This hasn't been mentioned!
2001: A Space Odyssey
Saw this at the Gaumont in Hanley and the scene in the clip, on the huge screen, was spine-tingling - I can still remember it so clearly - it made you feel as though you were up there in space with them and drifting through the stars. The magnificent Blue Danube music was an inspired choice and added hugely to the magcal effect.

It's no coincidence that most of my fav movies are scifi;Alien, The Thing, Terminator, Escape From New York, Blade Runner, Mad Max 2 and of course the Star Wars saga. I like Star Trek but I'm not fanatical about it like I am Star Wars. This might for me be the greatest scene in movie history

I also watched Prometheus again recently and once you take it as its own movie and not just as an Alien prequel, it's excellent. It's just a shame Alien Covenant derailed the franchise. I think despite the impressive visuals it's really devoid of the wonder of Prometheus or the terror of Alien. It looks like the third movie may well never happen and we won't get clarity on the exact events that lead to the 1979 movie, other than a look at the engineers and confirmation that the Alien itself was a biological weapon.

I haven't seen any good sci-fi films, apart from possibly Fahrenheit 451 and Frankenstein.
Open for suggestions. 😀

And how good do these special effects still look? An amazing movie even 60 years later

Arrival. One of the best sci fi films of the last 20 years. Unreal viewing.

Yes, Arrival is excellent. You might enjoy this, yes it's low budget but its a decent effort with a good Tangerine Dream score. It's good, intelligent stuff not reliant on big sfx. Not sure if it ever got a proper dvd or br release.

I've just binge-watched the Alien Quadrilogy, felt I needed to after the disgrace that was Covenant. I've seen Alien countless times but this time, I watched it alone and in the dark. It's a completely different experience 😯

It's a completely different experience 😯 it's magnificent. I was too young to see it at the cinema back in 1979 but I was lucky enough to catch a theatrical re-release along with The Thing. Both movies incredibly good on a big screen even after dozens of previous viewings on video. I like Aliens but I agree with Ridley Scott that it's an ill fitting sequel in that it's glorified bug hunt diminishes the Demonic threat of the Xenomorph. . Saying that, RS has so blotted his cv with Covenant and it looks like we'll never get that resolution. Prometheus wasn't perfect but at least it had ambition. Have you ever seen these scenes?

I havent seen Resurrection for many years, always thought it was poor, possibly the worst, how did you find it on your binge??

This is a scene that still moves me incredibly, it's almost transcendtal
It moves me to tears everytime. My late mother loved this scene and every time I watch it I can feel her presence. I would love it to happen in my lifetime. Maybe it has and the governments are concealing it Can you imagine them landing and being greeted by Trump?! "we'll come back in another 1000 years when you've grown up a bit more" 😁

I prefer it to 3, the best thing about 3 is seeing how many British actors I can spot 😁

I love the second one when the alien knocks Parker out and then sees if he's okay 😂 I've just seen the Director's Cut which shows Brett and Dallas being broken down into eggs, that's a creepy scene. EDIT: so the tentacle round the leg was originally Brett and not Lambert!

Think Hellraiser and a sprinkling of 80s John Carpenter and Stuart Gordon. Got a definite Lovecraftian vibe. And proper 'bladder effects', no CGI in sight.
