly eloquent (including the narrator) and others that were educated and well spoken. There was a large-framed chap called Biggie or Bigs that was going to be on holiday in Jamaica so wouldn't be going to the exhibition. There was a light-skinned non-Muslim lady who had a lot of Muslim friends and kept a copy of the Quran at home. Unfortunately there were no Muslim ladies interviewed. It also didn't tell us what kind of things to expect at the exhibition, though maybe that's on the web page somewhere.
There you go. You don't need to watch it now.

I love those preachers they have in America and that feature on God TV and the like. They stand on a stage in front an auditorum full of yanks. I was watching one a while back who was an English bloke aged about 30. He was ranting and raving (and pissing of sweat!) about God and walking up to these Americans, putting his hand on their heads and shouting "the power of the lord is in you!" and all these yanks were fainting and dropping like flies! Mad as fuck!

there are a lot of bad people involved in good things, and manipulating the purpose of religion.
don't let nutters turn you against religious beliefs
i believe in God but, not the rammed down your throat stuff from a lot of them
for me the koran is, in the main, a book for doing good but, it is twisted and forced down your throats by many aggressive imams with hatred for any other religion
of course the same can be said with a lot of christian, catholic etc, but not so aggressively imo

I'm really interested in the exhibition because if you believe Stoke's got a future, this is a big part of it - the brightest and best and the snobs pissed off to live and work somewhere else, here are people who actually want to make a go of round here, why wouldn't you listen??

I'll be going-just as I will to Armed Forces day. Somebody is promoting what is good about their religion, not what is bad. In other words-look we are not all bad-not tar us with the same brush. Don't always believe what you read in the Sun or the Daily Mail-come and talk and see how much we have in common. Though I don't expect many on here to go.

The issue I have is when people profit out of the natural fear of the unknown i.e. what happens after death. Biggest example of this is the Harold Camping guy who claimed to have predicted the rapture early last year - his company, who did it through donations is worth around £70m! It's ridiculous. People who genuinely believed it had depression problems and phone lines were opened in america to deal with the aftermath because it didn't happen.
