Post by slother on Jun 11, 2012 20:17:01 GMT
Haha for example the phrase "Would <journeyman footballer> do a job at left back?"
Will everyone stop saying it?
Thank you, you can now continue to go about your business ;D

Do a job, as in
Huth can do a job at right back Huth can do a job at left back Shotton can do a job at right back Woodgate can do a job at right back Wilson can do a job at left back Shotton can do a job at right wing Rory can do a job at right wing Rory can do a job at left wing
Basically it's lazy arsed managers speak for square pegs in round holes.

Can we hand a painting of a Spitfire and wish it a happy retirement? Drives me crackers. Please explain the reference to a Spitfire mate as you have lost me with that one

Good heavens, it's a joke about giving the phrase a gift because it is "retiring". It's not rocket science, or military aviation for that matter (see what I did there? Actually you probably won't. ;D ) A gold watch would have been a more pedestrian reference but I liked the elegance of the Spitfire painting.

The phrase do a job is nearly as annoying as "playing the right way"

The phrase do a job is nearly as annoying as "playing the right way" Indeed, but not as annoying as 'he puts a shift in'

Or 'up top'. It's 'up front'. Up top is where teenage boys dream of putting their hands! This. As soon as Andy Gray started saying it, it was being parroted in pubs everywhere as if by saying it you instantly gain some form of credibility.
