Missed the anthem. Are we the only country left in the world who do not do the hand on heart shite that the Yanks introduced a while back? Saw the Ukrainians all,to a man, with hands over their hearts...I find it cringeworthy to be honest.

Swear Rooney got the words mixed up at the end. & their national anthem went on for ever The importance of a country can usually be judged by the length of its national anthem. Incredibly poor, tiny dictatorships tend to have 20 minute tacky symphonies.

It has been noticeable that the players have been coerced into participating in the anthem for this tournament. Whether you agree with the words or not, it doesn't give much of a statement of your team's unity and spirit if they can't be bothered to participate. Rooney and Gerrard must have been threatened with something horrible and bleak to make them do it.

From what I was lead to believe, Woy's first decision as manager was to tell all players to learn the anthem and to sing it during the start of every international match.

Its about showing togetherness and a do or die trying attitude towards playing for our country. good to see the footballers at least singing it.

It's like the players from Barca 'singing' (somehow with no words) the Spanish national anthem, except on a much smaller, insignificant victimising scale. DON'T BUY THE SUN!!!!!!!!!! I don't like Liverpool

I really don't care if a player chooses not to sing the National Anthem. I only expect two things. Not to put his hand on his heart during the anthem and Not to look like he doesn't care e.g. Chewing gum, jumping up and down, exercising neck muscles etc. If you are not going to sing then stand upright, look straight ahead and remain focussed for the 40 seconds that our National Anthem lasts. Not too much to ask really.

I don't like Liverpool I think that's more the Plastic Paddies who follow LFC, and to appease their gloryhunting support from Ireland. Rooney, an Evertonian, has an English flag tattooed on his arm. Plus Gerrard had never given less than 100% for England. In fact, a lot of the Scousers who played for LFC, like Fowler and McManaman, were Everton fans. Makes you think what the hell Everton's scouting network gets up to ???

It was good to see the whole team (kind of) singing.
But it is a shite anthem.
As much as I hate the French, their anthem is the bollocks. Always find myself humming along before stopping myself mid-hum and muttering "Bloody French".

I love the American anthem and often sing along to it whenever they compete in anything.
I just love it so much I can't describe it.

God Save the King was written to celebrate the French King Louis XIV's recovery from hemorrhoids.
Jerusalem was written by the mad poet William Blake who was a member if a cult who believed that the Messiah once took an holiday in England. It later became the anthem of the British communist party
I would like to see the England players singing Monty Python's Ya-De-Buckety song. It makes more sense.
